Download or read book SAT Prep 2014 written by A1Study A1Study Publishing and published by . This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a recent SAT Math seminar, the event organizer asked the speaker the following question: "Dr Davies, imagine you were meeting a student for the first time, and you had just two minutes to give them the benefit of all of your experience as a SAT Math tutor, and give them the best possible advice on how to tackle the Math Section of the SAT, what would you say?" The audience chuckled as Dr Davies smiled and said "That really puts me on the spot." Before you read Dr Davies's response to this question you should know a little bit about him: The first time he attempted a practice SAT test in his freshman year in High School, he scored a perfect 800 on the math section, with no specialized tutoring. He was (and is) one of those lucky few who just get SAT Math. He was more than just a nerd however; he was popular and well liked and he found it easy to explain to other students how they could also do well. News of his success spread, and throughout his time in High School, he was paid a small fortune by the parents of struggling students who hired him to tutor their children. Dr Davies is now a PhD Physics graduate and expert SAT tutor; his students pay $300 per session to access his insights and strategies - he is also the principal author of this book. This is how he responded to the question: "If I had just two minutes to give my best advice, then the first thing I would say is that SAT Math is very different to High School Math, so you need to learn how to apply your math knowledge in a new way. The best way to do this, is not to spend time learning math concepts, but to pick up a SAT prep book right now, grab a pencil and get stuck in to the Math questions! At first you will struggle, and panic, but you must persevere, and keep practicing. When you come across a question which involves a math topic which you cannot remember, then return to your School Math notes and re-learn the topic. Once you have done this, attempt the question again. You should repeat this process over and over and over until you can achieve a perfect 800 in the math sections of all of the SAT papers you can get your hands on! You may think that this is over-simplifying the process, but for some students, this really is all the advice they need. For most students however, the quickest and most effective way to improve their SAT Math score is to be selective in the questions they attempt. It may sound crazy, but most students can improve their score by attempting fewer questions. Many students waste valuable time on the test attempting the difficult questions which they have little chance of getting correct. Remember, every question is worth one point, whether it is easy, intermediate, or hard, so, for most students their time is better spent concentrating on the questions that they are more likely to get right. In fact, I advise some of my students to completely ignore the hard questions in each math section, and they are often amazed when their scores improve. I also help these students to identify their strengths and the areas that they are comfortable with and I advise them to only attempt questions which fall within their comfort zone... was that 2 minutes?!?" "Just about!" replied the organizer, as the audience applauded. For this book, Dr Davies has carefully devised 200 SAT Math questions, each with detailed insightful solutions which will help you to learn all of the math required for the SAT in exactly the context that you will be tested, and give you all the strategic advice that you will need to tackle the Math sections on this year's SAT with confidence.
