Book Plates and shells with cracks

Download or read book Plates and shells with cracks written by George C. Sih and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume of a series on Mechanies of Fraeture deals with eraeks in plates and shelIs. It was noted in Volume 2 on three-dimensional eraek problems that additional free surfaees can lead to substantial mathematical complexities, often making the analysis unmanageable. The theory of plates and shelIs forms a part of the theory of elasticity in which eertain physieal assumptions are made on the basis that the distanee between two bounded surfaees, either fiat or eurved, is small in eomparison with the overall dimen sions of the body. In modern times, the broad and frequent applieations of plate- and shell-like struetural members have aeted as a stimulus to whieh engineers and researchers in the field of fracture meehanies have responded with a wide variety of solutions of teehnieal importanee. These eontributions are covered in this book so that the reader may gain an understanding of how analytieal treat me nt s ofplates and shells containing initial imperfeetions in the form of eraeks are earried out. The development of plate and shell theories has involved long standing controversy on the eonsisteney of omitting eertain small terms and at the same time retaining others of the same order of magnitude. This defieieney depends on the ratio of the plate or shell thiekness, h, to other eharaeteristie dimensions and eannot be eompletely resolved in view of the approximations inherent in the transverse dependence of the extensional and bending stresses.

Book Cracks and Fracture

Download or read book Cracks and Fracture written by K. Bertram Broberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-02-24 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cracks and Fracture consists of nine chapters in logical sequence. In two introductory chapters, physical processes in the vicinity of the crack edge are discussed and the fracture process is described. Chapter 3 develops general basic concepts and relations in crack mechanics, such as path independent integrals, stress intensity factors and energy flux into the crack edge region. Chapters 4-7 deal with elastostatic cracks, stationary or slowly moving elastic-plastic cracks, elastodynamic crack mechanics and elastoplastic aspects of fracture, including dynamic fracture mechanics. Appendices include general formulae, the basic theory of analytic functions, introduction to Laplace and Hankel transforms and description of certain basic relations, for instance for stress waves in solids. There is an extensive bibliography, containing references to both classical and recent work, and a comprehensive index. Book Crack Shapes and Stress Intensity Factors for Edge Cracked Specimens

Download or read book Crack Shapes and Stress Intensity Factors for Edge Cracked Specimens written by TW. Orange and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple stress intensity factor expression is given for a deep edge crack in a plate in tension. The shapes of cracks opened by tension or bending are approximated by conic sections and the conic section coefficients related to plate geometry by very simple empirical equations. The magnitude of the crack displacement is a function of applied load, plate geometry, and the elastic constants of the plate material. The shape of a loaded crack in a semi-infinite plate is, approximately, a portion of an ellipse whose semimajor axis is about three times the crack length. As the crack length (relative to the plate width) increases, the crack shape becomes parabolic, then hyperbolic, the acuity of the hyperbola increasing with the relative crack length.

Book Small crack Test Methods

Book Thermoelastic Fracture Mechanics

Download or read book Thermoelastic Fracture Mechanics written by Vera Petrova and published by Materials Research Forum LLC. This book was released on 2024-02-10 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with the thermal and mechanical fracture of functionally graded materials on homogeneous substrate (FGM/H) structures. Emphasis is placed on multiple crack interactions. FGMs have a wide range of engineering applications; especially in thermal barrier coatings. Potentially desirable thermal and mechanical properties of functionally graded coatings (FGCs) are analyzed as well as available real material combinations, e.g. (ceramic/metal)/metal. Keywords: Thermal Fracture, Mechanical Fracture, Functionally Graded/Homogeneous Bimaterial, Thermo-Mechanical Loading, Mathematical Modelling, Thermal Stress Intensity, Fracture Criteria, Crack Closure, Systems of Cracks, Edge Cracks, Internal Cracks, Cracks Imitating a Curved Interface, Multiple Cracks Interaction, Thermal Barrier Coating, Thermal Fracture Resistance.

Book Small Fatigue Cracks

Download or read book Small Fatigue Cracks written by Engineering Foundation (U.S.). International Conference and published by Elsevier Science. This book was released on 1999 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the fully peer-reviewed papers presented at the Third Engineering Foundation Conference on Small Fatigue Cracks, held under the chairmanship of K.S. Ravichandran and Y. Murakami during December 6-11, 1998, at the Turtle Bay Hilton, Oahu, Hawaii. This book presents a state-of-the-art description of the mechanics, mechanisms and applications of small fatigue cracks by most of the world's leading experts in this field. Topics ranging from the mechanisms of crack initiation, small crack behavior in metallic, intermetallic, ceramic and composite materials, experimental measurement, mechanistic and theoretical models, to the role of small cracks in fretting fatigue and the application of small crack results to the aging aircraft and high-cycle fatigue problems, are covered.

Book Some Basic Problems of the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity

Download or read book Some Basic Problems of the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity written by N.I. Muskhelishvili and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1977-04-30 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TO THE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. In preparing this translation, I have taken the liberty of including footnotes in the main text or inserting them in small type at the appropriate places. I have also corrected minor misprints without special mention .. The Chapters and Sections of the original text have been called Parts and Chapters respectively, where the latter have been numbered consecutively. The subject index was not contained in the Russian original and the authors' index represents an extension of the original list of references. In this way the reader should be able to find quickly the pages on which anyone reference is discussed. The transliteration problem has been overcome by printing the names of Russian authors and journals also in Russian type. While preparing this translation in the first place for my own informa tion, the knowledge that it would also become accessible to a large circle of readers has made the effort doubly worthwhile. I feel sure that the reader will share with me in my admiration for the simplicity and lucidity of presentation.

Book The Life of Cracks

Download or read book The Life of Cracks written by Srečko Glodež and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people find the concept of fracture and damage mechanics to be somewhat problematic, mainly because, until recently, close attention in mechanics was focused especially on the strength and resistance of materials. In this sense, to speak of fracture is as uncomfortable for some as it is to speak of a deadly disease. In confronting and preventing a fatal disease, one must understand its complexity, symptoms, and behavior; by the same token, in securing the strength of an engineering structure, one must understand the reasons and type of its potential failure. This book will provide knowledge and insights on this matter to its readers.
