Book excerpt: Hands-on Help is a narrative review of the mushrooming field of computer-aided psychotherapy for mental health problems as a whole, from the time it began in the 1960’s through to the present day. The many types of computer-aided psychotherapy and how each might be accessed are detailed together with the pros and cons of such help and the functions it can serve. The authors review prevention as well as treatment. The book describes and summarizes 97 computer-aided self-help systems in 175 studies according to the types of problem they aim to alleviate. These include phobic, panic, obsessive-compulsive and post-traumatic disorders, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sexual problems, smoking, alcohol and drug misuse, schizophrenia, insomnia, pain and tinnitus distress, and childhood problems such as encopresis, autism and asthma. Within each type of problem the systems are described according to whether they are used on the internet, CD-ROM, phone, handheld or other device. The final chapter shows how internet self-help systems with phone or email support allow clinics to become more virtual than physical. It also discusses methods of screening suitability and of supporting users, constraints to delivery, uptake and completion, cost-effectiveness, and the place of computer-aided self-help in healthcare provision. This informative book will be essential reading for psychiatrists, psychologists and all other mental health professionals interested in broadening their understanding of computer-aided psychotherapy.

Book Stress Echocardiography

Download or read book Stress Echocardiography written by Eugenio Picano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sixth edition is enriched by over 300 figures, 150 tables and a video-companion collecting more than 100 cases also presented in the format of short movies and teaching cartoons. This extensively revised and enlarged edition of this long-seller documents the very significant advances made since the fifth (2009) edition and is entirely written by Eugenio Picano, a pioneer in the field sharing his lifetime experience with the help of an international panel of 50 contributors from 22 countries representing some of the best available knowledge and expertise in their respective field. In a societal and economic climate of increasing pressure for appropriate, justified and optimized imaging, stress echocardiography offers the great advantages of being radiation-free, relatively low cost, and with a staggering versatility: we can get more (information) with less (cost and risk). For a long time, the scope and application of stress echo remained focused on coronary artery disease. In the last ten years, it has exploded in its breadth and variety of applications. From a black-and-white, one-fits-all approach (wall motion by 2D-echo in the patient with known or suspected coronary artery disease) now we have moved on to a omnivorous, next-generation laboratory employing a variety of technologies (from M-Mode to 2D and pulsed, continuous, color and tissue Doppler, to lung ultrasound and real time 3D echo, 2D speckle tracking and myocardial contrast echo) on patients covering the entire spectrum of severity (from elite athletes to patients with end-stage heart failure) and ages (from children with congenital heart disease to the elderly with low-flow, low-gradient aortic stenosis).

Book Stress Management and Your Health

Download or read book Stress Management and Your Health written by Phd. Joseph Nii Abekar Mensah and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress is a major problem that affects nearly everyone. Stress is believed to be number one killer in most industrialized societies. Throughout the centuries, professionals and the wider public have attempted to find ways to manage or alleviate stress and its impact on our health. Cannon's Stimulus Response theory and Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome have helped us understand the psychological and physiological mechanisms associated with stress. In the author's view, what is needed is an integrated approach in understanding stress, its causes, and its effects on the human being, both physiologically and psychologically. Stress Management and Your Health shows the ways we minimize stress, as well psycho-therapeutic theories and techniques for managing stress. Stress management techniques have also been explored cross-culturally. This information is useful to the wider public, students, mental health professionals, and mental health educators. Joseph Nii Abekar Mensah, PhD, is currently a Clinical/Educational Consultant with Progressive Learning Institute & Counselling services in Calgary. Born and raised in Accra, Ghana, he pursued studies in applied biology in London with specialization in pharmacology. Dr. Mensah also holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology and in education. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/JosephNiiAbekarMensah

Book Cognitive Therapy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr Diana J Sanders
  • Publisher : SAGE
  • Release : 2005-10-18
  • ISBN : 1446203867
  • Pages : 269 pages

