Book Stress Intensity Factors for Corner Cracks in Rectangular Bars

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors for Corner Cracks in Rectangular Bars written by JC. Newman and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents stress-intensity factors for a wide range of quarter-elliptical corner cracks in rectangular bars. Cracked configurations were subjected to remote tension, in-plane bending, or out-of-plane bending. The ratio of crack depth to crack length ranged from 0.2 to 2; the ratio of crack depth to specimen thickness ranged from 0.2 to 0.8; and the ratio of crack length to specimen width ranged from 0.04 to 0.8. The configurations analyzed varied from a square bar to a very wide plate. These particular crack configurations were chosen to cover the range of shapes and sizes that have been observed to grow in experiments conducted on rectangular bars. The stress-intensity factors were calculated by a three-dimensional finite-element method. Finite-element models employed singularity elements along the crack front and linear-strain elements elsewhere. The models had about 7000 degrees of freedom. Stress-intensity factors were calculated using a nodal-force method.

Book Stress Intensity Factors for Surface Cracks in Bending

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors for Surface Cracks in Bending written by AF. Grandt and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture mechanics solutions applicable to surface cracked plates in bending are studied. The flawed plate is modeled as a two-dimensional beam containing a spring to find the stress intensity factor at the point of intersection of a semielliptical surface crack with the free boundary. Results are given for cracks of various shapes and sizes. These findings, along with previous analytical solutions obtained from the literature, are then compared with experimental data. Since it is difficult to measure surface cracks in metals, polymethylmethacrylate, a transparent polymer, was selected for the test material. First, the relation between fatigue crack growth rate and range in stress intensity is calibrated for polymethylmethacrylate. Measured fatigue crack growth rates for surface flaws in bending are then used to calculate experimental values for the stress intensity factor which are compared with theory.

Book Stress Intensity Factors for Single Edge Crack Solid and Hollow Round Bars Loaded in Tension

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors for Single Edge Crack Solid and Hollow Round Bars Loaded in Tension written by AJ. Bush and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dimensionless stress intensity factors were determined for single-edge-crack solid and hollow round bars loaded in tension. These factors were calculated from experimental compliance (inverse slope of load-displacement curve) measurements made over a range of dimensionless crack depths (lengths) from 0.05 to 0.65. The tests were made with 76-mm (3-in.) diameter solid and hollow round bars notched on one side and loaded in axial tension. The hollow bar had an inner to outer diameter ratio of 0.33. A comparison was made with data in the literature for rectangular bars; for a crack depth to diameter ratio of 0.0001 the dimensionless stress intensity factor for a solid round bar is 0.55 compared with 2.0 for a rectangular bar.

Book A Review and Assessment of the Stress Intensity Factors for Surface Cracks

Download or read book A Review and Assessment of the Stress Intensity Factors for Surface Cracks written by JC. Newman and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stress-intensity factor solutions proposed for a surface crack in a finite plate subjected to uniform tension are reviewed. Fourteen different solutions for the stress-intensity factors are compared. These solutions have been obtained over the past 16 years using approximate analytical methods, experimental methods, and engineering estimates.
