Book excerpt: Street photography is a form of storytelling that communicates the experience of everyday life and the vision of the artist via photos shot out in the world. Like photojournalism, nothing is staged, posed, or planned, and it doesn't rely on models or studio lights. "A lot of street photography is responding to life. It's when you see an interaction or a person in a certain space, and you want to record that," explains a photographer and professor. Since so much of the lighting, content, and opportunity in street photography is dependent on chance, street photography can be a challenging genre of photography. But those challenges ensure that street photos are always one of a kind. It aims to document and examine life, as it happens. This book takes you to a journey around the streets of Dublin, Ireland's historic capital city, as street photography are shot. Book Dubliners

  • Release : 2020-12-27
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 116 pages

Download or read book Dubliners written by Adolfo Escat and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-27 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear reader, This collection of 115 photographs depicts inhabitants of Dublin in all daily life activities. I took the photographs myself during my long stay living in the city and the county of Dublin, talking to Dubliners and walking tirelessly on the streets. You will notice three distinct areas in the book. The first one, the amiable face of Dublin, happy Dubliners going about their interests, practicing sport, shopping, walking on the street, working, etc.. The second part deals with the invisible face of Dublin, the suffering Dublin, for no collection of images of a city is complete without portraying the whole reality. The third part depicts Dubliners as they see themselves in art and other areas of life. This is why you will find pleasant images and unpleasant ones, even poignant. This is why you will find a picture of a little girl killed in a road accident. Relatives of those killed in road accidents in Ireland often erect tribute funerary remembrance monuments by the road, where their beloved ones passed away. This aspect is, perhaps, the most sinister aspect in the Irish culture, the cult of the car and the disrespect for life that authorities and car owners alike show for citizens walking on the streets. For even on parks frequented by the public, like Phoenix Park, display very few zebra-crossings so that pedestrians can cross the roads safely. Despite my admiration for some parts of the Irish culture, Ireland is a country where the cult for technology and speed have led many of its citizens and the authorities to forget the value of civility and of life. Ireland is littered with road funerary monuments everywhere, with crosses and photographs of the deceased. When will this killing for the sake of business and the interest of car owners and business van drivers end?, Why do most Irish not abide to civility rules when driving, almost always taking precedence over pedestrians, behaving like almighty gods at the wheel of killing machines?. Having lived and living in other European countries, like Belgium and Poland, I can all assure, that there are other ways of dealing with car traffic and that car and van and lorry drivers are a lot more careful with pedestrians.I think that the best tribute to give to the unfortunate killed on the roads and to the homeless is to include everybody in this collection of pictures. Ignoring was therefore not a choice. In this respect, this collection of photographs depicts the wide diversity of inhabitants of Dublin but it intends to be as well both an artistic and a social document of the city during the years 2017-2020.You will also find animals living in the city and county, on the streets, skies and beaches. They too are Dubliners if you think that, for example, dogs adopt or mimic the personalities of their owners and are, in a sense, the extension of the personalities of their owners. Animals also endure the harshness of daily life on the streets and they also enjoy life in Dublin, on its parks, for example. Finally, you will find here many excellent graffiti portraits embellishing the streets of Dublin. It is artistic in that I have tried to portray the subjects and objects here depicted following my aesthetic instincts. It is social because I have tried to select relevant social scenes. I tried to capture the moment, the feelings and the nature of the people and animals portrayed. You will judge by yourself if the enterprise reached a good port.I don't give any title to the photographs, as I usually do, so as not to influence your train of thoughts. You yourself will come to your own conclusions as to what the image means, if there is a second meaning at all. I hope, however, that you will appreciate the idiosyncrasy of some Dubliners that transpires from some of these pictures. I hope that you find this collection of pictures worth of your library. The author.
