Recent studies have shown that up to 85% of runners get injured every year, how natural is that? The most important question that running "barefoot" or "naturally" doesn't address is how we should run. Repetitive ground impact forces are at the root of most running injuries. A 30 minute jog can log more than 5,000 foot strikes; its because of this volume of movement that efficient

Book Striking a Pose

Download or read book Striking a Pose written by Katrina Abbott and published by Over The Cliff Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clayton Henshaw has had enough of drama. Now that the school year has begun, he’s determined to buckle down and get top marks at the Westwood Academy. It might be the only way to convince his father, once and for all, that West Point is not the place for him. MIT is his dream school, but his father—former military and high ranking security official—isn’t convinced. Even though Clay got expelled from his military prep school (on purpose? He’ll never say for sure.) his dad still thinks the service is the life for his only son. Clay’s only way out might be to get a scholarship. Then his father will have no say. It's not like he has a social life that will interfere with his studying time. Especially after last year when he discovered the girl he used to crush on attends Rosewood, the all-female school down the road. Why is that bad news? That girl is dating his best friend and roommate. Trying to keep his crush a secret, Clay swears off social events. Best to fly under the radar until graduation. But his well-meaning roommate has other ideas. Clay fights the pressure, but when it looks like his plan to avoid Rosewood might just work, he gets recruited for his community service assignment at Rosewood. He’s stuck helping out new girl, Indigo O’Reilly, with her art project. The two butt heads—she’s prickly and oversensitive, and Clay doesn’t understand art—it’s math and physics that make the world go around, after all. But then Clay makes a grave mistake. One that might cost him not only his future, but his place at the school. And maybe worst of all? His best friend. When Indigo steps in, he has no choice but to let her help him. Maybe the buttons she presses aren’t all the wrong ones. And the more they work together, the more they realize they might just have something in common. Book Affective Movements Methods and Pedagogies

Download or read book Affective Movements Methods and Pedagogies written by Anne Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affective Movements, Methods and Pedagogies invites readers to think with affect about performance, pedagogies and their inherent activist, embodied and collective natures. It works across multiple spheres to help readers understand how to deploy affective approaches rather than to simply think with affect theory about traditional methods. The book is structured and curated across three main thematic sections: affective movements, methods and pedagogies, each of which treats the core explorations of affect and performance through a different perspective. It is concerned with the ways performance and theatrical methods work with and through a theoretics of affect. The sixteen chapters include work that models theoretical practices in writing, and demonstrates how theorising affect and its methods is itself a performative practice. The contributors offer rich examples from diverse geopolitical as well as disciplinary contexts, innovative methods, and finally, intersectional theoretics. This collection will be of interest to higher education students exploring methodologies, and academic researchers and teachers in the fields of performance studies, communication, critical studies, sociology and the arts.

Book excerpt: MORE THAN HALF A MILLION COPIES SOLD: Learn the simple techniques you'll need to approach your biggest challenges with confidence. Have you ever left a nerve-racking challenge and immediately wished for a do over? Maybe after a job interview, a performance, or a difficult conversation? The very moments that require us to be genuine and commanding can instead cause us to feel phony and powerless. Too often we approach our lives' biggest hurdles with dread, execute them with anxiety, and leave them with regret. By accessing our personal power, we can achieve "presence," the state in which we stop worrying about the impression we're making on others and instead adjust the impression we've been making on ourselves. As Harvard professor Amy Cuddy's revolutionary book reveals, we don't need to embark on a grand spiritual quest or complete an inner transformation to harness the power of presence. Instead, we need to nudge ourselves, moment by moment, by tweaking our body language, behavior, and mind-set in our day-to-day lives. Amy Cuddy has galvanized tens of millions of viewers around the world with her TED talk about "power poses." Now she presents the enthralling science underlying these and many other fascinating body-mind effects, and teaches us how to use simple techniques to liberate ourselves from fear in high-pressure moments, perform at our best, and connect with and empower others to do the same. Brilliantly researched, impassioned, and accessible, Presence is filled with stories of individuals who learned how to flourish during the stressful moments that once terrified them. Every reader will learn how to approach their biggest challenges with confidence instead of dread, and to leave them with satisfaction instead of regret. "Presence feels at once concrete and inspiring, simple but ambitious — above all, truly powerful." —New York Times Book Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helping teachers bust frustration before it even begins! Frustration is universal, even for the most effective and experienced teachers. The steady drip of forgotten pencils, classroom disruptions, and unrealistic expectations can chip away at our resolve, creating a chasm between our love of teaching and our ability to continue happily in our chosen profession. Even more, frustrated teachers pass their stress on to students, who can experience academic losses and instability from high teacher turnover. Author Katie Powell knows that there's no "right" way to respond to specific frustrations. Instead, this book provides a process teachers can use to respond to difficult situations in healthy, effective ways that align with their own teaching style and goals. Frustration Busters helps teachers identify the source of frustrations, learn how to tackle them when they arise, and implement practices that will help prevent them from occurring in the first place. It's filled with ideas for practical application that support a positive classroom experience. "This book provides real, usable solutions that any teacher can deploy to break through common classroom frustrations." -Stephanie Simpson, chief executive officer of the Association for Middle Level Education "This is the practical, compassionate, evidence-based guide every educator needs." -Phyllis Fagell, LCPC, author of Middle School Matters: The 10 Key Skills Kids Need to Thrive in Middle School and Beyond-and How Parents Can Help "The book is filled with purposeful anecdotes paired with practical strategies that teachers can refer to in times of need." -Phil Strunk, teacher and moderator of Wins and Losses Chat

Book A Kamigata Anthology

Download or read book A Kamigata Anthology written by Sumie Jones and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a three-volume anthology of Edo- and Meiji-era urban literature that includes An Edo Anthology: Literature from Japan’s Mega-City, 1750–1850 and A Tokyo Anthology: Literature from Japan’s Modern Metropolis, 1850–1920. The present work focuses on the years in which bourgeois culture first emerged in Japan, telling the story of the rising commoner arts of Kamigata, or the “Upper Regions” of Kyoto and Osaka, which harkened back to Japan’s middle ages even as they rebelled against and competed with that earlier era. Both cities prided themselves on being models and trendsetters in all cultural matters, whether arts, crafts, books, or food. The volume also shows how elements of popular arts that germinated during this period ripened into the full-blown consumer culture of the late-Edo period. The tendency to imagine Japan’s modernity as a creation of Western influence since the mid-nineteenth century is still strong, particularly outside Japan studies. A Kamigata Anthology challenges such assumptions by illustrating the flourishing phenomenon of Japan’s movement into its own modernity through a selection of the best examples from the period, including popular genres such as haikai poetry, handmade picture scrolls, travel guidebooks, kabuki and joruri plays, prose narratives of contemporary life, and jokes told by professional entertainers. Well illustrated with prints from popular books of the time and hand scrolls and standing screens containing poems and commentaries, the entertaining and vibrant translations put a spotlight on texts currently unavailable in English.
