Book Strength of Sensitive Clay Under Cyclic Loading

Download or read book Strength of Sensitive Clay Under Cyclic Loading written by Khalid Javed and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensitive clay is a kind of clay, which loses its shear strength when it is subjected to cyclic loading. High-rise buildings, towers, bridges etc., founded on sensitive clays usually suffer from reduction of the safety factor during its life span. Cyclic loading on foundation of sensitive clay during the undrained period may lead to quick clay condition and a catastrophic failure of the structure. In the literature, governing parameters such as cyclic deviator stress, pore water pressure, axial strain, pre-consolidation pressure, confining stress, initial degree of saturation, water content, liquidity index and the number of cycles are divided into two categories and then presented as a function of sensitivity. Nevertheless the limited data available has restricted the use of empirical formulae. It is of interest to note that sensitive clay's shear strength increases due to consolidation and decreases due to cyclic load. In this case, the pre-consolidation pressure plays the role of governing parameter. In this investigation, the experimental results available at Concordia University as well as the data available in literature will be used to evaluate the empirical formulae and models. The governing parameters will be evaluated on this basis. Based on this analysis, a procedure to assist practicing engineers in designing foundation on sensitive clay is proposed.

Book Stress Strain Strength Characteristics of a Marine Soil with Different Clay Contents

Download or read book Stress Strain Strength Characteristics of a Marine Soil with Different Clay Contents written by J-H Yin and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is commonly believed that the clay content has a major influence on the behavior of a soil, among other factors. This technical note presents main results of a series of consolidated undrained (CU) triaxial tests on re-consolidated soft Hong Kong marine deposits (HKMD) with different clay contents. The focus is placed on the influence of the clay content on the stress-strain strength characteristics of the HKMD, including the stress-strain curves, effective stress paths, friction angles, and Young's modulus. The results are discussed and interpreted. New understanding and useful correlations are presented.

Book Mechanical Behaviour of Engineering Materials

Download or read book Mechanical Behaviour of Engineering Materials written by Joachim Roesler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-10-16 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do engineering materials deform when bearing mechanical loads? To answer this crucial question, the book bridges the gap between continuum mechanics and materials science. The different kinds of material deformation are explained in detail. The book also discusses the physical processes occurring during the deformation of all classes of engineering materials and shows how these materials can be strengthened to meet the design requirements. It provides the knowledge needed in selecting the appropriate engineering material for a certain design problem. This book is both a valuable textbook and a useful reference for graduate students and practising engineers.

Book Engineering Geology for Underground Rocks

Download or read book Engineering Geology for Underground Rocks written by Suping Peng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-10-14 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professionals and students in any geology-related field will find this an essential reference. It clearly and systematically explains underground engineering geology principles, methods, theories and case studies. The authors lay out engineering problems in underground rock engineering and how to study and solve them. The book specially emphasizes mechanical and hydraulic couplings in rock engineering for wellbore stability, mining near aquifers and other underground structures where inflow is a problem.
