Book Strategic Plan for Conducting Large Geographic Scale Ship Based Surveys to Support the U S Marine Mammal Protection and Endangered Species Acts

Download or read book Strategic Plan for Conducting Large Geographic Scale Ship Based Surveys to Support the U S Marine Mammal Protection and Endangered Species Acts written by Ballance, Lisa T. and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2017 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation for this strategic plan is to provide a national, unified approach for meeting science needs in partial support of the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The specific objective is to provide a framework for discussion of ship time with respect to, chiefly, cetacean science needs. The plan presented here is meant to aid in strategic planning for these science requirements in the context of other National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) priorities and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Healthy Ocean Goal. In particular, it is hoped that a proactive and comprehensive strategic plan based on a predictable schedule and geographic area rotation will facilitate the continuation, and in some cases, the initial implementation of, research that will provide the majority of data required to meet NMFS’ cetacean-related mandates. • Author : W. John Richardson
  • Publisher : Academic Press

Download or read book Marine Mammals and Noise written by W. John Richardson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many marine mammals communicate by emitting sounds that pass through water. Such sounds can be received across great distances and can influence the behavior of these undersea creatures. In the past few decades, the oceans have become increasingly noisy, as underwater sounds from propellers, sonars, and other human activities make it difficult for marine mammals to communicate. This book discusses, among many other topics, just how well marine mammals hear, how noisy the oceans have become, and what effects these new sounds have on marine mammals. The baseline of ambient noise, the sounds produced by machines and mammals, the sensitivity of marine mammal hearing, and the reactions of marine mammals are also examined. An essential addition to any marine biologist's library, Marine Mammals and Noise will be especially appealing to marine mammalogists, researchers, policy makers and regulators, and marine biologists and oceanographers using sound in their research.

Book An Evaluation of Marine Mammal Surveys to Support Washington State s Marine Spatial Planning Process

Download or read book An Evaluation of Marine Mammal Surveys to Support Washington State s Marine Spatial Planning Process written by Laura M. Kracker and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The objective of this report is to identify and evaluate existing datasets related to the distribution of marine mammals along the Northwest coast of the United States which can support Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) by the State of Washington. In this report, we consider the degree to which existing datasets are able to represent species distributions and provide information needed by Washington to mitigate potential conflicts among ocean users and ensure adequate biological conservation. A review of pelagic, nearshore and shore-based surveys, as well as data collected via passive acoustic sensors and animal borne sensors, is provided. This document is organized by the scale at which the surveys are conducted, starting with broad-scale offshore cetacean surveys observed primarily from ships. Next, moderate scale surveys (e.g., Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and state waters) conducted from various platforms are described, followed by nearshore/onshore pinniped surveys. Lastly, brief reviews of passive acoustic surveys and animal borne sensor data available in the region are provided"--About This Document. Take is defined under the MMPA as 'to harass, hunt, capture, or kill, or attempt to harass, hunt, capture, or kill any marine mammal' (16 USC 1361 et seq.) and further defined by regulation (50 CFR 216.3) as 'to harass, hunt, capture, collect, or kill, or attempt to harass, hunt, capture, collect, or kill any marine mammal. This includes, without limitation, any of the following: -- the collection of dead animals, or parts thereof -- the restraint or detention of a marine mammal, no matter how temporary -- tagging a marine mammal -- the negligent or intentional operation of an aircraft or vessel -- the doing of any other negligent or intentional act which results in disturbing or molesting a marine mammal -- feeding or attempting to feed a marine mammal in the wild'"--Page 2.