Download or read book Cognitive Therapy written by Dr Diana J Sanders and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2005-10-18 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `It is... particularly useful that main points are summarised in tables, making this a very easy-to-read book. It is evident from the way the material is presented that the authors are experienced therapists, who have a deep understanding of the cognitive therapy process per se and the applications of cognitive theory in general. Case studies are presented throughout the book to illustrate the theory, offering valuable educational material to the readers. The book has also been written with an open mind, providing a balanced overview of both the strengths and limitations of an evidence-based therapeutic model. I believe that it will make a useful source for all those professionals who wish to introduce themselves to cognitive therapy as well as an excellent introductory training textbook' - Accident and Emergency Nursing `This is an excellent summary of the current status of cognitive therapy, describing as it does both the basic approach, tools and techniques of the 'traditional' model, and the more recent developments in the field. It is well organized and easy to read, usefully illustrated with case examples, and each chapter is supported by a specific further reading list. In my view, it is appropriate for both the cognitive therapist in training and for the more experienced therapist who wants a stimulating and helpful summary of the new ideas in the area, and wants to reflect on therapeutic process as much as content' - Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry `This volume should be the first stop for mental health practitioners from all disciplines looking for an introduction to the basic art and ideas of cognitive therapy' - Adrian Wells, Professor in Clinical Psychology, University of Manchester Diana Sanders and Frank Wills explain the central concepts on which cognitive therapy is based and describe how the model can effectively be put into practice. They take the reader through the stages of the therapeutic process, emphasizing the practical skills involved and providing examples to illustrate each stage in the process. Reflecting recent developments in both theory and practice, the Second Edition of Cognitive Therapy has been fully revised and presents an up-to-date picture of how therapeutic change takes place across a 'network' of cognitive, emotional and behavioural functioning, reinforcing the holistic trend identified in the first edition. This edition also features new sections on: - applications of cognitive therapy - metacognition - mindfulness - the therapeutic relationship, and - behavioural experiments. As an accessible introduction to contemporary theory and practice, Cognitive Therapy is an ideal text for those working - or training to work - in the psychological therapies and mental health. Diana Sanders is Consultant Counselling Psychologist, Clinical Associate, Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre, and Principal Counselling Psychologist, Department of Psychological Medicine, Oxfordshire Mental Healthcare NHS Trust. Frank Wills is and Independent Cognitive Psychotherapist, Bristol and Tutor, University of Wales Newport.

Book Counselling for Anxiety Problems

Download or read book Counselling for Anxiety Problems written by Diana Sanders and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2002-12-20 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Any cognitive therapy text which quotes from Alice in Wonderland is off to a good start - and in the case of Counselling for Anxiety Problems, it gets better and better. This is an excellent book written by counselling psychologists, aimed primarily at counselling psychologists. Diana Sanders and Frank Wills are experienced cognitive therapists, who, through various books, are performing a valuable role of building bridges between counsellors and the practice of cognitive therapists. In doing so, they lay to rest many of the misconceptions counsellors may have about cognitive therapy (often based on an 80s version of the therapy), and place particular emphasis on the central importance of therapeutic relationship in cognitive therapy, as in counselling. Their review and discussion of the anxiety disorders is comprehensive and contemporary, as indicated by the number of references from the past five years. Furthermore their clinical experience, as well as their humour, shines through. Although primarily aimed at the counselling market, it will be just as useful for therapists from a variety of backgrounds. I can thoroughly recommend this book′ - Amazon Review Anxiety is one of the most common psychological problems for which people seek help. Through research, major advances have been made in understanding the causes of anxiety, the different forms it takes and how problems perpetuate. In turn this has led to the development of more targeted ways of helping sufferers. Based on these findings, Counselling for Anxiety Problems, Second Edition presents accessible and up-to-date guidelines on the most effective ways of helping clients with anxiety problems. The authors outline general methods of working with anxiety sufferers and highlight the issues specific to this client group. Counsellors need to select appropriate interventions depending on the particular problems experienced by each client. The second part of the book therefore shows how to adapt counselling interventions to different forms of anxiety, such as: - panic - worry - agoraphobia - social and other phobias - health anxiety, and - obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Whilst being cognitive in focus, the book is accessible to counsellors from different orientations who wish to broaden their understanding and skills in relation to anxiety. Based on the authors′ own clinical experience, the book makes extensive use of detailed case examples to illustrate different ways of formulating and working with anxiety. Counselling for Anxiety Problems, Second Edition is suitable for practitioners of all levels, from those in training to those with more experience who wish to update and refresh their methods of working with anxious clients.
