Book Stress Intensity Factors in a Reinforced Thick Walled Cylinder

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors in a Reinforced Thick Walled Cylinder written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An elastic thick-walled cylinder containing a radial crack is considered. It is assumed that the cylinder is reinforced by an elastic membrane on its inner surface. The model is intended to simulate pressure vessels with cladding. The formulation of the problem is reduced to a singular integral equation. Various special cases including that of a crack terminating at the cylinder-reinforcement interface are investigated and numerical examples are given. Results indicate that in the case of the crack touching the interface the crack surface displacement derivative is finite and consequently the stress state around the corresponding crack tip is bounded; and generally, for realistic values of the stiffness parameter, the effect of the reinforcement is not very significant. Book Stress Intensity Factors for Internally Pressurized Thick Wall Cylinders

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors for Internally Pressurized Thick Wall Cylinders written by JH. Underwood and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected stress intensity factor solutions from the literature are related to the problem of internally pressurized thick-wall cylinders with straight-front and curved-front cracks. The recent K solutions of Bowie and Freese and Rice and Levy are combined in an estimate of the K solution for a pressurized cylinder with a semielliptical crack originating along the inner wall. The estimate of K is compared with the available experimental and analytical K data for shallow cracks.

Book excerpt: Selected stress intensity factor solutions from the literature are related to the problem of internally pressurized thick-wall cylinders with straight-front and curved-front cracks. The recent K solutions of Bowie + Freese and Rice + Levy are combined in an estimate of the K solution for a pressurized cylinder with a semielliptical crack originating along the inner wall. The estimate of K is compared with the available experimental and analytical K data for shallow cracks. The estimated K solution is modified to account for various complex loadings in pressurized cylinders. Included are modifications to describe lack of pressure on the crack surfaces in pressurized cylinders, residual stress in the wall of pressurized cylinders, a combination of an unpressurized crack and residual stress in the wall. The effect of cylic pressure loading on K is also discussed in relation to Throop's work on fatigue of pressurized cylinders. (Author).

Book Stress Intensity Factors for a Pressurized Thick Wall Cylinder with a Part Through Circular Surface Flaw Compliance Calibration and Collocation Method

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors for a Pressurized Thick Wall Cylinder with a Part Through Circular Surface Flaw Compliance Calibration and Collocation Method written by M. A. Hussain and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The K calibration at the deepest point of a circular surface flaw in an internally pressurized thick-walled cylinder has been determined by a compliance test as well as a three-dimensional collocation method. Compliance is defined as the change in the internal volume of a cylinder divided by an applied hydrostatic pressure instead of the usual elongation/load definition. It is shown, using the linear theory of elasticity that the derivative with respect to the crack depth of internal and external volume changes are identical. This permits the use of external strain measurements to compute the stress intensity factors. Periodic cubic splines are used to interpolate/approximate the strain data as well as to compute external volume change as a function of crack depth. The results agree very well with theoretical results obtained by the three- dimensional collocation method.

Book A Functional Stress Intensity Approach to Multiply Cracked Partially Autofrettaged Cylinders

Download or read book A Functional Stress Intensity Approach to Multiply Cracked Partially Autofrettaged Cylinders written by S. L. Pu and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The functional stress intensity approach is presented for a partially autofrettaged, thick-walled cylinder. This approach is a combination of a series of methods developed for the computation of stress intensity factors for multiple-radial cracks emanating from the inner or the outer surface of a hollow cylinder. The numerical method is mainly based on the finite element method using 12-node quadrilateral, isoparametric elements with singular elements around a crack tip. The difficulty due to the presence of initial stresses in the finite element method is obviated by the method of thermal simulation which replaces the residual stresses existing in an autofrettaged cylinder by an active thermal load. The weight function method is incorporated to reduce the repeated computations of stress intensity factors of the same geometrical configuration subjected to various external loads and residual stresses. The functional stress intensity factor is introduced to overcome the difficulty in seeking the weight function itself. Numerical results of functional stress intensity factors are given for multiple cracks radiating from the bore or from the outer surface of a cylinder having an external diameter twice that of an internal diameter. A linear superposition of these results gives the resultant stress intensity factor of a cracked geometry subjected to combined external loads and initial stresses. It is highly possible to extend the method outlined in this report for elastic-perfectly plastic material to strain-hardening materials.

Book Experimental evaluation of stress concentration and intensity factors

Download or read book Experimental evaluation of stress concentration and intensity factors written by George C. Sih and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments on fracture of materials are made for various purposes. Of primary importance are those through which criteria predicting material failure by deformation and/or fracture are investigated. Since the demands of engineering application always precede the development of theories, there is another kind of experiment where conditions under which a particular material can fail are simulated as closely as possible to the operational situation but in a simplified and standardized form. In this way, many of the parameters corresponding to fracture such as toughness, Charpy values, crack opening distance (COD), etc. are measured. Obviously, a sound knowledge of the physical theories governing material failure is necessary as the quantity of interest can seldom be evaluated in a direct manner. Critical stress intensity factors and critical energy release rates are examples. Standard test of materials should be distinguished from basic experi ments. They are performed to provide routine information on materials responding to certain conditions of loading or environment. The tension test with or without a crack is among one of the most widely used tests. Because they affect the results, with size and shape of the specimen, the rate of loading, temperature and crack configuration are standardized to enable comparison and reproducibility of results. The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) provides a great deal of information on recommended procedures and methods of testing. The objective is to standardize specifications for materials and definition of technical terms.
