Abstract: I present spectroscopic imaging of the high-velocity system (HVS) towards the central cD galaxy (NGC 1275) in the Perseus Cluster at a high spectral resolution for the first time. Previous observation suggests that the HVS is a highly inclined dusty and gas-rich galaxy moving towards the center of NGC 1275 at a high speed of 3000 km/s relative to the systemic velocity of NGC 1275 through the hot intracluster medium (ICM). If this is the case, then the HVS should be undergoing intense ram-pressure stripping. However, there is tentative evidence for ram-pressure stripping in the HVS, and furthermore confined to a small region of the galaxy. Previous observations also point out that at the location where the HVS is seen, there are many star clusters seen towards the inner region of NGC 1275. The separation of young star clusters between those belong to NGC 1275 and those belong to the HVS is, however, not clearly defined. The primary scientific objectives are to (i) search for evidence for ram-pressure stripping in the HVS, as well as signs of tidal interactions between the HVS and NGC 1275; and (ii) separate the numerous young star clusters seen towards the entire NGC 1275 into those associated with the HVS and those associated with NGC 1275. NGC 1275 and the HVS were observed simultaneously with the use of Potsdam Multi-Aperture Spectrophotometer. The main emission lines being studied are the Hα & [NII]λ6548,6483 lines in NGC 1275 and the HVS. I present maps of intensity distribution, velocity field and velocity dispersion of the Hαemission of the HVS, as well as the line ratio of the [NII] doublets lines to the Hα line in the HVS. I find that the line ratio of [NII]/Hα is less than 0.1 throughout the entire body of the HVS, indicating metallicity is low in the HVS. I also find that the metallicity is decreasing with distance from the center, just like other normal spiral galaxies. I demonstrate that a large fraction of the young star clusters seen towards the inner regions of NGC 1275 are closely associated with bright Hα-emitting regions in the HVS, and trace the overall Hα-emitting body of the HVS, suggesting that some young star clusters are associated to the HVS. I find that there are two distributions of young star clusters in color-color space, providing a way to separate out the star clusters likely belong to the HVS. I present evidence that the HVS is experiencing intense ram-pressure stripping and also evidence suggesting that the HVS is possibly tidally interacting with NGC 1275. The results demonstrate that the HVS is a dusty, gas-rich, low-metallicity galaxy that has been disrupted by ram-pressure stripping and possibly also tidal interactions. I show that the HVS exhibit widespread and vigorous ( 3.6 MM_⊙ yr DEGREES(-1)) star formation over the last at least 0.1 Gyr. The vigorous SFR of the HVS is in contrast to what suggested by the observed low metallicity (suggestive of relatively weak star-formation activity over the recent history). The SFR of the HVS is likely to be triggered by the same process that produces global distortion on the HVS, here ram pressure stripping and possibly tidal interaction are in consideration. This information, along with spectroscopic data from the WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-clusters Survey (i.e. WINGS), were used to investigate whether ram pressure is a mechanism that influences star formation. Galaxies exhibiting ongoing star formation are identified by the presence of strong Balmer lines (Hβ), known to correspond to early type stars. Older galaxies where a rapid increase in star formation has recently ceased, known as E+A galaxies, are identified by strong Hβ absorption coupled with little to no [OII] emission. The correlation between recent star formation and "high" ram pressure, as defined by Kapferer et al. (2009) as ≥ 5 x 10-11 dyn cm-2, was tested and lead to a contradiction of the previously held belief that ram pressure influences star formation on the global cluster scale.

These galaxies have complex evolutionary histories, with some having supermassive black holes at their core, others are powerful radio sources, a very few are relatively nearby and even visible to the naked eye, whereas the light from one recent discovery has been travelling for the past 13.4 billion years to show us its infancy, and from a time when the Universe was in its infancy. And in spite of the vastness of the Universe, some galaxies are colliding with others, embraced in a graceful gravitational dance. Indeed, as the Andromeda Galaxy is heading towards us, a similar fate awaits our Milky Way. When looking at a modern image of a galaxy, one is in awe at the shear wondrous nature of such a magnificent creation, with its boundless secrets that it is keeping from us, its endless possibilities for harboring alien civilizations, and we remain left with the ultimate knowledge that we are connected to its glory.

