This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book Building Safe and Strong Families Earlier Intervention and Family Support Strategy

Download or read book Building Safe and Strong Families Earlier Intervention and Family Support Strategy written by Western Australia. Department for Child Protection and Family Support and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Building a Safe and Strong Families' is Western Australia's strategy to enable the service system to be more responsive and effective for the most vulnerable families in our community. It recognises that earlier and more intensive engagement and intervention - before problems become entrenched - provides the best opportunity to effectively support and benefit individuals and families. This document sets out the principles of the strategy and describes its development. There are four focus areas: Delivering shared outcomes with collective effort; A culturally competent service system; Diverting families from the child protection system; and Preventing children entering out-of home care. The strategy follows on from the 'Building a Better Future: Out-of-Home Care Reform in Western Australia' plan released earlier in the year.

Book Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Policies

Download or read book Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Policies written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-10-31 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Childhood obesity is a serious health problem that has adverse and long-lasting consequences for individuals, families, and communities. The magnitude of the problem has increased dramatically during the last three decades and, despite some indications of a plateau in this growth, the numbers remain stubbornly high. Efforts to prevent childhood obesity to date have focused largely on school-aged children, with relatively little attention to children under age 5. However, there is a growing awareness that efforts to prevent childhood obesity must begin before children ever enter the school system. Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Policies reviews factors related to overweight and obese children from birth to age 5, with a focus on nutrition, physical activity, and sedentary behavior, and recommends policies that can alter children's environments to promote the maintenance of healthy weight. Because the first years of life are important to health and well-being throughout the life span, preventing obesity in infants and young children can contribute to reversing the epidemic of obesity in children and adults. The book recommends that health care providers make parents aware of their child's excess weight early. It also suggests that parents and child care providers keep children active throughout the day, provide them with healthy diets, limit screen time, and ensure children get adequate sleep. In addition to providing comprehensive solutions to tackle the problem of obesity in infants and young children, Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Policies identifies potential actions that could be taken to implement those recommendations. The recommendations can inform the decisions of state and local child care regulators, child care providers, health care providers, directors of federal and local child care and nutrition programs, and government officials at all levels.

Book The Stronger Families in Australia SFIA Study

Download or read book The Stronger Families in Australia SFIA Study written by Ben Edwards and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report presents the results of Phase 2 of the Stronger Families in Australia (SFIA) study, an evaluation of the Communities for Children (CfC) initiative. The focus is on examining the effects of the initiative on child, family and community outcomes. By using data from Phase 1 (Waves 1 to 3 conducted from 2006–08) and Phase 2 (Waves 4 and 5 conducted in 2010–12) of the Stronger Families in Australia (SFIA) study, the medium- to longer-term effects of the program can be assessed. As part of the CfC initiative, the Department of Social Services (DSS; formerly Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs [FaHCSIA]) funded non-government organisations as “Facilitating Partners” initially in 45 disadvantaged geographic areas around Australia. Their task was to develop and implement a “whole-of-community” approach to enhancing early childhood development, through consultation with local stakeholders. The idea behind the CfC model is that service effectiveness is dependent not only on the nature and number of services, but also on coordinated service delivery "--Executive summary.

This positive and encouraging story explains and reinforces the importance of “Family Rules” for children’s safety. Information to help determine YOUR family rules as well as organizations that can help are included in this book. “When do children have the skills and maturity to be safely left home alone? This is a difficult decision for all parents, yet developing family rules provides children with guidance to make good choices. When successful, the experience can boost a child’s confidence as well as promote independence and responsibility. This story provides a great way for parents and children to talk about and prepare for this developmental milestone.” Lisa Specter-Dunaway, CEO, Families Forward Virginia Virginia Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America www.familiesforwardva.org “Keeping Me Safe at Home is a fantastic resource for both parents and professionals to help guide conversations in a child friendly manner as families decide if a child is ready to be left home alone. This engaging story teaches children important safety lessons while empowering them to be more responsible and better prepared to stay home alone. Cindy Chambers, once again, captures the hearts and minds of her young audience, while seamlessly weaving in lessons on safety and well-being. This thought provoking story will help readers answer the question “Is my child ready to be left home alone?” Dave Cleary Founder, SCAN of Northern Virginia “I love how Keeping Me Safe at Home takes such an important topic and breaks it down so that people will have an opportunity to talk to children about making good choices. I also like that it provides readers the occasion to see that social workers are kind and that our main goal is to keep children safe!” Randi Knights, Director Manassas Park Department of Social Services “Keeping Me Safe at Home is a wonderful book about keeping children safe when they are home alone. It takes me back in time to when my family made decisions about when and how it was appropriate to leave our daughters alone. The book does an outstanding job of explaining the importance of rules and guidelines that should be in place. It is an excellent addition to The Protect Me Book Series.” Jeanette Rishell, Mayor City of Manassas Park

Download or read book Vibrant and Healthy Kids written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-12-27 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are the foundation of the United States, and supporting them is a key component of building a successful future. However, millions of children face health inequities that compromise their development, well-being, and long-term outcomes, despite substantial scientific evidence about how those adversities contribute to poor health. Advancements in neurobiological and socio-behavioral science show that critical biological systems develop in the prenatal through early childhood periods, and neurobiological development is extremely responsive to environmental influences during these stages. Consequently, social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors significantly affect a child's health ecosystem and ability to thrive throughout adulthood. Vibrant and Healthy Kids: Aligning Science, Practice, and Policy to Advance Health Equity builds upon and updates research from Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity (2017) and From Neurons to Neighborhoods: The Science of Early Childhood Development (2000). This report provides a brief overview of stressors that affect childhood development and health, a framework for applying current brain and development science to the real world, a roadmap for implementing tailored interventions, and recommendations about improving systems to better align with our understanding of the significant impact of health equity.
