Book Stress Distribution in a Stiffened Circular Cylindrical Shell with a Circular Cutout Under Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book Stress Distribution in a Stiffened Circular Cylindrical Shell with a Circular Cutout Under Hydrostatic Pressure written by M. M. Stanisic and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report covers the theoretical analysis of a cylindrical shell with a circular cutout and stiffened internally with equally spaced rings. The shell is considered to be infinitely long, capped at the ends and subjected to internal pressure. The exact solution of the partial differential equations of Donnell's and Flugge's theories of thin cylindrical shells is obtained in the form of an infinite series. Fourier expansions and the method of least square error are employed to satisfy the boundary conditions. Typical numerical results for the case of two ring stiffeners are presented at the end of the report. (Author).

Book Elastic Stress Analysis in the End Bays of Stiffened Circular Cylindrical Shells Under External Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book Elastic Stress Analysis in the End Bays of Stiffened Circular Cylindrical Shells Under External Hydrostatic Pressure written by Oles Lomacky and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method of elastic stress analysis for ring-stiffened circular cylindrical shells with linearly varying tapered insert at the deep frame is presented. The analysis is based on Fourier series expansion and an analogy to beam-columns on elastic foundation. In addition, the experimental data obtained from machined models are in good agreement with the theoretical results. (Author).

Book Computations for Stress and Stress Concentration in a Circular Cylindrical Shell with Circular Cutout

Download or read book Computations for Stress and Stress Concentration in a Circular Cylindrical Shell with Circular Cutout written by S. L. KOH and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a recent report by Naghdi and Eringen (G.T.C. Technical Report No. 3-2, 'Stress Analysis of a Circular Cylindrical Shell with Circular Cutout, ' January 1963) (AD-640 558), a theoretical analysis of an infinitely long circular cylindrical shell with a circular cutout is presented. Specific results are obtained for three particular cases in which the shell is subjected to: Case I.A uniformly distributed bending moment around the edge of the cutout. (Pending Moment Case) Case II. A uniform longitudinal tensils load with the edge of the cutout stress-free. (Extension Case) Case III. A uniform internal pressure with a uniform transverse shear at the edge of the cutout. (Internal Pressure Case) The analytical results of the cited Technical Report 3-2 are used in the detailed calculations undertaken for the present report. The state of stress for each of the three cases above is determined for a variety of cylindrical shells having different material and geometry properties. Stress concentration factors are also calculated for Cases II and III. The present report includes a summary of significant results presented in Technical Report 3-2. To avoid excessive duplication, only pertinent expressions are repeated here, except those which are too lengthy to reproduce. Therefore, for these long expressions, reference has to be made to Technical Report 3-2. In addition there is presented a discussion on stress concentration for a combined state of stress not included in Technical Report 3-2. The calculated numerical results are presented and discussed for each of the three cases described above. The application of these data are indicated.

Book Stress Concentration in a Capped Circular Cylindrical Shell with Circular Cutout

Download or read book Stress Concentration in a Capped Circular Cylindrical Shell with Circular Cutout written by C. C. Thiel and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is twofold: (1) To determine stress concentration factors associated with a capped infinite circular cylinder with a circular cutout under internal pressure loading and a constant shear distributed on the edge of the cutout. (See Section IV) This corresponds to a cylindrical pressure vessel with an inlet. (2) To investigate the effect of Poisson's ratio on the stress concentration factor in the three cases: (Case I) A uniformly distributed bending moment around the edge of the cutout (Bending Moment Case) (Case II) A uniform longitudinal tensile load with the edge of the cutout stress-free (Extension Case) (Case III) A uniform internal pressure with a uniform transverse shear at the edge of the cutout (Internal Pressure Case). The interest in studying the Poisson ratio effect is motivated by the fact that the two experimental techniques of stress determination, namely resistance strain gauge measurements on steels and photoelastic measurements on plastics, make use of test materials of very different Poisson's ratio, namely nu = 0.30 and nu = 0.49 respectively. In both experimental and practical application, the greatest interest lies in cylindrical pressure vessels.

Book Stress and Displacement Analysis of a Clamped Noncircular Cylindrical Shell Under Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book Stress and Displacement Analysis of a Clamped Noncircular Cylindrical Shell Under Hydrostatic Pressure written by William P. Vafakos and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deflections and stresses are analyzed for a noncircular cylindrical shell of uniform wall thickness under hydrostatic load and with its edges clamped in such a fashion that the end sections remain plane and normal to the axis. By assuming a Fourier series in the closed circumferential direction and using the principle of the minimum of the total potential, the partial differential equations of equili rium are replaced by a set of ordinary differential equa ions. The displacements obtained by solving these equations are used to obtain the stresses. The results are then compared with those obtained by 2 simple approximate solutions for circular cylindrical shells. Numerical results are obtained for an oval shell with a circumference-to-wall thickness ratio of 576, a circumference-to-axial length ratio of 24, and a major-to-minor axis ratio of 1.10. The maximum radial displacement occurs at points on the shell determined by the intersection of the midlength cross section with the generators representing the loci of least curvature. The maximum stress is an axial stress due principally to bending, and occurs at those points of the clamped edges having the least curvature.

Book Stresses in Pressurized Cylindrical Shell with Circular Cutout

Download or read book Stresses in Pressurized Cylindrical Shell with Circular Cutout written by L. V. Kline and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By use of a perturbation technique, the deflections and stresses in a circular cylindrical shell with a circular cutout, subject to internal pressure are determined. A computational procedure is set up to determine the stress concentration at the edge of the hole and the stresses existing at any point in the shell. In article 2 are given the general outline of the theoretical analysis, the pertinent conclusions reached, and the results of a sample calculation. The remainder of the report is devoted to the details of the theoretical work and of the sample calculation. (Author).
