Book excerpt: It's a life to be envied and desired, filled with private jets, millions of dollars, and tons of cocaine. It is also a life many would kill for-literally. After paying his debt to society, Kilo fights to reclaim his place in that life. Fresh out of prison, he's back on the streets as lethal as ever. As the number one drug lord, he is the head of one of the most notorious cocaine and heroin operations in America. Kilo's power and wealth surpasses even that of Q, a man who is feared by all. But Q is much more than Kilo's rival-he is also the father of Tina, Kilo's beautiful half-African American, half-Colombian fiancee. Desperate to protect his place and power, Q coerces Derrick, a lethal, young fifth-degree black belt into becoming an enforcer in his empire. Now, no one is safe. Derrick quickly builds his reputation by kicking ass from Baltimore to Philly to Virginia. Just as quickly, his honesty, loyalty, and respect earn Q's loyalty in return-and this brings him no small amount of animosity from the other drug lords. Big R, Q's right-hand man, has put his new rival in his sights. Can both survive in this bloody society? Spanning decades tainted by murder, deception, lies, and greed, Street Certified continues the saga of Hustler's Greed.

Book excerpt: Hollywood celebrities are doing it. Corporate moguls are doing it. But what about those of us living in the real world—and on a real budget? Author and holistic health practitioner Victoria Moran started eating only plants nearly thirty years ago, raised her daughter, Adair, vegan from birth, and maintains a sixty-pound weight loss. In Main Street Vegan, Moran offers a complete guide to making this dietary and lifestyle shift with an emphasis on practical "baby steps," proving that you don’t have to have a personal chef or lifestyle coach on speed dial to experience the physical and spiritual benefits of being a vegan. This book provides practical advice and inspiration for everyone—from Main Street to Wall Street, and everywhere between. "Finally, a book that isn't preaching to the vegan choir, but to the people in the pews—and the ones who can’t fit in those pews. This is a book for the Main Street majority who aren’t vegans. Once you read this, you'll know it's possible to get healthy and enjoy doing it—even if you live in Paramus or Peoria."—Michael Moore "A great read for vegans and aspiring vegans."—Russell Simmons "Yet another divine gift from Victoria Moran. Book Education and Science in the Best Interest of the Child

Download or read book Education and Science in the Best Interest of the Child written by Christopher K. Slaton EdD and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Search for Policy We have confirmed through our October 11, 2016, building human assets meeting with the California Department of Education that there is no federal or state policy in place to address the eligibility status of children from a family history of suffering from substance abuserelated disorders. Hence, the Building Human Assets Project Human Systems Research in Education study is in an area not covered by federal or state laws or regulations. This is why a new scientific approach is needed in the best interest of the child. To the benefit of all children, the Individuals with Disabilities Act was reauthorized and signed into law on December 3, 2004 as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004, Public Law 108-446. This includes several requirements effective July 1, 2005, which calls for states to establish policies and regulations that require referral for early intervention services of a child under the age of three who is identified as affected by illegal substance abuse or withdrawal symptoms resulting from parental drug exposure (Section 637[a][6][B]). This relates to the anatomy of the child suspected of suffering from a family history of substance abuserelated disorders The Keeping Children and Families Safe Act of 2003 was intended to add new requirements under the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act of 2004, to include the requirement that states have policies and procedures in place which require health care providers to notify Child Protective Services of infants born and identified as being affected by illegal substance abuse or withdrawal symptoms that result from prenatal drug exposure. Hence, the educational implications for children inflicted with disorders as a result of exposure to drugs in the utero. Early intervention and treatment is a basic need. The 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) shifts federal accountability provisions to the states. ESSA is the law that governs the United States K-12 public education policy, and replaces the No Child Left Behind Act through the reauthorization of the 1965 elementary and secondary education Act (ESEA). ESEA established the American federal governments expanded role in funding education in the best interest of the child. This is the sense through which the words the family community engagement reflects on the compelling needs of the child, the family, and the community.

Book The Churches and the Working Classes

Download or read book The Churches and the Working Classes written by Patricia Midgley and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to our perception of the centrality of the churches in English life in the nineteenth century, the disappointing results of the 1851 Religious Census led religious leaders to seek a variety of ways to increase religious allegiance as the century progressed. The apparent apathy and lack of interest in formal religion on the part of the working classes was particularly galling, and the various denominations tried hard to attract them through evangelical missions as well as social and charitable ventures which sometimes competed with religious concerns, to the latter’s detriment. This book traces the motivations, concerns and efforts of the churches, particularly in the period between 1870 and 1920, and the ambivalent responses of ordinary people. The Education Act of 1870 led to the churches losing their hold on the education of the young, a consequence foreseen by many church leaders, but unable to be prevented. By 1920 it was apparent that the churches’ optimism regarding an increased role with a war-weary population would not be fulfilled. The focus is on the city of Leeds, representative of the industrialised urban areas with burgeoning populations which proved to be such a challenge to the churches, at the same time stimulating them to ever-greater efforts.
