Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 36 (thesis year 1991) a total of 11,024 thesis titles from 23 Canadian and 161 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 36 reports theses submitted in 1991, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Pennsylvanian strata in southwestern Montana include the Quadrant and at least the upper beds of the Amsden Formation. Rocks of equivalent age are found throughout most of south-central Montana and extend into neighboring states to the east, south, and southwest, where they are known under various formational names. For some time it has been believed that a contribution to Pennsylvanian stratigraphy in this area could be made by study of the micro-fauna, particularly the fusulinids. For this study, sections previously measured and reported as being fairly complete and well-exposed were revisited for detailed examination. The sections examined were chosen with the idea in mind of obtaining a series of sections which would show the maximum variation in facies and thickness in relation to the presumed positions of the ancient Pennsylvanian shorelines. All types of sediments were examined for fusulinids, particular attention being paid to the shales, carbonates, and cherts. Nine sections of Pennsylvanian strata were examined and measured in detail. In addition, four other sections were examined for fusulinid remains. Fusulinids were found to occur in only three sections. Fortunately, these sections are situated in critical areas, thereby establishing important relationships. New information has been found concerning the correlation and geologic age of the Pennsylvanian strata. These data, as well as other pertinent information pertaining to the Pennsylvanian sediments, are discussed in the body of the text and summarized in the conclusions.

Book excerpt: The Sedimentary Basins of the United States and Canada, Second Edition, focuses on the large, regional, sedimentary accumulations in Canada and the United States. Each chapter provides a succinct summary of the tectonic setting and structural and paleogeographic evolution of the basin it covers, with details on structure and stratigraphy. The book features four new chapters that cover the sedimentary basins of Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. In addition to sedimentary geologists, this updated reference is relevant for basin analysis, regional geology, stratigraphy, and for those working in the hydrocarbon exploration industry. - Features updates to existing chapters, along with new chapters on sedimentary basins in Alaska and Arctic Canada - Includes nearly 300 detailed, full-color paleogeographic maps - Written for general geological audiences and individuals working in the resources sector, particularly those in the fossil fuel industry
