Even if there appears to be a common cultural heritage between the two, youth culture is different from adult culture, and those differences will affect all aspects of the interaction. These cultural differences become even more pronounced when working with at-risk populations such as homeless, street-dependent youth who, in addition to all the other issues they face, have adapted to a culture of the streets.Street Culture is about understanding this culture and how it affects the behavior and thinking of youth who are living it. But it is not about the external “look” of the culture of the streets, which may change over time or from place to place. It is about the response to the environment exhibited by adolescents that underlies that culture. Because of this, and because much of the concepts are the result of adolescent thinking and behavior (as opposed to homeless thinking and behavior), much of the material has application even outside of the context of programming for and working with young people actually surviving on our streets. If you are challenged by youth behavior in any capacity, including parenting, you may recognize the challenges in these pages and find tips that will help you to become more effective with, and a better resource for, young people.

In comparison to the pioneering Chicago School's work on gangs in the 1920s we have moved away from a humanistic appraisal of and sensitivity toward the phenomenon and have allowed the gang to become a highly plastic folk devil outside of history. This pathologization of the gang has particularly negative consequences for democracy in an age of punishment, cruelty and coercive social control. This is the central thesis of David Brotherton’s new and highly contentious book on street gangs. Drawing on a wealth of highly acclaimed original research, Brotherton explores the socially layered practices of street gangs, including community movements, cultural projects and sites of social resistance. The book also critically reviews gang theory and the geographical trajectories of streets gangs from New York and Puerto Rico to Europe, the Caribbean and South America, as well as state-sponsored reactions and the enabling role of orthodox criminology. In opposition to the dominant gang discourses, Brotherton proposes the development of a critical studies approach to gangs and concludes by making a plea for researchers to engage the gang reflexively, paying attention to the contradictory agency of the gang and what gang members actually tell us. Through interviews the authors gained privileged entry into the lives of youth in Toronto and Halifax over a year-long period. Through rich qualitative prose, quantitative elaboration, and comic-book narratives, participants spoke of courage, fortitude, strength, adversity, and at times, simple bad luck. Ultimately this became a story of fragility, complexity, living “on the edge,” and the (re)-building of identity.

Book excerpt: "The Experience of Emerging Adulthood among Street-Involved Youth tells the story of young people who were street-involved from their early to mid-teens into their 20s, particularly their experiences of emerging adulthood while struggling towards young adulthood and independence. These youth experienced emerging and early adulthood earlier than other youth while living independently of guardians, detached from formal education, and working in the underground economy. After leaving their guardians they were choosing how to be different than their family, learning to cope with instability, enjoying and protecting their independence, and they experienced some satisfaction with their ability to manage. As one youth stated, "away from my family, I learned that I was not stupid." Their success was facilitated by harm-reduction services, like access to shelter and food, that gave them time to experiment with living independently and to practice being responsible for themselves and others. Later they begin to prefer non-street identities, and they began to think about their desires for the future; the distance between their current lives and those aspirations was the experience of feeling "in-between," and progress toward their aspirations was often complicated by past experiences of trauma, current experiences of exclusion, coping with substances, and the mismatch between their needs and available services"--
