Book Strength Tests and Design Methods for Cold formed Channel Columns Undergoing Distortional Buckling

Download or read book Strength Tests and Design Methods for Cold formed Channel Columns Undergoing Distortional Buckling written by Sammy Chia Wo Lau and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The columns of industrial steel storage rack structures are generally cold-formed open sections manufactured either by roll-forming or brake-pressing. The commonly used sections are thin-walled lipped channels whose width and depth are approximately equal. Depending on the length of the columns and the restraints provided by pallet beams and bracing, these types of sections may fail in a mode of local, distortional or flexural-torsional buckling. In this report, the results of compression tests of thin-walled channel section columns formed by brake-pressing are described. A total of sixty-eight channel columns of different section geometries, thicknesses and steel grades were tested under uniform compression in a fix-ended condition. The length of the tested columns ranged from short length stub columns which failed mainly by inelastic local buckling, to intermediate length columns which failed by inelastic distortional buckling to long length columns which failed by either elastic or inelastic flexural-torsional buckling. Detailed measurements of the stress-strain characteristics of the material forming the sections are also described. Design methods to account for the inelastic behaviour in the distortional mode of buckling are proposed in the paper and compared with the test results. The test results are also compared with the recently revised Australian, American and European design rules.

Book Design of Channels Against Distortional Buckling

Download or read book Design of Channels Against Distortional Buckling written by Y. B. Kwon and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin-walled lip-stiffened channel columns composed of high strength steel may fail in a distortional mode involving movement of the lip stiffener perpendicular to the flange plate it supports. In this report, test results for a simple lipped channel section(CHl) and an intermediate stiffened channel section (CH2) of thickness of approximately 1.1 mm (0.043 in) and 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) steel and undergoing distortional or mixed local-distortional buckling failure are compared with different design methods. The design methods compared are Australian Standard AS1538, EC3 Part1/Annexe A, the ECCS Recommendations and the AISI Specification. In addition, new methods based on a modified Winter formula for effective width are presented and compared with the tests.

Book Stability of Perforated Cold Formed Steel Beam Columns

Download or read book Stability of Perforated Cold Formed Steel Beam Columns written by Trevor Oketch Rabare and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to examine the stability of perforated cold-formed steel members subjected to combined axial and bending loads. Preliminary design formulations of the Direct Strength Method in non-perforated cold-formed steel beamcolumn indicated that under combined actions, linear interaction assumption for predicting strength of cold-formed steel is conservative in comparison with direct-analysis prediction that considers stability and yielding of cold-formed steel beam-columns under the appropriate stress combinations. Perforated cold-formed steel members subjected to combined loading are commonly used in cold-formed steel framing industry and it is important to extend the beam-column stability examination to perforated members as well. Complete yielding and stability solutions under direct combined actions for perforated sections are established. These elastic buckling envelopes form the basis for formulating a preliminary Direct Strength Method and together with collapse analysis provide valuable analytical background in future experimental testing of perforated cold-formed steel beamcolumns.
