Just Miller's erudite introduction by itself is worth the price of this sparkling collection." - S. Abbas Raza, Managing Editor of 3 Quarks Daily "Putting together a theory of everything requires a lot of creativity, and more than a little audacity - qualities which are also abundant in this collection of stories and poems inspired by string theory. Riffing on Strings is guaranteed to stimulate both hemispheres of your brain." - Sean Carroll, Theoretical Physicist, California Institute of Technology & Creator of Cosmic Variance

Book The Little Book of String Theory

Download or read book The Little Book of String Theory written by Steven S. Gubser and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-08 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential beginner's guide to string theory The Little Book of String Theory offers a short, accessible, and entertaining introduction to one of the most talked-about areas of physics today. String theory has been called the "theory of everything." It seeks to describe all the fundamental forces of nature. It encompasses gravity and quantum mechanics in one unifying theory. But it is unproven and fraught with controversy. After reading this book, you'll be able to draw your own conclusions about string theory. Steve Gubser begins by explaining Einstein's famous equation E = mc2, quantum mechanics, and black holes. He then gives readers a crash course in string theory and the core ideas behind it. In plain English and with a minimum of mathematics, Gubser covers strings, branes, string dualities, extra dimensions, curved spacetime, quantum fluctuations, symmetry, and supersymmetry. He describes efforts to link string theory to experimental physics and uses analogies that nonscientists can understand. How does Chopin's Fantasie-Impromptu relate to quantum mechanics? What would it be like to fall into a black hole? Why is dancing a waltz similar to contemplating a string duality? Find out in the pages of this book. The Little Book of String Theory is the essential, most up-to-date beginner's guide to this elegant, multidimensional field of physics.

Book Rickenbacker Electric 12 String

Download or read book Rickenbacker Electric 12 String written by Tony Bacon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Byrds recorded their hit version of Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man they popularized a new sound in pop music: the electric 12-string guitar. Rickenbacker is the guitar maker that brought the electric 12-string to market and has since been almost single-handedly responsible for establishing what such a guitar should do. The California company gave one of its earliest 12-strings to George Harrison of the Beatles on the group's first tour of the United States in 1964. He immediately used it live and in the studio and showed off the sound of electric jangle to the rest of the world. This book tells the story of those heady days in the '60s of the competitors who tried and failed to match the sound and of the instrument's continuing production by Rickenbacker and use by many modern guitarists. Complete with high-quality photos and exclusive interviews with many of the 12-string's leading players this is the best guide yet to the history of the sound of jingle-jangle.

Complete and thorough in its coverage, this new edition now includes AdS/CFT correspondence and introduces superstrings. It is perfectly suited to introductory courses in string theory for students with a background in mathematics and physics. New sections cover strings on orbifolds, cosmic strings, moduli stabilization, and the string theory landscape. Now with almost 300 problems and exercises, with password-protected solutions for instructors at www.cambridge.org/zwiebach.

Book Spectral Analysis of Musical Sounds with Emphasis on the Piano

Download or read book Spectral Analysis of Musical Sounds with Emphasis on the Piano written by David M. Koenig and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the analysis of musical sounds from the viewpoint of someone at the intersection between physicists, engineers, piano technicians, and musicians. The study is structured into three parts. The reader is introduced to a variety of waves and a variety of ways of presenting, visualizing, and analyzing them in the first part. A tutorial on the tools used throughout the book accompanies this introduction. The mathematics behind the tools is left to the appendices. Part Two provides a graphical survey of the classical areas of acoustics that pertain to musical instruments: vibrating strings, bars, membranes, and plates. Part Three is devoted almost exclusively to the piano. Several two- and three-dimensional graphical tools are introduced to study various characteristics of pianos: individual notes and interactions among them, the missing fundamental, inharmonicity, tuning visualization, the different distribution of harmonic power for the various zones of the piano keyboard, and potential uses for quality control. These techniques are also briefly applied to other musical instruments studied in earlier parts of the book. For physicists and engineers there are appendices to cover the mathematics lurking beneath the numerous graphs and a brief introduction to Matlab® which was used to generate these graphs. A website accompanying the book (https://sites.google.com/site/analysisofsoundsandvibrations/) contains: - Matlab® scripts - mp3 files of sounds - references to YouTube videos - and up-to-date results of recent studies

Book Non critical String Theory

Download or read book Non critical String Theory written by Stanislav Klimenko and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relativistic string theory was born in 1960s. The stimulus was an observation that the dual model of hadronic interactions proposed by Veneziano is adequate not to the quantum theory of usual (null-dimensional) particles but to the theory of one-dimensional relativistic objects -- the strings. It has been immediately found that a self-consistent quantum theory of (bosonic) relativistic strings can be constructed in frames of standard quantisation scheme only in a space-time of dimension 26. Inclusion of fermions has decreased this critical dimension to 10. However, it is evident from the experiment, that elementary particles and their constituents 'live' in the space-time of dimension 4. The attempt to show that extra 6 dimensions are compactified on the scale of Planck's length, in the spirit of old ideas by Kaluza-Klein, just created further complications. This book differs from traditional presentations of the classical and quantum theory of relativistic strings by two aspects. First, it proposes and consistently implements an idea of mathematical modelling and computer visualisation of topologically non-trivial solutions of the classical equations of motion of relativistic strings. Second, on this basis it successfully implements a quantisation scheme, originating from the papers by G P Pron'ko, which uses a different set of dynamical variables, canonically equivalent to the variables of standard scheme, in frames of Hamiltonian formalism and Dirac's quantisation procedure.

Book DIY String Art

Download or read book DIY String Art written by Jesse Dresbach and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This isn't your summer camp string art! String art is making a comeback with seemingly endless new designs, and author Jesse Drebach's modern, more flexible approach lets you methodically string away to your heart's content. This book is full of patterns--simple to more intricate designs--that help you quickly get to the fun part of the craft--the stringing! Jesse walks you through his tool room, and even includes tips on cutting and preparing the right size boards. He shares how to structure the nails using paper patterns and details several stringing techniques. DIY String Art includes simple geometrics, nature-inspired motifs worked on tree slices, zodiac signs, and even patterns for negative space string art where you fill in the entire board everywhere but inside the chosen motif. These are cool, urban designs, some with random string work, some with faceted sections and still others with specific string paths to achieve more uniform results, and they look amazing no matter where you hang them. Jesse's double-wrap technique lets you add pronounced details and even create a string frame--he's thought of, basically, everything you need to know to string a gallery of modern art!
