Book excerpt: The objective of the present investigation is to determine the mode I stress-intensity factors along two symmetric surface cracks emanating from a centrally located hole in a rectangular plate (the so-called Round Robin Problem) using the domain integral method. In order to validate the present three-dimensional domain integral implementation, two comparisons were made with benchmark solutions. We first considered the problem of an elliptical crack embedded in a rectangular plate. For plate dimensions much greater than the largest characteristic dimension of the elliptical crack, we compared the present finite element results with the solution of Irwin (1962) for an elliptical crack embedded in an infinitely extended solid. Next, we considered the problem of a quarter-elliptical comer crack in a rectangular, plate and compared the results with those of Newman and Raju (1983). Excellent agreement was obtained for both benchmark comparisons.

Book excerpt: Small cracks developing from rivet holes in lap joints of fuselage structure have been an issue of concern over the past decade. Stress-intensity factor solutions required to assess the structural integrity of such configurations are lacking. To address this need, the domain integral method was used in this research to obtain the mode I, normalized stress-intensity factor distributions for cracks emanating from a centrally located countersunk rivet hole in a square plate subjected to remote tension. Particular attention was focused on short cracks with an elliptical shape that have not propagated through the thickness. For these short cracks, the normalized stress-intensity factor distribution depended on the shape and size of the crack. Analysis was also conducted on long through the thickness cracks with a straight front for which the normalized stress-intensity factors were uniform.
