Book Stress Intensity Factors for Internally Pressurized Thick Wall Cylinders

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors for Internally Pressurized Thick Wall Cylinders written by John H. Underwood and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected stress intensity factor solutions from the literature are related to the problem of internally pressurized thick-wall cylinders with straight-front and curved-front cracks. The recent K solutions of Bowie + Freese and Rice + Levy are combined in an estimate of the K solution for a pressurized cylinder with a semielliptical crack originating along the inner wall. The estimate of K is compared with the available experimental and analytical K data for shallow cracks. The estimated K solution is modified to account for various complex loadings in pressurized cylinders. Included are modifications to describe lack of pressure on the crack surfaces in pressurized cylinders, residual stress in the wall of pressurized cylinders, a combination of an unpressurized crack and residual stress in the wall. The effect of cylic pressure loading on K is also discussed in relation to Throop's work on fatigue of pressurized cylinders. (Author).

Book Stress Intensity Factors for a Pressurized Thick Wall Cylinder with a Part Through Circular Surface Flaw Compliance Calibration and Collocation Method

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors for a Pressurized Thick Wall Cylinder with a Part Through Circular Surface Flaw Compliance Calibration and Collocation Method written by M. A. Hussain and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The K calibration at the deepest point of a circular surface flaw in an internally pressurized thick-walled cylinder has been determined by a compliance test as well as a three-dimensional collocation method. Compliance is defined as the change in the internal volume of a cylinder divided by an applied hydrostatic pressure instead of the usual elongation/load definition. It is shown, using the linear theory of elasticity that the derivative with respect to the crack depth of internal and external volume changes are identical. This permits the use of external strain measurements to compute the stress intensity factors. Periodic cubic splines are used to interpolate/approximate the strain data as well as to compute external volume change as a function of crack depth. The results agree very well with theoretical results obtained by the three- dimensional collocation method.

Book Stress Intensity Factors for Radial Cracks in a Partially Autofrettaged Thick Wall Cylinder

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors for Radial Cracks in a Partially Autofrettaged Thick Wall Cylinder written by s L. Pu and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a finite element method and thermal simulation, stress intensity factors are determined for a uniform array of equal depth radial cracks emanating from the internal boundary of a pressurized, autofrettaged thick-wall cylinder. Computations of the stress intensity factors by methods of load relief and weight function are also examined. The combination of finite elements and weight functions is found very effective and is used in this report for multiple-radial cracks in a partially autofrettaged tube. Extensive numerical results are presented for a cylinder having an external diameter twice that of the internal diameter. It is shown that the autofrettaged tube with two diametrically opposed cracks remains, in general, the weakest configuration. For more than two cracks, the higher the number of cracks is, the smaller the stress intensity factor will be. (Author).

Book Stress Intensity Factors in a Reinforced Thick Walled Cylinder

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors in a Reinforced Thick Walled Cylinder written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An elastic thick-walled cylinder containing a radial crack is considered. It is assumed that the cylinder is reinforced by an elastic membrane on its inner surface. The model is intended to simulate pressure vessels with cladding. The formulation of the problem is reduced to a singular integral equation. Various special cases including that of a crack terminating at the cylinder-reinforcement interface are investigated and numerical examples are given. Results indicate that in the case of the crack touching the interface the crack surface displacement derivative is finite and consequently the stress state around the corresponding crack tip is bounded; and generally, for realistic values of the stiffness parameter, the effect of the reinforcement is not very significant. Book Weight Functions and Stress Intensity Factor Solutions

Download or read book Weight Functions and Stress Intensity Factor Solutions written by Xue-Ren Wu and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1991 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture mechanics is an indispensible tool in the design and safe operation of damage tolerant structures. One of the essential elements in fracture mechanics based analysis is the stress intensity factor. This book provides a powerful theoretical background to the weight function method in fracture mechanics and numerous stress intensity factors. Part I gives a theoretical background and overview of the weight function method. Part II provides further details of the weight functions for various geometries and a large number of stress intensity factor solutions. Part II deals with the determination of crack opening displacements, Dugdale model solutions and crack opening areas.
