Book Strategic Group Performance and Dynamics Under Different Economic Conditions

Download or read book Strategic Group Performance and Dynamics Under Different Economic Conditions written by Muhammed Altuntas and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyse Strategic Groups in the German insurance market. We use cluster analysis to subdivide Insurance Groups into Strategic Groups. Furthermore, we analyse whether Strategic Group affiliation can affect the performance of the Insurance Groups' property-liability subsidiaries. In addition, we examine the consequences of the financial crisis of 2008 on the competitive situation in the German insurance sector and examine whether changes in Strategic Group affiliation can be considered as a consequence of the financial crisis. Using a dataset of 829 firm year observations for the years 2004 to 2012, our results indicate the existence of three Strategic Groups in the German insurance sector. In addition, we find that performance differences on subsidiary-level can be attributed to Strategic Group affiliation. Furthermore, we do not find evidence that the financial crisis induced changes in Strategic Group affiliation.

Book Dynamic Capabilities

Download or read book Dynamic Capabilities written by Constance E. Helfat and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating, adapting to, and exploiting change is inherently entrepreneurial. To survive and prosper under conditions of change, firms must develop the “dynamic capabilities” to create, extend, and modify the ways in which they operate. The capacity of an organization to create, extend, or modify its resource base is vital. Since the concept of dynamic capabilities was first introduced, much research has elaborated the initial idea. This important book by Constance Helfat and her team of leading scholars provides a timely focus on in-depth examples of corporate dynamic capabilities. Examining these in the different contexts of alliances, acquisitions, and management, the book gives students and researchers a succinct, up-to-date definition of dynamic capabilities and the strategic management theories around them.

Book Commitment

Download or read book Commitment written by Pankaj Ghemawat and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author examines commitment - the tendency of business strategies to persist over time - and demonstrates with actual company examples how current decisions are constrained by past decisions and future decisions by current ones. Topics covered include four business conditions facing managers who look to the future: locked-in - when a company maintains a strategy as a result of massive investment; locked-out - the cost of lost opportunities that can never be pursued again; lags - making it imperative to stick with a strategy until certain key results are achieved; inertia - the tendency of a company to preserve the status quo. The text also attempts to explain why one company's performance differs from its competitors.

Book Dynamic Strategy and Performance of German Mutual Fund Managers

Download or read book Dynamic Strategy and Performance of German Mutual Fund Managers written by Nikola Jelicic and published by Diplomica Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Dynamic Strategic Groups

Download or read book Dynamic Strategic Groups written by Wayne S. DeSarbo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent theoretical developments in the domain of strategic groups, specifically those related to cognitive groups and strategic group identity, seem to suggest that strategic group membership is likely to be relatively stable over time and that firms in a strategic group co-evolve. Yet appropriate data analytic approaches that use information about firms over time to identify stable strategic groups and their evolutionary paths have been lacking. To overcome such limitations, this research proposes a new clusterwise bilinear multidimensional scaling model that can simultaneously identify (1) the number of strategic groups, (2) the dimensions on which the strategic groups are based, and (3) the evolution of the strategy of these groups over time. Our discussion encompasses various alternative model specifications, together with model selection heuristics based on statistical information criteria. An illustration of the proposed methodology using data pertaining to strategic variables for a sample of public banks in the tristate area of New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania across three time periods (1995, 1999, and 2003) identifies two underlying dimensions with five strategic groups that display very different evolutionary paths over time. Post hoc analysis shows pronounced differences in firm performance across the five derived strategic groups. This article concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings, as well as potential future research directions. John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Book Strategic Analysis

Download or read book Strategic Analysis written by Andrea Beretta Zanoni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-08-25 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, competition has become increasingly more complex, variable and dynamic, as can be seen in phenomena like globalization and technological acceleration. To cope with the dynamism and uncertainty of competition, enterprises need capabilities that enable them to respond to competition, as well as to improve their analytical skills and knowledge in order to better manage new strategic projects. Strategic analysis uses both quantitative and qualitative tools to understand both competitive contexts and available company resources. In Strategic Analysis: Processes and Tools, author Andrea Beretta Zanoni develops a theory of strategic analysis and offers models for the application of strategic analysis tools during all phases of the process including planning and decision-making, the development of control, and the formulation of a strategic diagnosis.

Book Strategy As Action

Download or read book Strategy As Action written by Curtis M. Grimm and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategy as Action presents an action plan for how firms can build, improve, and defend their competitive advantage at every stage of their life cycle. For start-up firms entering a market, it provides a model for exploiting competitive uncertainty and blind spots; for growth firms who have established some market advantages, it provides an action plan for exploiting relative resources; for mature firms, it explains how to exploit market position; finally, for firms that have no decisive resource advantage, it provides an action plan based on firm co-operative reactions.

This new volume provides a broad view of strategy covering the conventional as well as less mainstream alternatives like the growing strategy-as-practice perspective. It also does a great job of providing balanced critiques of the existing orthodoxy and provides explicit connections to some of the more accessible academic articles providing more depth to the arguments presented. All in all, it is an excellent break from the unfortunate tendency to make strategy a narrow economic enterprise in a world that is far more complex and social than that. Strategy: Theory and Practice is a welcome addition to the available texts on strategy" - Nelson Phillips, Professor of Strategy and Organizational Behaviour Co-Editor, Journal of Management Inquiry "A super and overdue book. It embraces the central importance of organization theory and, especially, the play of power and politics both inside and outside the organization. This erudite, almost polemical book promises to redraw how we approach the study of strategy - and not before time!" - Royston Greenwood, Associate Dean, School of Business, University of Alberta "It explains where strategy originates from and how contemporary ideas and practices facilitate or constrain decision-making and action. In particular, this book illuminates the role of power and politics in strategy - an issue that has been overlooked in most textbooks in this area. Enjoyable and inspiring reading for students, researchers and practitioners" - Eero Vaara, Professor of Management and Organization Dean of Research Hanken School of Economics, Helsinki "The authors have managed to produce a unique and admirable combination of critical external engagement with 'strategy', understood as a complex object of organizational and political construction, and a useable insiders text book rich in illustrative cases. As such it is essential reading for academics, students and practitioners - all of whom will discover how theory and practice are more intertwined than they ever imagined" - Michael Power, Professor of Accounting, London School of Economics and Political Science

Book Resources Firms and Strategies

Download or read book Resources Firms and Strategies written by Nicolai J. Foss and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic management has been increasingly characterized by an emphasis on core competences. Firms are advised to divest unrelated businesses and return to core business. Moreover, competitive advantage is now increasingly seen as a matter of efficiently deploying scarce knowledge resources toproduct markets. Much of this change in emphasis has occurred because of the emergence of a unified and rigorous approach to strategy, often called the resource-based approach. This Reader brings together extracts from the seminal articles that created this dominant perspective in strategicmanagement. It includes the pioneering work of Selznick, Penrose, and Chandler and more recent writing by Wernerfelt, Barney, Teece, and Prahalad and Hamel.
