Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanics of structures with initial stresses is a traditional part of structural mechanics. It is closely related to the important problem of stability of structures. The basic concepts of elastic stability of structures go back to works by Euler (1759) and Bryan (1889). Later, it was found that the problem of deformation of solids with initial stresses is related to variational principles and nonlinear problems in elasticity; see Trefftz (1933), Marguerre (1938), Prager (1947), Hill (1958), Washuzu (1982). Historical detail up to the 1940s can be found in the book by Timoshenko (1953). Observing the basic concepts of the traditional mechanics of stressed structures, we agree that these are suitable for uniform structural elements (plates, beams, and so on) made of homogeneous materials, but not for complex structures (such as a network plate or a lattice mast) or structures made of composite materials (such as fiber reinforced or textile materials). Many concepts of the classical theory, such as a cross section or neutral plane (axis), correspond to no mechanical objects if we consider an inhomogeneous structure. As a result, we come to the conclusion that it would be useful to have a theory of thin inhomogeneous structures developed on the basis of 3-D elasticity theory with no simplifying assumptions (with no a priori hypothesis).

This offers possibilities to simplify the process chain, to decrease manufacturing costs and to have fibre fair structural design. The critical disadvantage of large integral designs is that process-induced deformations are a risk factor during the design phase of the manufacturing process, because rework is not always possible. Especially, the aircraft industry with its demands on high qualities / tolerances and the application of hot curing resin systems, requires knowledge-based methods for virtual process design to avoid time- and effort-consuming iterations. This thesis contributes to the understanding of the mechanism behind process-induced distortions and stresses related to the Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) manufacturing process. The aim is to comprehend the phenomena, to identify related parameters and to present compensation strategies.

Book excerpt: This book has one single purpose: to present the development of the partial hybrid finite element method for the stress analysis of laminated composite structures. The reason for this presentation is because the authors believe that partial hybrid finite element method is more efficient that the displacement based finite element method for the stress analysis oflaminated composites. In fact, the examples in chapter 5 of this book show that the partial hybrid finite element method is about 5 times more efficient than the displacement based finite element method. Since there is a great need for accurate and efficient calculation of interlaminar stresses for the design using composites, the partial hybrid finite method does provide one possible solution. Hybrid finite method has been in existence since 1964 and a significant amount of work has been done on the topic. However, the authors are not aware of any systematic piece of literature that gives a detailed presentation of the method. Chapters of the displacement finite element method and the evolution 1 and 2 present a sununary of the hybrid finite element method. Hopefully, these two chapters can provide the readers with an appreciation for the difference between the displacement finite element method and the hybrid finite element. It also should prepare the readers for the introduction of partial hybrid finite element method presented in chapter 3.
