Each state will receive funds that are proportional to the number and percentage of children living in poverty and then host competitions to determine how the funds will be distributed among the districts and schools. In order to aid educators in implementing these components in the early grades, the International Reading Association has assembled Evidence-Based Reading Instruction: Putting the National Reading Panel Report Into Practice, a timely and helpful compilation of articles from its journal The Reading Teacher. The first five sections are grouped according to the five essential components. Each section offers a summary and discussion of the NRP findings, and presents several articles from The Reading Teacher that provide concrete descriptions of the recommended practices. The final section includes articles that employ practices from two or more of the essential components, and the appendixes contain the Association's position statement What Is Evidence-Based Reading Instruction? and a useful list of Association resources cited in the NRP Report. This compilation will help educators implement practices consistent with scientifically based reading research, but more important, it will help teachers make every child a reader.

Thus, appropriate and effective reading comprehension instruction is critical for this population. Many evidence-based practices are available regarding reading comprehension strategies for typically developing students. However, a review of the literature on reading comprehension strategies and assessments for students with ASD reveals that research in these areas is limited; few evidence-based practices have been identified specifically for this population. Major themes that arose in the literature review included reading abilities of students with ASD, social communication and oral language, reading comprehension assessment structures, types of reading comprehension impairments, and best practices in teaching and assessing reading comprehension. The purpose of this project was to design a reading comprehension strategy and visual resource handbook to be used by special educators, other interventionists, and general education teachers who teach literacy skills to elementary students with ASD. The handbook includes practical, literature-based recommendations for teaching specific skills to students with ASD and reading comprehension impairments. Each of the handbook's six chapters focuses upon one overarching strategy that strong readers use to comprehend text; namely, Making Connections, Asking Questions, Visualizing, Drawing Inferences, Determining Importance of Information, and Synthesizing Information.

Typically, these needs include difficulty with social skills, a need for structure, and fixed interests. High functioning children with ASD may have average or even above average cognitive ability. One way this manifests itself is with a relative strength in decoding skills. However, these children typically have difficulty with reading comprehension. A difficulty for general education teachers, school support staff, and other school personnel that work with these children is they typically do not have the experience, training, and resources to assist the children with reading comprehension needs. This thesis research project was conducted to collect effective strategies that teachers and others could utilize when working on the reading comprehension needs of children with ASD. A comprehensive search of the literature of the history of ASD, children strengths and needs, and strategies that could be used with the children to assist them in their reading comprehension was conducted. The literature review supported the theory that children with ASD do typically exhibit a need in reading comprehension. The project consisted of two resources, a teacher's resource guide and a PowerPoint presentation. The teacher's resource guide presents strategies to help children with ASD develop their reading comprehension. The PowerPoint presentation was designed to provide teachers an overview of the issues, needs, and strategies for these children. Potential benefits of the project was that it included evidence-based strategies, it addressed a relevant need for these children, and the information was presented in a user-friendly format. Two limitations noted were the variations of the manifestation of ASD in children and how some of the strategies may not work for every child. Also of note was that although research in children with ASD has increased, there are still areas concerning reading comprehension that would benefit from further research. Recommendations were made for more research in reading comprehension for children with ASD and more research in social skills.
