APPOINTED COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF 29 the withdrawal of Lawrence's powers; but it was found impracticable to do this. He was also dissatisfied at the failure of the Company to enforce necessary measures for the maintenance of discipline. He had no proper authority over his men, and his pay was miserably small. On the 25th September, he resigned the Company's service, and sailed for England a month later. The Directors acted with a sagacity that they did not always show in similar circumstances. They packed Lawrence back to India before he had been two months in England, with the appointment of Commander-in-Chief of all the Company's military forces in the East Indies, on a salary of 500 per annum, to which was added a yearly allowance of 250 "in lieu of diet money, servants, horses, and all other privileges and perquisites whatever." He was also commissioned to consider at once of the proper establishment for forming a company of artillery at Fort St. George. The most stirring part of Lawrence's career was about to commence. II. TRICHIN0P0LY On the 14th March, 1752, Lawrence again landed in Madras, and at once took command of the army that was about to march under Clive. At this time a Political Committee of the Council was formed for the first time. It consisted of three members, of whom Lawrence was one. During his absence, the unofficial war between the English and French Companies, acting as auxiliaries of the rival claimants to the Nawabship of the Carnatic, had been prosecuted with vigour, and Clive had sprung into notice by his feats at Arcot and Covripauk. During Lawrence's absence a dangerous spirit of discontent had arisen among the officers, owing to a breach of faith, on the part of Government, affecting their allowances, and...

Download or read book Stringer Lawrence the Father of the Indian Army Classic Reprint written by J. Biddulph and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stringer Lawrence, the Father of the Indian Army France. Lawrence was the second and the most distinguished of the little band of English officers whose services were transferred from the Crown to the Company, and who wrote their names so deeply in the history of our earlier wars in India. He was also the first English commander-in-chief in India. Nor was Lawrence's merit confined to his services in the field. By his good judgment, unfailing common sense and uprightness of character, he secured the confidence of his masters in England and of his colleagues in India to a degree that no others of his time were able to attain. Alone among his contemporaries, he stands distin guished as the only man in a prominent posi tion whom no voice of dislike or malice ever assailed. Some account of his operations round Trichi nopoly has been given by Lawrence himself; but with characteristic modesty he has told his story so briefly as almost to deprive it of interest. Orme's history contains a detailed account of Lawrence's campaigns, but they are intermingled with such a mass of details in which Lawrence was not concerned, that Lawrence's own personality is lost sight of. Download or read book The Company s Sword written by Christina Welsch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth century, it was a cliché that the East India Company ruled India 'by the sword.' Christina Welsch shows how Indian and European soldiers shaped and challenged the Company's political expansion and how elite officers turned those dynamics into a bid for 'stratocracy' – a state dominated by its army. Combining colonial records with Mughal Persian sources from Indian states, The Company's Sword offers new insight into India's eighteenth-century military landscape, showing how elite officers positioned themselves as the sole actors who could navigate, understand, and control those networks. Focusing on south India, rather than the Company's better-studied territories in Bengal, the analysis provides a new approach, chronology, and geography through which to understand the Company Raj. It offers a fresh perspective of the Company's collapse after the rebellions of 1857, tracing the deep roots of that conflict to the Company's eighteenth-century development.
