Book Restricted Orientation Convexity

Download or read book Restricted Orientation Convexity written by Eugene Fink and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restricted-orientation convexity is the study of geometric objects whose intersections with lines from some fixed set are connected. This notion generalizes standard convexity and several types of nontraditional convexity. The authors explore the properties of this generalized convexity in multidimensional Euclidean space, and describ restricted-orientation analogs of lines, hyperplanes, flats, halfspaces, and identify major properties of standard convex sets that also hold for restricted-orientation convexity. They then introduce the notion of strong restricted-orientation convexity, which is an alternative generalization of convexity, and show that its properties are also similar to that of standard convexity.

Book Strong Restricted orientation Convexity

Download or read book Strong Restricted orientation Convexity written by Eugene Fink and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Strong O-convexity is a generalization of standard convexity, defined with respect to a fixed set O of hyperplanar orientations. We explore the properties of strongly O-convex sets in two and more dimensions and develop a mathematical foundation of strong convexity. We characterize strongly O-convex polytopes, flats, and halfspaces, establish the strong O-convexity of the affine hull of a strongly O-convex set, and describe conditions under which two orientation sets yield the same collection of strongly O-convex sets (orientation equivalence). We identify some of the major properties of standard convex sets that hold for strong O-convexity. In particular, we establish the following results: The intersection of a collection of strongly O-convex sets is strongly O-convex. For every point in the boundary of a strongly O-convex set, there is a supporting strongly O-convex hyperplane through it. A closed set with a nonempty interior is strongly O-convex if and only if it is the intersection of the strongly O-convex halfspaces that contain it."

Book Restricted oriented Convex Sets

Download or read book Restricted oriented Convex Sets written by Gregory J. E. Rawlins and published by University of Waterloo, Department of Computer Science. This book was released on 1989 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "A restricted-oriented convex set is a set of points whose intersection with any line, in a given set of orientations, is either empty or connected. This notion generalizes both orthogonal convexity and normal convexity. The aim of this paper is to establish a mathematical foundation for the theory of restricted-oriented convex sets. To this end, we prove the restricted-oriented analogs of some basic properties of convex sets and also present a decomposition theorem for them."

Book EVOLVE A Bridge between Probability Set Oriented Numerics and Evolutionary Computation V

Download or read book EVOLVE A Bridge between Probability Set Oriented Numerics and Evolutionary Computation V written by Alexandru-Adrian Tantar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-04 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume encloses research articles that were presented at the EVOLVE 2014 International Conference in Beijing, China, July 1–4, 2014. The book gathers contributions that emerged from the conference tracks, ranging from probability to set oriented numerics and evolutionary computation; all complemented by the bridging purpose of the conference, e.g. Complex Networks and Landscape Analysis, or by the more application oriented perspective. The novelty of the volume, when considering the EVOLVE series, comes from targeting also the practitioner’s view. This is supported by the Machine Learning Applied to Networks and Practical Aspects of Evolutionary Algorithms tracks, providing surveys on new application areas, as in the networking area and useful insights in the development of evolutionary techniques, from a practitioner’s perspective. Complementary to these directions, the conference tracks supporting the volume, follow on the individual advancements of the subareas constituting the scope of the conference, through the Computational Game Theory, Local Search and Optimization, Genetic Programming, Evolutionary Multi-objective optimization tracks.

Book Advances in Applied Mechanics

Download or read book Advances in Applied Mechanics written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2009-06-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major developments in the fields of fluid and solid mechanics are scattered throughout an array of technical journals, often making it difficult to find what the real advances are, especially for a researcher new to the field or an individual interested in discovering the state-of-the-art in connection with applications. The Advances in Applied Mechanics book series draws together recent significant advances in various topics in applied mechanics. Published since 1948, Advances in Applied Mechanics aims to provide authoritative review articles on topics in the mechanical sciences, primarily of interest to scientists and engineers working in the various branches of mechanics, but also of interest to the many who use the results of investigations in mechanics in various application areas such as aerospace, chemical, civil, environmental, mechanical and nuclear engineering. Advances in Applied Mechanics continues to be a publication of high visibility and impact. Review articles are provided by active, leading scientists in the field by invitation of the editors. Many of the articles published have become classics within their fields. Volume 42 in the series contains articles on coarse-graining in elasto-viscoplasticity, elasticity at nano-scale, and elestic and conductive properties of heterogeneous materials. Covers all fields of the mechanical sciences Highlights classical and modern areas of mechanics that are ready for review Provides comprehensive coverage of the field in question

Book The Measurement of Productive Efficiency

Download or read book The Measurement of Productive Efficiency written by Harold O. Fried and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-04-22 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work focuses on measuring and explaining producer performance. The authors view performance as a function of the state of technology and economic efficiency, with the former defining a frontier relation between inputs and outputs; the former incorporating waste and misallocation relative to this frontier. They show that insights can be gained by allowing for the possibility of a divergence between the economic objective and actual performance, and by associating this inefficiency with causal variables subject to managerial or policy influence. Derived from a series of lectures held on techniques and applications of the three approaches to the construction of production frontiers and measure of efficiency, this work will be an essential reference to scholars of a variety of disciplines who are involved with quantitative methods or policy.

Book Convexity and Its Applications

Download or read book Convexity and Its Applications written by GRUBER and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of surveys consists in part of extensions of papers presented at the conferences on convexity at the Technische Universitat Wien (July 1981) and at the Universitat Siegen (July 1982) and in part of articles written at the invitation of the editors. This volume together with the earlier volume «Contributions to Geometry» edited by Tolke and Wills and published by Birkhauser in 1979 should give a fairly good account of many of the more important facets of convexity and its applications. Besides being an up to date reference work this volume can be used as an advanced treatise on convexity and related fields. We sincerely hope that it will inspire future research. Fenchel, in his paper, gives an historical account of convexity showing many important but not so well known facets. The articles of Papini and Phelps relate convexity to problems of functional analysis on nearest points, nonexpansive maps and the extremal structure of convex sets. A bridge to mathematical physics in the sense of Polya and Szego is provided by the survey of Bandle on isoperimetric inequalities, and Bachem's paper illustrates the importance of convexity for optimization. The contribution of Coxeter deals with a classical topic in geometry, the lines on the cubic surface whereas Leichtweiss shows the close connections between convexity and differential geometry. The exhaustive survey of Chalk on point lattices is related to algebraic number theory. A topic important for applications in biology, geology etc.

Book The Measurement of Productive Efficiency and Productivity Growth

Download or read book The Measurement of Productive Efficiency and Productivity Growth written by Harold O. Fried and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-04 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Harold Fried, et al. published The Measurement of Productive Efficiency: Techniques and Applications with OUP in 1993, the book received a great deal of professional interest for its accessible treatment of the rapidly growing field of efficiency and productivity analysis. The first several chapters, providing the background, motivation, and theoretical foundations for this topic, were the most widely recognized. In this tight, direct update, these same editors have compiled over ten years of the most recent research in this changing field, and expanded on those seminal chapters. The book will guide readers from the basic models to the latest, cutting-edge extensions, and will be reinforced by references to classic and current theoretical and applied research. It is intended for professors and graduate students in a variety of fields, ranging from economics to agricultural economics, business administration, management science, and public administration. It should also appeal to public servants and policy makers engaged in business performance analysis or regulation.
