Book excerpt: When populations of striped bass began plummeting in the early 1980s, author and fisherman Dick Russell was there to lead an Atlantic coast conservation campaign that resulted in one of the most remarkable wildlife comebacks in the history of fisheries. As any avid fisherman will tell you, the striped bass has long been a favorite at the American dinner table; in fact, we've been feasting on the fish from the time of the Pilgrims. By 1980 that feasting had turned to overfishing by commercial fishing interests. Striper Wars is Dick Russell's inspiring account of the people and events responsible for the successful preservation of one of America's favorite fish and of what has happened since. Striper Wars is a tale replete with heroes--and some villains--as the struggle to save the striper migrated down the coast from Massachusetts to Maryland. Russell introduces us to a postman at arms against a burly trap-net fisherman, a renowned state governor caving to special interests, and a fishing-tackle maker fighting alongside marine biologists. And he describes how champions of this singular fish blocked power plants and New York's Westway Project that would otherwise compromise its habitat. Unfortunately, those who cheered the triumphant ending to the campaign, as the coastal states enacted measures that enabled the striped bass to make its comeback, have found the peace transitory--there is now a new enemy emerging on the front. In recent years a chronic bacterial disease has struck more than seventy percent of the striped bass population in the primary spawning waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Malnutrition seems to be a significant factor, brought on by the same overfishing that plagued the bass in the first battle--only this time, the overfishing is devastating menhaden, the silvery little fish upon which the bass feed. Lessons learned during the first conservation battle are being applied here, highlighting a need for a whole new ecosystem-based approach to conserving species. Only with constant vigilance by concerned citizens, Dick Russell reminds us, can environmental victories be sustained. This particular fish story is a personal one for him, and he follows the striper's saga today all the way to California, where the fish was introduced in 1879 and where agribusiness now threatens its future. For his conservation work during the 1980s Russell received a citizen's Chevron Conservation Award.

Book The Fated Chronicles Complete Series Fantasy Adventure Bundle

Download or read book The Fated Chronicles Complete Series Fantasy Adventure Bundle written by Humphrey Quinn and published by Rachel Humphrey - D'aigle. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 1700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fated Chronicles: A Contemporary Portal Fantasy Adventure... The Fated Chronicles was my first series. And even though it's full of magical adventure, it's also about feeling lost and finding your real home and family in this world. And that even with all the magic and mayhem and wonderous discoveries, it is truth that is the most powerful weapon. We recommend it for readers aged 10 and up. We have loads of fans who are parents who read with their kids. Young adults and teens love it. Adults who relive their fondest childhood memories of reading. Grandparents and people of all ages adore this family saga. And - Larpers! I mean, how awesome is it to have fans so crazy about your story, they larp your series? Does it get any better? Maybe, a movie… someday. Anyway, we're glad you're here to discover this series. It's been likened to more contemporary reads, like The Discworld Series, Harry Potter, Garth Nix, and one of my all-time favorites, Ray Bradbury! As well as classic fan favorites like, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Neverending Story, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz... And I have to tell you, when a reviewer said that about my series, that was a crowning moment as I am a huge Bradbury fan - I even got a tattoo to prove it! I hope readers of all ages check out his works as they still feel timeless to me, even years after his passing. The Fated Chronicles loosely tells the story of my youth. I'm someone who didn't have the "traditional" upbringing of a stable, happy home. I spent most of my childhood protecting my siblings and friends and struggling just to survive each day. Unfortunately, I know far too many others who also lived a fight for survival kind of life and this story is for everyone who has ever had this struggle but never stopped fighting! And over time with much toil and trouble, were able to rise above the circumstance they were handed and find their true home and family in this world. This story is dedicated to every single one of you. I see you. I see the struggle you've survived. And even if you're still struggling, like me, to fully overcome a past thrust upon you -- you are still here. Still breathing. Still fighting. So, good on you! And please never give up. Because I guarantee you, whether you know it or not, there are people in this world grateful you exist. I really hope you enjoy reading this series as much as I did, writing it. And even though I do not like this part, we live in a conflicted world. So, I will warn you right now that this is an 11 book series that sees our characters age... they are just turning 13 when it starts and are 17 when it's ending -- kind of similar to how the Harry Potter characters age. This means some romance-- age-appropriate romances. However, I am a very love is love person, so, yes, there are gay couplings. It's a beautiful storyline one reader literally bawled her way through. And I admit, I bawled my way through writing it. There’s one scene later in the series that was so emotional to write, and meant so much to me, I had to take a break for a few days before I could keep writing. And that scene is dedicated not just to readers struggling with identity, but struggling with finding acceptance of any kind. Because, really, it’s all above finding our true loves and soulmates to travel through this life with. I think these reviews help sum up the series well: "This sweeping complex series of 11 books is riveting, rollicking and ultimately very satisfying. Following the lives of 3 young children in particular whose identities and relationships (like so many others in this saga) are not what they initially appear to be, these page-turners are packed with Magic, Pathos, Teenage Angst, Humor, Anticipation, Conspiracy, War and Peace, Bucolic Love, Time Travel... everything but the kitchen sink! I picked up Book 1 on a Friday night and binge read all 11 by Tuesday morning! If you ever thought you were somehow “Special,” or ever wanted to “Save the World,” these books are for YOU. Totally engaging and completely believable, the emotional roller coaster keeps the reader invested in each intricate convoluted detail while orchestrating its ultimate message of Love, with a few lessons in Morality along the way. So many comparisons to Past, Present and Future situations are readily apparent. So snuggle up on a rainy day and embark on a new adventure... I can promise you a surprise around every corner and some serious Fun!" - Amazon reviewer "Ascend, book 11 of the Fated Saga, was an absolute joy and surprise to read. While I believe most of us who have been along for the read since the beginning expected some sort of happy ending, I don't think anyone could have anticipated this. Ascend wraps up each and every character's story arc and leaves no stone unturned. *** The fact that the ending took me so completely by surprise is one of the things I loved most about this book. Each character felt like a real person, despite the magical world they lived in. The series, as a whole, dealt with topics like love, hate, discrimination, jealousy and finding yourself and was able to stay true to the story. Nothing felt contrived. The bottom line is just WOW. I was thrown by the twists I never saw coming as well as the resolutions I'd hoped for but had no idea how the author could bring about. I do hope we get to read about more of either the characters or the beautiful world created for them."

