Book Street Shrines of Kirtipur Nepal

Download or read book Street Shrines of Kirtipur Nepal written by Mehrdad Shokoohy and published by . This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The streets of historic Kirtipur, as with other towns of the Kathmandu Valley, are studded with small shrines dedicated to clan and family gods, the Hindu deities or to the Lord Buddha. These shrines, many not higher than eye-level, are perhaps the most distinct landmarks - or nodes - of the urban environment, and while the tiered roofs of the grand temples distinguish the skyline and the townscape, the street shrines are features which, apart from their religious and social significance, contribute to the individuality of character and the disposition of each street or neighbourhood.

Download or read book Himalayan Architecture written by Ronald M. Bernier and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This broad treatment of architecture throughout the region of the Himalaya mountains is the first book of its kind. The author has based this study on many years of research in Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Assam, and the Darjeeling area of northeast India, northern Pakistan, and Himachal Pradesh in India's northwest. These areas make up an artistic and, to some degree, a cultural unit. It is unique and definable for its design qualities as well as its use of materials. Dramatic and lofty structures rise as towering palaces and as temples dedicated to Hindu and Buddhist ideals. The impact of neighboring Tibet and India is often evident in the art, but other influences are found as well. The area has not been isolated, as some studies suggest, but was in fact always linked to the rest of Asia and to the West by means of the Silk Road, at least since the second century B.C. This study progresses from east to west, beginning in the foothills of India's Assam. It is richly illustrated with photographs, most of which are the author's or his wife's, and many of the photographs are published here for the first time. The archives of the Archaeological Survey of India and the Department of Archaeology of His Majesty's Government of Nepal are also used here.

  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Nepal written by Michael J. Hutt and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 1995 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Essential for both the traveller and scholar alike, Nepal fills a long dormant gap in the literature of this spectacular region and is a product of many years of individual research by scholars of Nepal's history, religion, art and sociology. It draws on a variety of authoritative studies of Nepal's cultural history that have been published in European and Nepalese languages." "The guide begins with an overview of the history of Nepal. This focuses on the Kathmandu Valley, with its rich and sophisticated culture, but also outlines developments of historical importance outside the Valley. This is followed by a detailed introduction to religion as it is practised in Nepal: here, the focus is on Hinduism and Buddhism, and on the major deities of each tradition, their relationship to one another, and their representation in art and sculpture." "Although written mainly by academics, the book is intended for a general readership. Easily portable in format, Nepal does not tell the reader where to stay, what to eat or what to wear. It will though help those who wish to appreciate the cultural splendours of Nepal in their historical and religious context and require more information than is imparted by the average tourist guidebook."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Muslim Architecture of South India

Download or read book Muslim Architecture of South India written by Mehrdad Shokoohy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reinterprets the Muslim architecture and urban planning of South India, looking beyond the Deccan to the regions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala - the historic coasts of Coromandel and Malabar. For the first time a detailed survey of the Muslim monuments of the historic ports and towns demonstrates a rich and diverse architectural tradition entirely independent from the better known architecture of North India and the Deccan sultanates. The book, extensively illustrated with photographs and architectural drawings, widens the horizons of our understanding of Muslim India and will no doubt pave new paths for future studies in the field.
