Contributions range broadly across time and space, from Milton Friedman and the debate over guaranteed income in the post-war United States to the emergence of the European basic income movement in the 1980s and the politics of cash transfers in contemporary South Africa. What kinds of problems is basic income designed to solve, and how have policy proposals been shaped by changing attitudes to gender roles and the boundaries of social citizenship? M&E can play a supporting role in the implementation of national strategies for phytosanitary systems, and in the implementation of the IPPC Strategic Framework (2020–2030). NPPOs that have M&E systems and processes in place can respond more effectively to changing circumstances and can manage their work to align with national and international strategic plans or frameworks. Learning from each other on what works in different contexts can help countries improve M&E practices and thus increase the impact of their work to keep plant resources free of pests.

As Indigenous rights include the right to self-determination, the book contends that restored practices of Indigenous sovereignty constitute important steps forward in securing better relationships between Indigenous peoples and the Canadian state. While the Canadian state maintains its position of dominance with respect to the exercise of state sovereignty, Tim Schouls reveals how Indigenous nations are nevertheless carving out and reclaiming areas of significant political power as their own. By means of strategically acquired legal concessions, through hard-fought political negotiations, and sometimes through simple declarations of intent, Indigenous nations have repeatedly compelled the Canadian state to roll back its jurisdiction over them. In doing so, they have enhanced their prospects for political sovereignty within Canada. As such, they now increasingly occupy what Schouls refers to metaphorically as “the spaces in between.” The book asserts that occupation of these jurisdictional “spaces in between” not only goes some distance in meeting the requirements of Indigenous rights but also contributes to Indigenous community autonomy and well-being, enhancing prospects for reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and the Canadian state.

The review process followed a systematic approach to gather, assess and analyse data and information related to food, diet and nutrient intakes of the Myanmar people, agricultural production and food supply, food sustainability, cultural food preference and behaviour, prevalence of malnutrition and diet-related diseases. The evidence review provides justifications for making FBDG recommendations based on up-to-date and country-specific information, as well as the global evidence base. The evidence review increases the transparency of the evidence-based process in establishing the Myanmar FBDGs. Moreover, The evidence review for dietary guidance is the first structured evidence review to guide FBDGs development in Myanmar.

Book excerpt: In view of the projected world water demand, increased water use efficiency in irrigation is crucial to sustainably increase agricultural productivity. Paddy field systems are especially water demanding, though products such as rice is not only a staple food, but also constitutes a major social and economic activity providing public goods and is a key source of employment and income for the rural population in Zambia. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been active to increase the understanding of the status of water use efficiency and water productivity in Zambia through implementing the project “Efficient Agricultural Water Use and Management Enhancement in Paddy Fields”, funded by the Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). The project objective is to identify limits and potentials of paddy rice production at national level. The project findings presented in this report is a basis for assisting the country with the evaluation of the status of water use efficiency and water productivity of paddy fields, providing technical and policy support to enhance water resources management in Zambia. This report will help increasing the knowledge and building capacities of technical experts in relevant institutions, ministries and universities in Zambia. Its analysis of best practices will assist in determining the needs and existing gaps and what options are available to fill these gaps. Furthermore, the policy action matrix developed and the investment portfolio compiled will support the development of future financial plans in the country.
