Le 25 avril 2013, le Conseil de Sécurité charge la Mission Multidimensionnelle Intégrée des Nations Unies pour la Stabilisation au Mali (MINUSMA) par le biais de l'alinéa f) de la résolution 2100 de « protéger les sites culturels et historiques du pays contre toutes attaques, en collaboration avec l'UNESCO ». Or, les sites historiques et culturels du pays réhabilités et reconstruits en priorité par l'unité 'Environnement et Culture' de cette opération ont été les sites classés sur la liste du patrimoine mondial, à savoir les mausolées de Tombouctou. Alors qu'en 2015 le groupe terroriste ISIS entame une campagne de destruction systématique des sites du patrimoine mondial irakiens et syriens, la protection du patrimoine culturel par la MINUSMA devient le symbole de la défense de l'humanité face à l'inhumanité, de la civilisation face à la barbarie. Fondée sur une observation participante à l'UNESCO et au Département des Opérations de la Paix de l'ONU, mais également sur des entretiens avec les fonctionnaires onusiens au siège et sur le terrain des opérations de paix ainsi que sur un travail d'archives, cette thèse vise à comprendre comment une initiative ponctuelle et locale telle que la protection du patrimoine culturel par la MINUSMA est devenue, à la faveur d'un contexte de crise, le cœur d'une rhétorique prétendant à l'universalisme. Afin de faire de la MINUSMA un précédent pour les futures opérations de paix, trois types d'acteurs (l'UNESCO, sa Directrice Générale et certains de ses Etats membres) ont en effet donné corps à l'humanité par le biais de son patrimoine commun : en identifiant les coupables (par un processus de criminalisation) et les victimes de sa destruction (par un processus de victimisation) mais aussi ses défenseurs (par un processus d'héroïsation).
