Book Streambank Stabilization Measures for Highway Stream Crossings

Download or read book Streambank Stabilization Measures for Highway Stream Crossings written by Scott A. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary off two reports resulting from a review of the applicability and usefulness of countermeasures used to stabilize eroding streambanks in the vicinity of roadways and at bridge crossings is given. The first report discusses erosion processes in channel bends and methods of controlling this erosion, identifies useful flow control and streambank stabilization structures, and provides guidelines for the selection of an appropriate flow control or streambank stabilization countermeasure for a particular field design condition. Some design information for specific countermeasure types is also included. The second report looks in detail at the applicability and design of spur-type-flow-control and streambank stabilization structures. The report alerts engineers to the utility of spurs, including economic and other advantages, and provides a treatment of the effectiveness and limitations of spur-type structuring. Design guidelines for these spur-type structures are developed based on field and laboratory experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bio-Stabilization Case Studies: Treatment and Performance Evaluation" describes and evaluates 30 projects from across the United States where bio-stabilization was employed to address a detrimental naturally occurring process or byproduct of the built environment. Bio-stabilization (or soil bioengineering) refers to the use of plant materials, primarily live cuttings, arranged in the ground in different arrays to reinforce soils and protect upland slopes and/or stream banks against surficial erosion and shallow slope failures. Examples included in the collection represent different regions of the country and their specific conditions and challenges. Each project is illustrated with a number of distinctive photographs to support the reader's understanding and showcase the wide scope of projects and techniques presented. The volume is ideal for civil and environmental engineers and environmental scientists working on watershed, infrastructure projects, and municipal scale installations.

Book Section 32 Program Streambank Erosion Control Evaluation and Demonstration Work Unit 4

Download or read book Section 32 Program Streambank Erosion Control Evaluation and Demonstration Work Unit 4 written by Alston C. Spivey and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted at the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) on aluminum grids to determine the suitability of these materials as a potential bank protection system. Specifically, this test examined a grid/vegetation system in combination as a possible means for controlling bank erosion. The system was evaluated for effectiveness and durability in controlling erosion, ease of placement, and cost. It was envisioned that this system might be employed where something more durable than vegetation, but less durable than riprap, is believed necessary. The test area with the aluminum grid and rye grass growing in the areas surrounded by the hexagonal cells experienced very little or no erosion. The test area with rye grass (only) growing experienced some erosion, while the area adjacent to the test area experienced severe erosion.
