Bien que la participation sociale soit un des objectifs des services éducatifs offerts lors de la scolarisation, peu d'études se sont penchées sur cet enjeu, et ce, plus particulièrement pour les adolescents et les jeunes adultes ayant un TSA. Dans cet essai, 32 articles scientifiques et un chapitre de livre ont été recensés. À la lumière des résultats obtenus, la période développementale de l'adolescence représente une fenêtre d'opportunités pour le développement de la participation sociale en raison de la présence quotidienne des adolesents et jeunes adultes avec leurs pairs dans le milieu scolaire. De plus, puisque cette période requiert généralement la distanciation de la cellule familiale par le jeune dans le but de construire son identité personnelle en établissant des liens avec ses pairs, les habiletés sociales sont étroitement liées à la participation sociale. Les résultats obtenus confirment l'importance de la participation sociale pour les jeunes ayant un TSA, de même que la nécessité de soutenir cette participation sociale par l'apprentissage d'habiletés sociales et la multiplication des occasions de les mettre en pratique dans leur collectivité. Des stratégies d'intervention qui permettent de renforcer la résilience de ces jeunes à cette période critique de leur développement sont proposées. Ces stratégies contribuent à soutenir une participation sociale optimale pour ces jeunes dans leur collectivité.

Méthode : Sept ergothérapeutes travaillant auprès des adolescents et jeunes adultes avec un TSA ont répondu à un entretien semi-directif les interrogeant sur leur accompagnement en ergothérapie, et plus particulièrement au niveau des habiletés sociales, de leur généralisation, ainsi que sur leur façon d'intervenir pour favoriser la participation sociale. Ces entretiens ont fait l'objet d'une analyse qualitative longitudinale et transversale. Résultats : Les résultats ont permis d'identifier les principaux axes d'accompagnement et moyens utilisés pour exercer auprès de ce public. Ils ont également mis en avant les leviers et les freins à la généralisation des compétences et à la participation sociale. Conclusion : Cette étude met en avant l'importance de la collaboration entre l'ergothérapeute et l'équipe pluridisciplinaire. Les interventions en milieu écologique ainsi que la diversité des environnements utilisée par l'ergothérapeute et la répétition favorisent la généralisation des compétences sociales.

Or, avec les difficultés sociales et scolaires de ces élèves, l'exigence du ministère de l'Éducation de les instruire dans les classes ordinaires avec les autres élèves et l'imputabilité des écoles envers la population, enseigner à ces élèves représente des défis et il est pertinent de se questionner sur la banque de stratégies d'intervention mises à la disposition des enseignants par le ministère de l'Éducation de l'Ontario. L'objectif de cette étude était de relever les stratégies d'intervention pédagogiques efficaces auprès des adolescents du secondaire sous le spectre de l'autisme proposées par le Ministère et d'en ressortir les avantages et les limites en se reportant à la documentation scientifique. Pour atteindre l'objectif de la recherche, une méthode d'analyse des données secondaire, plus particulièrement la synthèse descriptive et critique, a été utilisée. Le corpus de données analysé était essentiellement composé de documents officiels du ministère de l'Éducation de l'Ontario, publiés de 2000 à 2019, de façon à composer un portrait plus juste et à jour des stratégies d'intervention recommandées par le Ministère dans l'enseignement aux élèves sous le spectre et plus particulièrement les adolescents. Les résultats montrent que les stratégies d'enseignement ou les programmes efficaces proposés par le Ministère sont fondés sur la recherche empirique, centrés sur l'élève, conçus selon ses bénéfices et implications éducatives pour répondre à ses besoins et résultent d'un travail d'équipe multidisciplinaire. Ce sont les stratégies suivantes qui semblent plus probantes : le plan d'enseignement individuel (PEI), la planification des transitions, les stratégies incorporant l'analyse comportementale appliquée (ACA), la pédagogie différenciée, l'utilisation des supports visuels, l'aménagement d'un cadre structuré, l'utilisation de la technologie d'aide, la surveillance des stimuli sensoriels et le modèle Connexions pour les élèves. Les trois premières sont rendues obligatoires par le Ministère. Ces recommandations ministérielles sont issues de recherches scientifiques. Cependant, les référents sont datés et nécessitent une mise à jour en vue d'y intégrer les nouvelles stratégies valides et émergentes.

