Book Precision Strike Warfare and International Intervention

Download or read book Precision Strike Warfare and International Intervention written by Mike Aaronson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores whether the new capabilities made possible by precision-strike technologies are reshaping approaches to international intervention. Since the end of the Cold War, US technological superiority has led to a more proactive and, some would argue, high risk approach to international military intervention. New technologies including the capacity to mount precision military strikes from high-level bombing campaigns and, more recently, the selective targeting of individuals from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have facilitated air campaigns, supported by Special Forces, without the commitment of large numbers of troops on the ground. Such campaigns include, for example, NATO’s high-level aerial bombardment of Milosevic’s forces in Kosovo in 1999 and of Gaddafi’s in Libya in 2011, and the US operation involving Special Forces against Osama Bin Laden. The development of UAVs and electronic data intercept technologies has further expanded the potential scope of interventions, for example against Islamic militants in the tribal areas of Pakistan. This volume examines three key and interrelated dimensions of these new precision-strike capabilities: (1) the strategic and foreign policy drivers and consequences; (2) the legal and moral implications of the new capabilities; and (3), the implications for decision-making at the strategic, operational and tactical levels. This book will be of much interest to students of war and technology, air power, international intervention, security studies and IR.

Book The Strike at Shane s A Prize Story of Indiana

Download or read book The Strike at Shane s A Prize Story of Indiana written by Gene Stratton-Porter and published by Pierides Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the Shanes, a farm family of Indiana in the late nineteenth century. Farmer Shane and his son Tom viciously mistreat the animals in and around their farm. Horses are whipped and overworked; cats and dogs are kicked; birds and chickens are shot "for practise" all despite the protests from Mrs. Shane and daughter Edith, the animals' last refuge from the farmers' daily abuse. One day the animals convene a meeting under an oak tree and testify to the cruelty of the Shane men. They determine to go on a sit-down strike/sabotage campaign to pressure Farmer Shane and his son to change their behaviour. But what they truly change in Farmer Shane is far deeper than a dark tendency for abuse - it is a transformation no one ever expected. Gene Stratton-Porter's inspiring work was a prize winner in the American Humane Society's contest of 1893. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pierides Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book Drone Strike Analyzing the Impacts of Targeted Killing

Download or read book Drone Strike Analyzing the Impacts of Targeted Killing written by Mitt Regan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intense debate over US targeted drone strikes outside war zones has been limited by the failure to review and assess a considerable body of quantitative research and qualitative material on the impacts of such strikes on terrorist groups and civilians. This book fills an important gap in the literature by conducting a careful and rigorous review of such evidence. It argues that decisions about the use of targeted strikes as a counterterrorism instrument, as well as legal and ethical evaluations of such use, must be informed by our best understanding of the insights that empirical evidence can provide on the effectiveness of strikes and the costs they impose on populations where they occur.

Book A Practice of Ethics for Global Politics

Download or read book A Practice of Ethics for Global Politics written by Jack L. Amoureux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kind of ethics in world politics is possible if there is no foundation for moral knowledge or global reality is at least complex and contingent? Furthermore, how can an ethics grapple with difference, a persistent and confounding feature for global politics? This book responds to the call for a bold and creative approach to ethics that avoids assuming or aspiring to universality, and instead prioritizes difference, complexity and uncertainty by turning to reflexivity, not as method or methodology, but as a practice of ethics for politics. This practice, ‘ethical reflexivity’, offers individuals, organizations and communities tools to recognize, interrogate and potentially change the stories they tell about politics—about constraints, notions of responsibility and visions of desirability. The benefits and limits of ethical reflexivity are investigated by the author, who engages writing on critique, rhetoric, affect and relationality, and carefully considers dominant and alternative framings of difficult issues in International Relations (IR)—the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, and the US policies of ‘enhanced interrogation’ and drone strikes. This path-breaking study provokes new possibilities for agency and action and contributes to a growing literature in IR on reflexivity by uniquely elaborating its promise as an ethics for politics, and by drawing on thinkers less utilized in discussions of reflexivity such as Hannah Arendt, Michel Foucault and Aristotle. This book will appeal to scholars and upper-level graduates in several sub-fields of IR, including international/global ethics, IR theory, global governance, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, foreign policy analysis and US foreign policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John McCord's last chance to win a championship is fading away as his Rockets play sub 500 ball for the first two months of the baseball season. The team has a powerful lineup, yet they cannot win with any consistency due to their lack of pitching. John's grandson is saved in a near-miss car accident when a stranger risks his own life before disappearing from the scene. John searches and finally finds the stranger, Brian Shane. He offers to do anything to thank him for saving his grandson, but all of John's suggestions are rejected by Brian. Brian then states the one thing that he will accept, a chance to pitch for the Rockets. John realizes this middle-aged man with no baseball experience has no chance of helping his team win, but the thought of finally repaying him is overwhelming. He agrees on a one-dollar contract, where Brian pitches until he loses one game. Brian quickly gets a nick name, Heart Attack, because he constantly has the fans, his teammates, and their manager on the edge of their seats every time he takes the mound. Margaret, a sportswriter, becomes very fond of Brian and believes he is somehow angelic and threatens to expose him. Brian insists that it's not true and begs her to drop that thought. The question becomes, Is John repaying Brian, or is it Brian helping the McCords again? Has Brian been sent to save the season by an unknown force, or is luck the defining power, or perhaps something else? Either way, it is the best dollar ever spent.

Book International Law and Drone Strikes in Pakistan

Download or read book International Law and Drone Strikes in Pakistan written by Sikander Ahmed Shah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While conventional warfare has an established body of legal precedence, the legality of drone strikes by the United States in Pakistan and elsewhere remains ambiguous. This book explores the legal and political issues surrounding the use of drones in Pakistan. Drawing from international treaty law, customary international law, and statistical data on the impact of the strikes, Sikander Ahmed Shah asks whether drone strikes by the United States in Pakistan are in compliance with international humanitarian law. The book questions how international law views the giving of consent between States for military action, and explores what this means for the interaction between sovereignty and consent. The book goes on to look at the socio-political realities of drone strikes in Pakistan, scrutinizing the impact of drone strikes on both Pakistani politics and US-Pakistan relationships. Topics include the Pakistan army-government relationship, the evolution of international institutions as a result of drone strikes, and the geopolitical dynamics affecting the region. As a detailed and critical examination of the legal and political challenges presented by drone strikes, this book will be essential to scholars and students of the law of armed conflict, security studies, political science and international relations.
