Book excerpt: Most people think of weakness as purely negative, but true Christianity embraces weakness as a way of life. In this collection of meditations on 2 Corinthians, renowned Bible scholar and theologian J. I. Packer reflects on the central importance of weakness for the Christian life. He exhorts readers to look to Christ for strength, affirmation, and contentment in the midst of their own sin and frailty. Now in his mid-eighties, Packer mediates on the truths of Scripture with pastoral warmth and exegetical care, drawing on lessons learned from the experience of growing older and coming face-to-face with his own mortality. Overflowing with wisdom gleaned from a life of obedience to Christ and dependence on his Word, this encouraging book ultimately directs readers to the God who promises to be ever-present and all-sufficient.

The editors and con tributors are grateful for the forum that has given us the opportunity to discuss these topics over the last 10 years. We are most grateful to our contributors both for their chapters and for the intellectual stimulation they have given us. Jos Meloen in particular has been free with his time, advice, and enthusiasm. Although he declined to contribute a chapter, Bob Altemeyer has been a source of encouragement and a ready adviser on any question we have asked. The staff of Springer-Verlag has been most patient in adapting to our schedule. We are indebted to the secretarial staff at the University of Maine, and especially to Kathy McAuliffe, who has put in many extra hours above and beyond the call of duty. Finally, we dedicate this book to our departed friend and colleague, Silvan Tomkins, with whom we conversed at length about these and other topics, and from whom we received inspiration and diversion. Book From Weakness to Strength

Download or read book From Weakness to Strength written by Scott Sauls and published by David C Cook. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this honest book, pastor and author Scott Sauls exposes the real struggles that Christian leaders and pastors regularly face. Sauls shares his own stories and those of other leaders from Scripture and throughout history to remind us that we are human, we are sinners, and we need Jesus to help us thrive as people and leaders. For Christian leaders—both inside and outside of the church—weaknesses that are left unchecked can lead to a downfall that is both public and painful. They want to lead with character and live like Jesus, but ambition, isolation, criticism, envy, anticlimax, opposition, restlessness, and insecurity can get in the way. From Weakness to Strength provides leaders with tools to draw near to Jesus and stay encouraged and hopeful, even (and especially) when sin and struggle get in the way.

Book Strength and Weakness at the Interface

Download or read book Strength and Weakness at the Interface written by Jonathan Barnes and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thorough study of the expression of contrast in the world's vowel systems examines phonetic and phonological differences between so-called strong and weak positions, bringing the full range of data from positional neutralization systems to bear on central questions at the interface between phonetics and phonology. The author draws evidence from a diverse array of sources, bringing together cross-linguistic typological surveys, detailed investigations of the diachrony of specific languages (Slavic, Turkic, Uralic, Austronesian, among many others) and original studies in experimental phonetics. Devoted at once to empirical coverage and to theoretical investigation, this is the first work to compile so exhaustive a study of positional neutralization patterns in the languages of the world. On the basis of this catalog of evidence, the author argues for a diachronically oriented approach to the phonetic motivations behind phonological patterns, with phonologization as its central mechanism. Three pairs of traditionally-identified strong and weak positions for the realization of vowel contrasts are selected and examined in detail: stressed and unstressed syllables, domain final and non-final syllables, and domain initial and non-initial syllables. Neutralization patterns in each position are extracted from survey data, and analyzed in light of the phonetic characteristics of each pair of positions. Both the nature of the patterns identified as well as the variety and sources of exceptions have important consequences for formal phonology, phonetics, and historical linguistics as well.

You'll explore topics such as: Misconceptions about heaven What the new heavens and new earth will be like What happens when you die What life in heaven will be like How to prepare for your future in heaven Many Christians view this life as their only chance to fulfill their ambitions, to be "all they can be." Book Strength Through Weakness

Download or read book Strength Through Weakness written by Greg Becker and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of his adult life, Greg Becker persevered through multiple health issues resulting in friends often telling him that he should write a book. In November, 2012, he formed the outline that would become his autobiography. Greg's nightly at-home dialysis treatments made sleep difficult, so he soon became consumed with typing his memoir throughout the nights on his iPad. His book was finished in a mere six weeks. Less than a month later, on the evening of his 56th birthday, he asked his wife to take him to the emergency room, a trip they had made many times before. Shortly after midnight, Greg went into cardiac arrest and was gone a few hours later. God's providence was evident in the writing of Greg's book just as it was throughout his entire life. This book is the culmination of a lifetime of events that Greg prayed would be used to glorify God and encourage the reader.

While researchers around the globe explore the causes of treatments for CFIDS, the men, women and children who suffer with the illness grapple with questions like: -Will I ever be normal again? -Of what value am I now that I can't work or go to school anymore? -How will CFIDS affect my marriage and my family? How will CFIDS affect my ability even to consider marriage or having children? -How do I glorify God in the midst of a debilitating illness and pain? Lynn Vanderzalm and her teenage daughter, Alisa, have battled CFIDS for over seven years. In Finding Strength in Weakness, Vanderzalm shares her family's struggles and questions-along with those of 70 other men, women, and children-while offering direction, encouragement, and hope to the countless families who battle with the 'mystery illness of the nineties.'

Book When Weakness Becomes Strength

Download or read book When Weakness Becomes Strength written by Laura Russell Simpson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in my infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christs sake: for when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:910 It is through many years of personal experiences, struggles, and sufferings that God has brought forth this collection of writings. These are His words, not mine. Our sufferings are never wasted. Our weaknesses do become our strengths through His help. My prayer is that His words will encourage you, that He will reveal to you the times of weakness that made you strong, that you will see His presence with you as He carries you from your weaknesses to strength. May you experience His faithfulness to His words in 2 Corinthians 12:910.