Book excerpt: Introduction : Dans les services de garde éducatifs à la petite enfance (SGÉE) au Québec, peu de ressources professionnelles du réseau de la santé et des services sociaux sont déployées pour soutenir l'inclusion des tout-petits présentant une diversité de profils. Les enfants autistes intégrés dans les SGÉE bénéficient généralement d'une structure claire et des exigences adaptées à leurs capacités. Plusieurs ont des sensibilités sensorielles différentes de la majorité qu'il convient de considérer pour mieux favoriser leur participation. Les éducatrices connaissent toutefois peu de stratégies en lien avec celles-ci et il est pertinent de déterminer comment les outiller sur le sujet. Objectifs : La présente thèse vise donc à répondre à la question de recherche : Comment renforcer les capacités des éducatrices en services éducatifs à la petite enfance à soutenir la participation de l'enfant autiste avec des sensibilités sensorielles? Pour y répondre, trois objectifs ont été poursuivis : 1) déterminer les interventions existantes en ergothérapie pour renforcer les capacités des adultes significatifs dans la vie de l'enfant; 2) développer une intervention faisable et acceptable pour renforcer les capacités des éducatrices à la petite enfance à favoriser la participation d'un enfant autiste avec des sensibilités sensorielles; 3) évaluer les retombées de cette intervention. Méthodes : Pour le premier objectif, un examen de la portée a été réalisé pour décrire les interventions documentées dans la littérature. Pour le deuxième objectif, des actrices clés des réseaux de la santé et des SGÉE ont été sollicitées pour développer une intervention qui répondait aux besoins et à la réalité de chacun. Pour répondre aux deuxième et troisième objectifs, une étude de cas multiples avec six éducatrices à la petite enfance qui accueillent un enfant autiste a permis de documenter la faisabilité et l'acceptabilité de cette intervention ainsi que ses retombées. Résultats : Un total de 28 articles a été inclus dans l'examen de la portée. L'analyse de leurs résultats, combinée à des échanges avec des ergothérapeutes cliniciennes, a permis de décrire trois types d'intervention de renforcement des capacités : 1) transfert d'information à l'adulte; 2) activité faite avec l'enfant et l'adulte; 3) résolution de problème avec l'adulte. Ces définitions et le cadre de référence clinique développé par Ashburner, Rodger, Ziviani et Hinder (2014) ont contribué au développement d'une intervention qui incluait un transfert d'information par cinq capsules vidéo, combinées à une résolution de problème sous la forme de trois à cinq rencontres de coaching individuel. Les perspectives de six éducatrices quant à la faisabilité et l'acceptabilité de l'intervention mise en place étaient positives, bien qu'elles aient suggéré des manières de faciliter son implantation. L'intervention a contribué à la mise en place de stratégies variées, à une meilleure participation de l'enfant dans les défis ciblés par l'éducatrice et à l'amélioration du sentiment de compétence de l'éducatrice. Conclusion : Cette thèse permet de mettre en évidence la possibilité de renforcer les capacités des éducatrices avec une intervention de courte durée. Pour ce faire, il est toutefois essentiel d'aller au-delà du transfert d'information en accompagnant l'éducatrice dans un processus de résolution de problèmes. Il est critique de rendre le soutien professionnel plus accessible dans les SGÉE pour soutenir le développement et la participation d'une plus grande diversité d'enfants.

It is hypothesized that tools such as games, virtual reality, or applications for smartphones may foster learning, enhance motivation, promote behavioral change, support psychotherapy, favor empowerment, and improve some cognitive functions. Computers and games may create supports for training or help people with cognitive, emotional, or behavioral change. Games take various formats, from board games to informatics to games with interactive rules of play. Similarly, computer tools may vary widely in format, from self-help or assisted computerized training to virtual reality or applications for smartphones. Some tools that may be helpful for mental health were specifically designed for that goal, whereas others were not. Gamification of computer-related products and games with a numeric format tend to reduce the gap between games and computers tools and increase the conceptual synergy in such fields. Games and computer design share an opportunity for creativity and innovation to help create, specifically design, and assess preventive or therapeutic tools. Computers and games share a design conception that allows innovative approaches to overcome barriers of the real world by creating their own rules. Yet, despite the potential interest in such tools to improve treatment of mental disorders and to help prevent them, the field remains understudied and information is under-disseminated in clinical practice. Some studies have shown, however, that there is potential interest and acceptability of tools that support various vehicles, rationales, objectives, and formats. These tools include traditional games (e.g., chess games), popular electronic games, board games, computer-based interventions specifically designed for psychotherapy or cognitive training, virtual reality, apps for smartphones, and so forth. Computers and games may offer a true opportunity to develop, assess, and disseminate new prevention and treatment tools for mental health and well-being. Currently, there is a strong need for state-of-the-art information to answer questions such as the following: Why develop such tools for mental health and well-being? What are the potential additions to traditional treatments? What are the best strategies or formats to improve the possible impact of these tools? Are such tools useful as a first treatment step? What is the potential of a hybrid model of care that combines traditional approaches with games and/or computers as tools? What games and applications have already been designed and studied? What is the evidence from previous studies? How can such tools be successfully designed for mental health and well-being? What is rewarding or attractive for patients in using such treatments? What are the worldwide developments in the field? Are some protocols under development? What are the barriers and challenges related to such developments? How can these tools be assessed, and how can the way that they work, and for whom, be measured? Are the potential benefits of such products specific, or can these additions be attributed to nonspecific factors? What are the users’ views on such tools? What are the possible links between such tools and social networks? Is there a gap between evidence-based results and market development? Are there any quality challenges? What future developments and studies are needed in the field?
