Download or read book Strengthening the Arts in California Schools written by California. State Department of Education and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arts education is a fundamental obligation of the public schools. Students grow in unique and critical ways by experiencing the arts through practice. The study of the heritage of the arts in their intellectual, critical, and aesthetic dimensions enhances student perspectives. Mankind's artistic achievements are the heritage of every child and an education system is obliged to transmit that heritage from generation to generation. This report presents the recommendations of California's 24 member Arts Education Advisory Committee on ways to improve arts education in the state's public schools. Ten recommendations are made in the areas of: (1) policy; (2) curriculum; (3) staff development; (4) resources; (5) assessment; (6) collaboration; (7) teacher training; (8) leadership; (9) research; and (10) advocacy. An appendix containing a sample listing of arts programs available to California schools is included. (DB)

Book Improving Arts Education Partnerships

Download or read book Improving Arts Education Partnerships written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arts education in the nation's public schools is facing challenges despite strong public support and growing evidence of its wide-ranging benefits. Educational initiatives such as the federal No Child Left Behind Act do not include accountability measures for arts education. This has prompted schools to shift instructional time and resources from the arts to other subjects. A recent survey of 82 school districts in Los Angeles County revealed that most districts dedicated less than 1 percent of their budget to arts education. One of the strategies adopted by schools to improve arts education is to tap the expertise of local community arts organizations. In 1999, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) approved a 10-year, multi-million-dollar program in arts education in four major disciplines -- dance, music, theater, and visual arts -- for all students in kindergarten through grade 12. A core component of the plan is to build partnerships with community arts organizations to develop and provide programs to enhance the study of the arts. The California Arts Council asked the RAND Corporation to examine these partnerships. Unlike recent research that has focused on successful joint ventures, RAND researchers selected a sample of schools and arts organizations to portray how arts partnerships actually function in a large urban school district. The researchers interviewed the following groups: (1) principals and teachers from a stratified random sample of 11 elementary schools participating in an LAUSD arts education program, (2) arts advisors from 10 of 11 local districts who are working to help implement the plan, and (3) directors of 34 local arts organizations providing arts education programming to schools. Participants were asked about their arts partnership goals and interactions and the challenges to and facilitators of the partnerships.

Book Arts Education in a Time of Crisis

Download or read book Arts Education in a Time of Crisis written by Davida Persaud and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated a monumental transformation in public education as millions of K-12th grade students in the United States transitioned to online learning. I served as Programs Manager at an arts non-profit in Los Angeles during the height of the pandemic. My early conversations with school principals, classroom teachers, and colleagues in the arts illuminated the key question that guided my research: What happens to arts education during a time of crisis? My research documents the changes and adaptations of K-12 arts education programs in Los Angeles between 2020 and 2022, with a key focus on the development of virtual arts curricula during a precarious public health crisis. COVID-19 marks a critical moment in a longer history of arts education that has been shaped by past crises as well as complex social, political, and economic frameworks. My research is positioned within the vast context of K-12 arts education in Los Angeles with the intention of understanding how this time of crisis interfaces with ongoing challenges of access and equity. I offer insights on the impact of COVID-19 on K-12 arts education in Los Angeles through three case studies: 1) The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Itinerant Arts Programs; 2) The Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) Arts Education Program; and 3) The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) Mobile School Program. Alongside discussions on funding structures and arts pedagogy, I begin to identify strategies that could support LAUSD and public school systems across the United States in delivering student-centered arts education during future crises. The implications of this research extend beyond COVID-19 and indicate a pathway toward strengthening the infrastructure of arts education to empower the next generations of students during and beyond times of crisis.