Book excerpt: The relative importance of physical processes occurring on the various scales within molecular clouds is strongly debated, partly due to the lack of systematic cloud-wide observations available until recently. My thesis characterizes the kinematics of star formation across the entire Perseus molecular cloud as well as in a suite of simulations, providing statistical measures that successful theories of star formation will have to explain. My thesis consists of three interconnected projects described below. Dense core survey: The kinematics of the dense cores in Perseus were measured through single pointing observations of the N2H+(10) and C18O(21) transitions, tracing the dense core gas and surrounding lower density gas respectively. The internal velocity dispersion of the dense cores was observed to be small dominated by thermal motions, and roughly the size expected for the cores to be in virial equilibrium. The dense cores also have little motion with respect to the surrounding low density gas usually much less than the ambient sound speed of the medium. Comparison to cloud survey: The dense core observations were compared to a full spectral cube of 13CO(10) emission from the COMPLETE Survey, tracing the lower-density cloud material. From this analysis, it was determined that the dense cores have little motion with respect to the larger structures that they inhabit smaller than the typical velocity dispersion or the estimated virial velocity dispersion of the region. Analysis of simulations: A suite of thin-sheet MHD simulations with varying levels of input magnetic field strengths and turbulence were analyzed in a manner to mimic the above observational surveys. While the small internal velocity dispersion of the dense cores could be reproduced by most of the simulations, the small motion between the core and its surrounding lower density gas could not be produced at the same time as the observed large-scale non-thermal motions. Using the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and Very Large Array (VLA) radio interferometers, the author has discovered a common picture of hierarchical fragmentation that challenges some of the leading theoretical models and suggests a new, observation-driven understanding of how massive star formation in clustered environments may begin: it is initiated by the hierarchical fragmentation of a dense filament from 10 pc down to 0.01 pc, and the stellar mass buildup is simultaneously fed by hierarchical accretion at similar scales. The new scenario points out the importance of turbulence and filamentary structure, which are now receiving increasing attention and further tests from both observers and theorists.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents new Herschel observations at 70 micron, 160 micron, 250 micron, 350 micron, and 500 micron of the Perseus molecular cloud from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey. The Perseus molecular cloud is a nearby star-forming region consisting of seven main star-forming clumps. The Herschel observations are used to characterize and contrast the properties of these clumps, and to study their embedded core populations. First, we probed the exceptionally young clump, B1-E. Using complementary molecular line data, we demonstrate that B1-E is likely fragmenting into a first generation of dense cores in relative isolation. Such a core formation region has never been observed before. Second, we use complementary long wavelength observations at 850 micron to study the dust properties in the larger, more active B1 clump. We find that Herschel data alone cannot constrain well the dust properties of cold dust emission and that long wavelength observations are needed. Additionally, we find evidence of dust grain growth towards the dense cores in B1, where the dust emissivity index, beta, varies from the often assumed value of beta = 2. In the absence of long wavelength observations, however, assuming beta = 2 is preferable over measuring beta with the Herschel-only bands. Finally, we use the source extraction code, getsources, to identify the core populations within each clump from the Herschel data. In addition, we use complementary archival infrared observations to study their populations of young stellar objects (YSOs). We find that the more massive clumps have an excess of older stage YSOs, suggesting that these regions contracted first. Starless cores are typically associated with peaks in the column density, where those found towards regions of higher column density also have higher average densities and colder temperatures. Starless cores associated with a strong, local interstellar radiation field, however, have higher temperatures. We find that the clumps with the most prominent high column density tails also had the highest fractions of early-stage YSOs. This relation suggests that the quantity of high column density material corresponds to recent star formation activity.
