Book Reducing U S Vulnerability to Oil Supply Disruptions

Download or read book Reducing U S Vulnerability to Oil Supply Disruptions written by Walter S. Baer and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vulnerability of the United States to oil supply disruptions is at least as serious as the more chronic economic problems of import dependence. Measures to deal with the vulnerability problem include: increasing oil purchases for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve; providing incentives for private stockpiling; and developing emergency preparedness plans. This does not mean that we should delay current measures to reduce overall import dependence, such as the decontrol of oil and gas prices. But we must focus more clearly on the vulnerability problem itself as the most critical short-term energy issue for the United States and our allies. Only if we are prepared to weather oil supply disruptions in the next few years will we be able to devise longer-term solutions to our energy problems.

Book Over a Barrel

Download or read book Over a Barrel written by John S. Duffield and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is highly dependent on foreign oil. Well over half of the oil and petroleum products consumed in America--approximately 12 million barrels per day, or more than 600 gallons for every man, woman, and child each year--now come from abroad. And the U.S. government projects that the level of imports will only continue to rise, reaching between 16 and 21 million barrels per day by 2025. What precisely are the costs of U.S. foreign oil dependence? Unfortunately, no one has yet offered a satisfactory answer to this vital question. As a result, the costs to the United States of its dependence on oil from abroad have gone largely unrecognized and, in fact, are much greater than most people realize. Some costs, like the annual bill for oil imports--and, by reflection, the price that motorists pay at the pump or the size of homeowners' heating oil bills--are obvious and quantifiable. A number of others, however, are not so apparent or easy to measure. For example, it is difficult to put a price tag on the costs of coddling oil-rich authoritarian regimes at the expense of promoting representative government, human rights, and other important values. This book seeks to remedy this oversight by providing the first comprehensive analysis of the costs--both economic and policy-related--of U.S. foreign oil dependence and how they might be reduced. It shows that since the 1970s, the economic costs alone have run into the trillions of dollars. Successive administrations have tended to neglect the opportunities at home to reduce these costs by limiting demand. Instead, they have emphasized foreign and military policies that have proven both highly expensive and largely unsuccessful. One positive conclusion the author draws is that the opportunities for reducing oil consumption remain largely unexploited and the costs of U.S. foreign oil dependence can still be substantially reduced at relatively little expense. At least as important, however, will be rethinking and revising the expensive foreign, security, and military policies and commitments that have developed around U.S. foreign oil dependence over the past three decades.

Book Addicted to Oil

Download or read book Addicted to Oil written by Thomas D. Kraemer and published by Strategic Studies Institute. This book was released on 2006 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his 2006 State of the Union address, President George W. Bush proclaimed that "America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world." He announced it was time for the United States to "move beyond a petroleum-based economy and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past." He set a goal "to replace more than 75 percent of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025." Only 18 percent of oil imports are projected to come from the Middle East in 2025. The Bush goal in reality only results in a decrease of American oil consumption by 14 percent overall. Oil is a fungible, globally traded commodity with rising demand, so this initiative will have minimal impact on influencing America's national interests in the Middle East. However, most rehabilitation programs follow a 12-step process. The Bush plan is Step one in weaning America from its addiction, and is a necessary, but not fully sufficient, step to ensuring our future national security through Middle East Oil independence.

Book The Outlook for US Oil Dependence

Download or read book The Outlook for US Oil Dependence written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market share OPEC lost in defending higher prices from 1979-1985 is being steadily regained and is projected to exceed 50% by 2000. World oil markets are likely to be as vulnerable to monopoly influence as they were 20 years ago, as OPEC regains lost market share. The U.S. economy appears to be as exposed as it was in the early 1970s to losses from monopoly oil pricing. A simulated 2-year supply reduction in 2005-6 boosts OPEC revenues by roughly half a trillion dollars and costs the U.S. economy an approximately equal amount. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve appears to be of little benefit against such a determined, multi-year supply curtailment either in reducing OPEC revenues or protecting the U.S. economy. Increasing the price elasticity of oil demand and supply in the U.S. and the rest of the world, however, would be an effective strategy.

Book Oil Vulnerabilities and United States Strategy

Download or read book Oil Vulnerabilities and United States Strategy written by Shawn P. Walsh and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States, its industries, livelihood, and economy depend on oil. The United States is the world's largest consumer of oil, with daily usage of approximately 20 million barrels. Approximately 12.6 million barrels of oil per day is imported from foreign sources. Dependence on foreign oil leaves the American lifestyle, its freedoms, and its economy extremely vulnerable to risk, and exposed to factors outside the United States' immediate control. Foreign political or military action, acts of terrorism home or abroad, or the world's growing and competing demands for limited oil supplies are factors that could affect America's energy security. These factors place the United States in a precarious position. As a new world order continues to take shape, oil remains a strategic commodity, critical to national strategies and international politics. Is the US government promoting technology advances to find effective, efficient, and affordable solutions to fossil fuels? Research for this project intends to explore vulnerabilities associated with the United States' dependence on foreign oil and reveal if the United States has an effective strategy to reduce dependence on foreign oil.

Book US Oil Dependency

Download or read book US Oil Dependency written by Joseph E. Czarnik and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's economy, American's very way of life, has become dependent on foreign oil. America can reverse its oil dependency over generations, but in terms of days, weeks, or even months America is perilously dependent on the free flow of oil and the energy oil produces. It is reasonable to suggest that America should have a plan to deal with a man-made (9/11) or natural (Katrina) disruption to America's oil needs. Hurricane Katrina suggests that America does not have an emergency energy plan to deal with short-term energy disruption. This paper's focus is America's need for a plan to deal with short-term energy disruption, a proposed plan, and how that plan could be used as a Flexible Deterrent Option.

Book The Strategic Implications for U S Persian Gulf Relations on Domestic and Worldwide Oil Production for Future U S Oil Demand

Download or read book The Strategic Implications for U S Persian Gulf Relations on Domestic and Worldwide Oil Production for Future U S Oil Demand written by Sanford S. Kaplan and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. dependence on oil imports is examined in light of current U.S. oil production, its potential for future discoveries, and the availability of oil products form Venezuela, Mexico, and other South American countries. There is no geologic reason why the U.S. cannot continue to replace its reserves consumed annually, continue conservation efforts reducing its import dependence, and shift its foreign oil supply closer to home, i.e. Mexico and South America. Increasing the price of oil domestically ensures continued exploration and shifting the source of imports reduces the length of SLOC'S carrying critical oil products.
