Book Stress Concentrations in Filament stiffened Sheets of Finite Length

Download or read book Stress Concentrations in Filament stiffened Sheets of Finite Length written by W. B. Fichter and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple model of filamentary composite material is employed to investigate stress concentrations in a filament-stiffened sheet of finite length. The model is composed of a single layer of parallel, tension-carrying filaments embedded in a shear-carrying matrix. The sheet is of finite length in the filament direction and of infinite length normal to the filament direction. Filament stress-concentration factors are calculated as functions of the number of broken filaments and a length-stiffness parameter for the cases of uniform normal edge load and uniform normal edge displacement. In the uniform-edge-load case, the stress-concentration factors are found to increase with decreasing filament length. The opposite effect is noted in the uniform-edge-displacement case where, in addition, the stress-concentration factor is found to have an upper limit which is fixed by the value of the length-stiffness parameter.

Book Handbook of Composite Reinforcements

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive single volume handbook covers every aspect of reinforcement science, from hands-on subjects, such as manual 'lay-up' processing, to theoretical discussions concerning rheology and modeling. Taken from the recently published six volume International Encyclopedia of Composites, this reference volume offers scholarly and practical knowledge of distinguished industry-experts, academics, and government researchers in one accessible and informative handbook. Fibers, processes, and composite reinforcement types, as well as relevant miscellaneous subjects such as property relationships, manufacturing, hybrid reinforcements, and modeling are given detailed treatment. Engineers, materials scientists, and technologists will find the Composite Reinforcement Handbook an invaluable tool.

Book A Theory and Applications of Filamentary Structures

Download or read book A Theory and Applications of Filamentary Structures written by Hans U. Schuerch and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory of filamentary structures consisting of monotropic membranes is presented. Applications to isotensoid pressure vessels with rotational symmetry demonstrate the use of the theory. Particular attention is given to applications of filamentary design of variable-geometry expandable structures. An extension of the theory to pressurized-filamentary structures subject to centrifugal loading and the special case of meridional winding patterns are presented in two Appendices. Physical interpretation of the resulting shapes and winding patterns leads to a discussion of the morphology of filament-wound pressure vessels. Experimental data, obtained from filament-wound toroidal pressure vessels, confirm the validity of the theory and demonstrate application of the analytical design technique for filamentary structures.

Book Composite Structures 3

Download or read book Composite Structures 3 written by I.H. Marshall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the Third International Conference on Composite Structures (ICCS/3) held at Paisley College of Technology, Paisley, Scotland, in September 1985. The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College of Technology. It was co sponsored by the Scottish Development Agency, the National Engineering Laboratory, the USAF European Office of Aerospace Research and Development, and the US Army Research, Development and Standard isation Group-UK. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful First and Second International Conferences on Composite Structures (ICCS/l and ICCS/2) held at Paisley in 1981 and 1983, respectively. To label composites as rather specialised, sophisticated, space-age structural materials would be to underestimate greatly their wider industrial potential. It is unquestionably true that they will play an increasingly dominant, if not decisive, role in aerospace engineering. Indeed a future aircraft industry without composites as the prime structural materials is inconceivable. However, in an energy-conscious world the high specific weights and stiffnesses of composites make them an attractive proposition in every sphere of transportation engineering. This fact is soundly underlined in one of the Plenary papers contained herein and in one of the sessions devoted to this subject. I t would also be a considerable mistake to interpret composites as simply lightweight alternatives to conventional metallic structural materials.

Book Structure Cellular Synthesis and Assembly of Biopolymers

Download or read book Structure Cellular Synthesis and Assembly of Biopolymers written by Steven T. Case and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many naturally occurring biopolymers have unique structures and unique physical or mechanical properties. The understan- ding of the moleclar basisof these biomolecules, their syn- thesis, assembly and processing is a prerequisit for any ap- plication to the design of novel biomolecular materials. Se- veral classes of biopolymers are sampled in depth in this volume, such as nanolaminated ceramics, adhesive proteins, eggshellproteins, protein fibres and silk which are synthe- sized by a variety of organisms (mulluscs, parasitic trema- todes, fish and insects). The reader will be introduced to the biological systems to understand Nature's use of each biopolymer and the highly differentiated cells responsible for their synthesis. Corresponding to the variety of organ- isms and possible applications of biopolymers, the combined expertise of interdisciplinary teams of scientists - such as the authors of this volume - have the greatestopportunity to decipher and exploit Nature's skill in biopolymer engi- neering.

Book Mechanics of Composite Materials

Download or read book Mechanics of Composite Materials written by Zvi Hashin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Composite Materials: Recent Advances covers the proceedings of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) Symposium on Mechanics of Composite Materials. The book reviews papers that emphasize fundamental mechanics, developments, and unresolved problems of the field. The text covers topics such as mechanical properties of composite materials; influence of microstructure on the thermoplastics and transport properties of particulate and short-fiber composites; and further applications of the systematic theory of materials with disordered constitution. The selection also explains the curved thermal crack growth in the interface of a unidirectional carbon-aluminum composite and energy release rates of various microcracks in short-fiber composites. The book will be of great interest to researchers and professionals whose line of work requires the understanding of the mechanics of composite materials.
