Book Personal Ties Bed Stuy Brooklyn

Book excerpt: "Photographing strangers on the street is like having an epic novel read aloud to you, only it's real. You're connected. You're involved. And you carry every piece of it with you from then on."--Amy Touchette A resident of New York City since 1997, Amy Touchette started photographing people in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, soon after moving to the neighborhood in 2015. Perhaps best known for being the childhood home of rapper Jay-Z and the setting of Spike Lee's film Do the Right Thing, what struck Touchette most about Bed-Stuy was its strong sense of community and the relationships that underpin it. Using a Rolleiflex film camera, friends, family members, and couples often caught her eye. Knowing she was a stranger appealing for their time, Touchette tried to make the encounters as quick and easy as possible, making just two frames of each subject. Whether photographing in Hawaii, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, the American South, or in her own adopted neighborhood in Bed-Stuy, Touchette has always used photography to shine the light on others, a strong believer that eye contact is the gateway to empathy and the realization that we are all in this together. Although all of her projects stem from a personal endearment, these photographs, set in the streets she calls home, are especially personal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ties to the Streets' is a story loosely based on the life of its author, Omar Beasley. It gives true insight into the world of a wholesale drug dealer living in the 'fast lane', and the affects it has on his life. Main character, Cedric Carter, had just returned home from serving time in Federal prison, and just a short time later he was back in the game living that fast life and getting that fast money. But it all came with a price to pay, and this book will show you how that life began to separate his family, how friendships that once seemed unbreakable suddenly fell into a sewer of rats and betrayal. And most importantly, how that life affects himself as a man in the game. The blood, sweat, and tears trying to make it to the top, but the addiction to the lifestyle prevents him from ever getting there before it's too late.....

Book excerpt: Discover the story of a gentleman's most distinguished accessory, the necktie, with the inimitable Stephen Fry as your guide. In this utterly charming volume, Stephen Fry excavates his epic collection of neckties and shares the stories behind them. From the traditional "egg and bacon" colors of the Marylebone Cricket Club to the exuberant Dalmatian pattern of a 1980s Nicole Miller design, each tie tells a story. Interspersed amongst the collection are diagrams to aid in tying your own Half Windsor, Van Wijk, or Prince Albert Knot. The book expands on Fry's popular Instagram series, with additional, all-new content—including an essay about Fry's own necktie journey and a collection of snappy photos and illustrations of the ties themselves. This handsome little hardcover is more than an homage to a fashion accessory: it's an informative and witty tour of history, culture, art, and design. BELOVED AUTHOR: Stephen Fry is an icon in many domains, including humor, storytelling, and style. He is the ideal guide to the world of neckties, as knowledgeable as he is entertaining.
