Book The Politics Industry

Download or read book The Politics Industry written by Katherine M. Gehl and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading political innovation activist Katherine Gehl and world-renowned business strategist Michael Porter bring fresh perspective, deep scholarship, and a real and actionable solution, Final Five Voting, to the grand challenge of our broken political and democratic system. Final Five Voting has already been adopted in Alaska and is being advanced in states across the country. The truth is, the American political system is working exactly how it is designed to work, and it isn't designed or optimized today to work for us—for ordinary citizens. Most people believe that our political system is a public institution with high-minded principles and impartial rules derived from the Constitution. In reality, it has become a private industry dominated by a textbook duopoly—the Democrats and the Republicans—and plagued and perverted by unhealthy competition between the players. Tragically, it has therefore become incapable of delivering solutions to America's key economic and social challenges. In fact, there's virtually no connection between our political leaders solving problems and getting reelected. In The Politics Industry, business leader and path-breaking political innovator Katherine Gehl and world-renowned business strategist Michael Porter take a radical new approach. They ingeniously apply the tools of business analysis—and Porter's distinctive Five Forces framework—to show how the political system functions just as every other competitive industry does, and how the duopoly has led to the devastating outcomes we see today. Using this competition lens, Gehl and Porter identify the most powerful lever for change—a strategy comprised of a clear set of choices in two key areas: how our elections work and how we make our laws. Their bracing assessment and practical recommendations cut through the endless debate about various proposed fixes, such as term limits and campaign finance reform. The result: true political innovation. The Politics Industry is an original and completely nonpartisan guide that will open your eyes to the true dynamics and profound challenges of the American political system and provide real solutions for reshaping the system for the benefit of all. THE INSTITUTE FOR POLITICAL INNOVATION The authors will donate all royalties from the sale of this book to the Institute for Political Innovation.

Book STRENGTHENING US EXPORT COMPET

Download or read book STRENGTHENING US EXPORT COMPET written by United States Congress and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-14 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strengthening U. S. Export Competitiveness, Industry Views: Hearing Before the Subcommittee on International Economic Policy and Trade Committee on International Relations, House of Representatives, One Hundred Fourth Congress, First Session; November 8, 1995 Mr. Chairman, I would just like to make a few points and then I will be interested to hear what the witnesses have to say. In leading up to this from our conversation in the back room a few moments ago, I do not believe exports, in and of themselves, are the holly grail. I think that a lot of people have gotten their values screwed up in this whole debate. Exports can be a very positive thing. It can be a very positive thing for our economy, but at some levels, exports, while positive toward the economy, can be negative toward other elements of our society. No one would have, for example, suggested that we build Hitler's freeways for him before World War II and that that would have made Hitler any less of a Nazi. Even though building freeways for Hitler is infrastructure, it would have permitted him to have spent more money on Stukas. I happen to believe in free trade between free people. I have no problems when free peoples are trading with one another in a very open way and making profit from one another. Book The Contest for Innovation

Download or read book The Contest for Innovation written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has entered an era of long-term competition with revisionist powers. A key aspect of this competition will revolve around a contest for technological superiority waged between the national innovation bases of the respective competitors. The outcome of this competition will determine not just American national security but also how the nations of the world interact—and whether a free and open political and economic system will remain the foundation of those interactions.Unfortunately, the technological development relevant to national security is no longer exclusively or even primarily in the control of the Department of Defense (DOD) and its prime contractors. In the past, cutting-edge technology was usually developed by the government sector for military use and then migrated into the civilian sector. Today, the direction of innovation has reversed. How do we transform, organize, sustain, and leverage our national security technology and innovation community to prevail in a long-term competition against an authoritarian regime that has centralized, long-range national plans to dominate the critical dual-use technologies central to future economic and military competitiveness?