Writer and angler David DiBenedetto followed this great migration -- the fall run -- for three months in the autumn of 2001. On the Run offers vivid portrayals of the zany and obsessive characters DiBenedetto met on his travels -- including the country's most daring fisherman, an underwater videographer who chucked his corporate job in favor of filming striped bass, and the reclusive angler who claims that catching the world-record striper in 1982 sent his life into a tailspin. Along his route, DiBenedetto also delves into the natural history and biology of this great game fish, and depicts the colorful cultures of the seaside communities where the striped bass reigns supreme.

Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Douglas Clegg comes the Bram Stoker Award-winning collection The Nightmare Chronicles -- 13 spine-tingling tales of dark mystery, supernatural thrills and twisted horror which "can chill the spine so effectively that the reader should keep paramedics on standby, " says bestselling author Dean Koontz. “Clegg brings his stories together with a chilling fictive conceit....The effect is dangerously seductive.” -- Locus “Clegg's (The Halloween Man, etc.) collection of 13 tales takes risks and is full of passions that sometimes burst forth violently…Clegg's use of innovative metaphors catapults each story beyond a landscape crowded with the horror genre's usual monsters and madmen into a territory he alone can claim.” – Publisher’s Weekly “…Like M. R. James, Douglas Clegg can ‘write about the vile and horrific without seeming to smear it over himself or you.’ Like Shirley Jackson he has an understated precision of language and the ability to portray his characters emotionally in a wickedly effective manner. And, like Stephen King, he loves to tell stories and tells them well. At the same time, Clegg is a thoroughly modern writer...Without doubt, one of the best collections of the year. -- DarkEcho “Every story is perfectly different and definitely unlike any other horror novel/film I’ve read or watched…all of them have their images that could come back to you in your dreams.” – Doubleshot Reviews. “Clegg writes some of the most harrowing, unforgettable tales you're ever likely to come upon.. Clegg's best stories…slip into your subconscious and stay with you well beyond the last turning of the page...” – The Chiaroscuro “I was truly impressed with this collection, and was not surprised to learn that it received the 1999 International Horror Guild Award for Best Collection, and the 1999 Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Fiction Collection.” – Casual Debris Contains the short stories "Underworld" "O Rare and Most Exquisite" "The Rendering Man" "The Fruit of Her Womb" "The Hurting Season" "Chosen" "The Night Before Alec Got Married" "Only Connect" "The Little Mermaid," "Damned If You Do" "The Ripening Sweetness of Late Afternoon" Plus the acclaimed novelettes, "White Chapel" and "I Am Infinite, I Contain Multitudes."

