Book Strategies on Successful Living Services for American Indians with Disabilities

Download or read book Strategies on Successful Living Services for American Indians with Disabilities written by Priscilla Lansing Sanderson and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a project to promote independent-living outreach services that are culturally relevant for American Indians and Alaska Natives with severe or significant disabilities. A pilot training workshop conducted in Aztec, New Mexico, focused on the importance of service providers understanding American Indian culture and on independent-living strategies for outreach. At the close of the workshop, participants developed Blue Print for Action Plans. Progress outcomes were measured by a 1-month, 3-month, and 6-month evaluation of each action plan and its efficacy. Evaluations described completion of action plan steps, resources used, any revision of steps, barriers encountered and how they were overcome, and exciting aspects of the action plan. Evaluation results revealed that 43 percent of participants had to revise their action plans because of barriers associated with "finding American Indian consumers" due to isolated areas of the reservation and cross-cultural communication problems. A common solution to these barriers was "persistence in outreach services." Results indicate that 44-56 percent of participants who used the pilot training workshop methods for over 6 months increased their level of independent-living service delivery to American Indian clients. Appendices include the workshop agenda, evaluation forms for the workshop and action plans, handouts, a timeline, and the project advisory committee. (Contains 18 data tables and figures.) (SV)

Book The Wiley Handbook of Early Childhood Development Programs Practices and Policies

Download or read book The Wiley Handbook of Early Childhood Development Programs Practices and Policies written by Elizabeth Votruba-Drzal and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first and only comprehensive review of current early childhood development theory, practices, policies, and the science behind them This unique and important bookprovides a comprehensive overview of the current theory, practices, and policies in early childhood development withinthe contexts of family, school, and community, and society at large. Moreover, it synthesizes scientifically rigorous research from an array of disciplines in an effort to identify the most effective strategies for promoting early childhood development. Research into childhood development is booming, and the scientific knowledge base concerning early childhood development is now greater than that of any other stage of the human life span. At the same time, efforts to apply that knowledge to early childhood practices, programs, and policies have never been greater or more urgent. Yet, surprisingly, until The Handbook of Early Childhood Development Programs, Practices, and Policies, there was no comprehensive, critical review of the applied science in the field. The book begins with in-depth coverage of child and family approaches. From there it moves onto a consideration of school- and community-based strategies. It concludes with a discussion of current social policies on health and development in early childhood and their implications. Provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the knowledge base, along with guidance for the future of the field Examines the underlying theory and basic science guiding efforts to promote early childhood development Critically reviews the strength of the empirical support for individual practices, programs, and policies Explores key opportunities and barriers policymakers and practitioners face when implementing various approaches Pays particular attention to socioeconomically disadvantaged and other disenfranchised populations The Handbook of Early Childhood Development Programs, Practices, and Policies is a valuable resource for practitioners, scholars, graduate students, and advanced undergraduate students across the social sciences who are interested in strengthening their understanding of current strategies for promoting early childhood development and the science informing those strategies.

Book Disability and U S Politics

Download or read book Disability and U S Politics written by Dana Lee Baker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 1 billion people worldwide have a disability, and they are all affected by politics. This two-volume work explores key topics at the heart of disability policy, such as voting, race, gender, age, health care, social security, transportation, abuse, and the environment. Disability policy is no longer an area that can be adequately addressed within major areas of public policy such as welfare, health, labor, and education. Disability has become widely acknowledged in recent decades, partly because of the increasing number of disabled citizens across all demographic populations. Advocates argue that diversity of all kinds deserves recognition and accommodation. This set examines policies targeting disability to provide a multifaceted description of the political participation of people with disabilities as well as disability policy development in the United States. The first volume focuses on political participation and voting issues, and the second volume covers disability public policy. In these two volumes, numerous scholars and experts in the social sciences and humanities explore timely topics that are key to disability policy questions, including activism, voting, race, gender, age, health care, social security, civil rights, abuse, the environment, and even death. Readers will better understand the challenges that policymakers face in grappling with controversies over issues of social engineering and public policy, often attempting to reconcile majority experience with minority rights. The chapters analyze the history of disability politics, describe the disability policy infrastructure as it currently exists in the United States, and provide insight into current disability-related controversies.
