Book Street Smart Safety for Women

Download or read book Street Smart Safety for Women written by Joy Farrow and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a book written by women for women, Street Smart Safety for Women offers tips on defensive living that will increase readers' reliance on the one thing that can protect them most: their safety intuition. Violence against women is a global health issue. The threats women face today are unparalleled and more dangerous than ever before. And, for the first time in history, the toxic cocktail of technology and social media has weaponized misogyny and virtualized violence against women. There’s an even more serious challenge that faces women today. Social conditioning—the way our systems of family life, education, employment, entertainment and pop culture, spirituality and religion influence us— leaves many of us ill-equipped to deal not only with this escalating surge of attacks, but also the unrelenting prevalence of sexual assault, domestic violence, and scams. Women have been culturally trained to discount one of their greatest protections – safety intuition. As women, it is so ingrained in us to attend to everyone else, including strangers on the street, before we listen to ourselves, that we have lost touch with our innate ability to often detect dangerous situations. As the result, we are left generally defenseless to recognize predators who manipulate our natural compassion, to our own detriment. This inability to listen to ourselves and be persuasion-proof directly affects our personal safety and data shows that attacks on women continue to escalate daily across the world, inside and outside of the home. Though everyone is talking about how women continue to be less safe, few offer solutions. Women are terrified and they are looking for answers. In Street Smart Safety for Women, retired Deputy Sheriff Joy Farrow and technologist Laura Frombach, herself a survivor of a violent household, draw on their experiences both personal and professional to provide those answers. Dedicated to educating women in personal safety and showing them a defensive living strategy and trusting in themselves can reduce their probability of becoming a victim of a crime. Chapter 1 – Design for Defensive Living Chapter 2 - Technology Terror Chapter 3 – Can You Recognize a Predator? Chapter 4 - Persuasion, Manipulation, or More? Chapter 5 - Dating Diligence Chapter 6 – What Do Victims of Domestic Abuse Have in Common with Korean War POWs? Chapter 7 - Financial Security is Key to Your Safety Chapter 8 – Tips from a Female Cop Chapter 9 - Shams, Scams and Cons Chapter 10 - Women and Weapons Chapter 11 - From Victim to Victor

What they do with that lucky break varies tremendously from individual to individual. Street smart people don't just sit around waiting for something to happen and fall into their laps—they create their lucky breaks. It's certainly not taught in school and formal education! Why is it so important to take advantage of these lucky breaks? Because... · Working hard isn't enough. · Networking isn't enough. · Diligence isn't enough. · Brilliant strategizing isn't enough. · Old school ties aren't enough. · Internal politicking isn't enough. · Working around the clock isn't enough. · Professional competence isn't enough. You need something more. You need to be street smart. And successful people will tell you how—right here in this book—and will explain some of the techniques they employed that brought them to the head of the class.

Book Street Smart

Download or read book Street Smart written by Gabriel Roth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poor health of today's roads--a subject close to the hearts of motorists, taxpayers, and government treasurers around the world--has resulted from faulty incentives that misdirect government decision-makers, according to the contributors to Street Smart. During the 1990s, bad government decision-making resulted in the U.S. Interstate Highway System growing by only one seventh the rate of traffic growth. The poor maintenance of existing roads is another concern. In cities around the world, highly political and wasteful government decision-making has led to excessive traffic congestion that has created long commutes, reduced safety, and caused loss of leisure time.Street Smart examines the privatization of roads in theory and in practice. The authors see at least four possible roles for private companies, beyond the well-known one of working under contract to design, build, or maintain governmentally provided roads. These include testing and licensing vehicles and drivers; management of government-owned facilities; franchising; and outright private ownership. Two chapters describe the history of private roads in the United Kingdom and the United States. Contemporary examples are provided of road pricing, privatizing, and contracting out are evident in environs as diverse as Singapore, Southern California, and Scandinavia, and cities as different as Bergen, Norway, and London, England. Finally, several chapters examine strategies for implementing privatization. The principles governing providing scarce resources in free societies are well known. We apply them to such necessities as energy, food, and water so why not to "road space"? The main obstacle to private, or semi-private, ownership of roads is likely to remain the reluctance of the political class to give up a lucrative source of power and influence. Those who want decisions about road services to be controlled by the interplay of consumers and suppliers in free markets, rat

Book The Street Smart Salesman

Download or read book The Street Smart Salesman written by Anthony Belli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-05-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GROWING UP IN POVERTY, every day is a battle with fear, stress, and anxiety. Mistakes, misreads, misplays, miscalculations: all can end in missed opportunities that may never come again. The struggles of the poor demand courage, stamina, constant re-ordering of priorities, and the need for winning strategies. Salespeople from entry-level cold callers to wily veterans suffer much the same anxieties but lack the street-smart skills that a deeply deprived childhood demands: adapt or die, while still having fun! Author Anthony Belli is a millionaire high-performance salesman and sales force manager who grew up dirt poor in East Harlem, New York. Often hungry and without a cent in his pocket, as a child, Belli became expert in the highly creative art of person-to-person negotiation using a variety of risk- managed, cash-producing techniques to underwrite his next slice of pizza, tactics he describes as "eating without stealing." The Street-Smart Salesman imparts Belli's hard-earned wisdom and advice to the lasting benefit of a salesperson's bottom line and ability to sleep at night. Populated with real-life characters from Belli's old neighborhood deadbeat landlord, hooker with a heart, mobbed-up candy store owner, countless junkies, winos, and wiseguys this unflinching memoir teaches how the survival skills of the honest poor can be used to maximize success in sales. Belli's wholly unconventional, ghetto-tested strategies include: Minimize cold-calling: Using customers' networks to supply your pipeline Recognition that sales are driven by emotions not logic, and not price Playing dumb: When to talk and when to shut up Why hope is your enemy and reality your friend Ways to play a last-minute balky customer Prioritizing for profit And more! Belli's hard-earned insights defy conventional sales training wisdom by valuing humility, creativity, attention, and improvisation over the vaunted one-two punch of ceaseless script recitation accompanied by free samples. Take his advice to heart, and watch your anxiety recede as your fortunes grow.
