A total of 16 beam spec imens were tested. Each spec imen was first subjected to an amplitude fatigue loading at a constant load range varying between Pmin {Dead load) and Pmax (Dead load + excessive Live load) equal about 30* and 80* of the calculated nominal flexural resistance respectively. The spec imens were then externally prestressed while loaded with Pmin and subjected to monotonically increasing load to failure. Due to external prestressing, the induced fatigue deflections of the specimens were reduced by up to 75*, and the nominal flexural strengths were increased by up to 146*. External tendons with harped profile were relatively more effective in increasing the flexural strength as compared to tendons with straight horizontal profile. The stress ranges and mean stress levels in the Internal tension reinforcement were reduced considerably which imply a significant improvement in the fatigue life of the strengthened spec imens. The stress in the external prestressing steel at nominal flexural strength can be safely predicted using ACI code Eq. 18-4 proposed for internal unbonded tendons. Also, with slight modification to Eq. 18-3 of the ACI Building code to account for external tendons, the stress in the internal prestressing steel and the nominal flexural strength of concrete members strengthened using additional external tendons can be predicted using ACI code 318-89 procedure with reasonable accuracy.