Book The World War II Chronicles

Download or read book The World War II Chronicles written by Edward Ellsberg and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 1220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A navy admiral’s firsthand accounts of three triumphant operations in Europe and North Africa during World War II. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, naval engineering genius Edward Ellsberg came out of retirement to serve his country once again. In these three riveting histories, he recounts the incredible salvage missions and audacious battle plans he took part in during the Second World War. Under the Red Sea Sun: In 1942, Mussolini’s forces were on the run in East Africa. At Massawa, Eritrea, the fleeing Italians left the largest mass wreck in the world, turning a vital port into a tangle of shattered ships and dangerous booby traps. In order to continue the war effort and push back the Axis powers in Africa, the Allies enlisted Commander Ellsberg, who navigated the complicated American and British bureaucracies to pull off a historic feat of engineering—the largest of its kind the world had ever seen. The Far Shore: Rear Admiral Ellsberg describes in detail the meticulous preparation and efforts behind the Normandy Invasion—efforts that would keep the flow of men and materials streaming onto the beaches and into the heart of Europe. From dealing with the extremes of engineering possibilities to wrestling with the knowledge that countless lives depended on the success of his intricate planning, Ellsberg worked himself into exhaustion to do his part. Vividly described by a man who saw firsthand the horrors of war and the cost of victory, The Far Shore takes readers through the brutal surf, onto the bloody beaches, and into the mind of one of World War II’s little-known heroes. No Banners, No Bugles: In Oran, Algeria, a crucial port city, Ellsberg helped the Allies prepare for Operation Torch, the fight to reclaim North Africa from the Axis powers. As General Eisenhower’s chief of salvage in the Mediterranean, Ellsberg had to sort out the disorganized mess left by the Vichy French and find a way to open the harbor, though his flagging health proved to be a dangerous obstacle. No Banners, No Bugles is the riveting story of how Ellsberg, the miracle worker, tackled his greatest mission yet.

Book Chronicles of a Radical Hag with Recipes

Download or read book Chronicles of a Radical Hag with Recipes written by Lorna Landvik and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bittersweet, seriously funny novel of a life, a small town, and a key to our troubled times traced through a newspaper columnist’s half-century of taking in, and taking on, the world The curmudgeon who wrote the column “Ramblin’s by Walt” in the Granite Creek Gazette dismissed his successor as “puking on paper.” But when Haze Evans first appeared in the small-town newspaper, she earned fans by writing a story about her bachelor uncle who brought a Queen of the Rodeo to Thanksgiving dinner. Now, fifty years later, when the beloved columnist suffers a massive stroke and falls into a coma, publisher Susan McGrath fills the void (temporarily, she hopes) with Haze’s past columns, along with the occasional reprinted responses from readers. Most letters were favorable, although Haze did have her trolls; one Joseph Snell in particular dubbed her “liberal” ideas the “chronicles of a radical hag.” Never censoring herself, Haze chose to mollify her critics with homey recipes—recognizing, in her constantly practical approach to the world and her community, that buttery Almond Crescents will certainly “melt away any misdirected anger.” Framed by news stories of half a century and annotated with the town’s chorus of voices, Haze’s story unfolds, as do those of others touched by the Granite Creek Gazette, including Susan, struggling with her troubled marriage, and her teenage son Sam, who—much to his surprise—enjoys his summer job reading the paper archives and discovers secrets that have been locked in the files for decades, along with sad and surprising truths about Haze’s past. With her customary warmth and wit, Lorna Landvik summons a lifetime at once lost and recovered, a complicated past that speaks with knowing eloquence to a confused present. Her topical but timeless Chronicles of a Radical Hag reminds us—sometimes with a subtle touch, sometimes with gobsmacking humor—of the power of words and of silence, as well as the wonder of finding in each other what we never even knew we were missing.
