Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a discussion of the strain rate history effects that occur during the deformation of body-centered-cubic (BCC) metals. It is divided into two parts: a brief review of previous work, which also includes some new data, followed by an analysis of material behavior based on previous and new results. The review discusses early experiments on steels and other BCC metals in which interrupted tests were performed. These tests consist of loading initially at one strain rate, unloading, and reloading at a second strain rate, either higher or lower than the first. Early experiments of this type had revealed a substantial difference in response between BCC and face-centered-cubic (FCC) metals. The review also includes results of incremental strain rate tests with large jumps in strain rate, augmented by a series of experiments designed to study strain rate history effects in steel. The latter consist of incremental tests performed on specimens of an AISI 1020 hot-rolled steel over the temperature range 83 K

Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in coopera tion with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army, and the scientific community. The proceedings of this conference, entitled MATERIAL BEHAVIOR UNDER HIGH STRESS AND ULTRAHIGH LOADING RATES, will be published in two parts. The topics covered in the present volume include dynamic plasticity, adiabatic shear/localized deformation, and dynamic fracture mechanics. Papers dealing with ordnance applica tions, projectile launch environment, and recent work-in-progress will appear as an AMMRC Technical Report and will have more limited distribution in accordance with recent Army guidelines. The Conference Chairmen are particularly grateful to the members of the Program Committee. We wish also to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. Charles Polley of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, Mr. Robert Sell, Ms. Helen Brown DeMascio, and Ms. Mary Ann Holmquist of Syracuse University throughout the con ference planning stages and the publication of the text. Book excerpt: A constitutive relation is developed to describe the grain size, temperature and strain rate dependence of the stress required for the essentially elastic twinning of body centered cubic (bcc) metals at low temperatures. The relation is derived from a description of the bulk material strain produced by twinning and, also, from specifying on the basis of a thermal activation analysis the number of twins and the twinning nucleation rate. Two natural consequences of this development for bcc metals are that twins must be nucleated by pre-twinning slip and that twinning and brittle fracture are predicted to occur under very similar circumstances. These are normal experimental observations. (Author).

Book excerpt: Many important industrial applications incline toward better understanding of the constitutive properties of matter. Nowadays, the development of measurement possibilities, even in nanoscale, allows for multiscale formulations that drive to the more sophisticated models used in continuum mechanics. These phenomenological models are particularly important and useful for solutions of very concrete initial boundary value problems. Our interests are focused mainly on detailed descriptions of material behavior that depend not only on simple stress-strain relationships but also includes the strong influence of loading type, which introduces temperature, strain rate dependence, fracture, etc. Understanding these physics phenomena is of fundamental importance for successful and responsible computations. In particular, using the popular commercial programs requires deep understanding of constitutive formulations and their restrictions. These lectures are addressed to industrial users who are responsible for making crucial decisions in design, as well as, to young scientists who work on new models that describe the behavior of materials which also account the new influences and reflect the complexity of the material behavior. At the end, let me express my gratitude to the lecturers of the CISM course No. 328 on “Advances in Constitutive Relations Applied in Computer Codes”, held in Udine in July 2007, who finally prepared the included materials. Unfortunately, during the preparation and collecting papers for this book, our friend and colleague Prof. Janusz R. Klepaczko passed away. This is a very big loss for the society of mechanics.

Book excerpt: A conference on Metallurgical Effects at High Strain Rates was held at Albuquerque, New Mexico, February 5 through 8, 1973, under joint sponsorship of Sandia Laboratories and the Physical Metallurgy Committee of The Metallurgical Society of AIME. This book presents the written proceedings of the meeting. The purpose of the conference was to gather scientists from diverse disciplines and stimulate interdisciplinary discussions on key areas of materials response at high strain rates. In this spirit, it was similar to one of the first highly successful con ferences on this subject held in 1960, in Estes Park, Colorado, on The Response of Metals to High Velocity Deformation. The 1973 conference was able to demonstrate rather directly the increased understanding of high strain rate effects in metals that has evolved over a period of roughly 12 years. In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of the meeting, the first day was devoted to a tutorial session of invited papers to provide attendees of diverse backgrounds with a common basis of understanding. Sessions were then held with themes centered around key areas of the high strain rate behavior of metals.

Application of the model to the deformation of fcc metals and alloys is illustrated, with an emphasis on the behavior at high strain rates. Preliminary results in pure iron and 4340 steel are also presented. Deformation twinning is observed in iron samples deformed in the Hopkinson pressure bar. The influence of twinning on the proposed constitutive is discussed. 11 refs., 8 figs.

The international conference upon which this book is based had as its major objectives the acceleration of progress in the field of high-strain rate deformation and fabrication, including applications, by providing a forum for the exchange of state-of-the art information on the metallurgical effects of high strain-rate deformation and fabrication; and the organization of this informa tion into a timely and coherent body of knowledge focused around significant areas and applications. This volume is a manifestation of these objectives. In addition, the contents of this book were organized to provide for a somewhat logical perspective of the fundamentals, development, and state-of-the-art applications of high strain-rate and shock phenomena.

Book excerpt: The objective of this program has been to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of high-rate plastic deformation of metals. Single crystal specimens of an fcc metal (Cu) and a bcc metal (Nb) were deformed; the macroscopic yielding behavior was noted for each material as a function of strain rate, and the structures of the deformed crystals were studied by metallographic techniques. In addition to the single-crystal work, a study was made of the character of slip bands in polycrystalline iron and a mild steel as a function of temperature. This permitted comparisons to be made between the behavior of different bcc metals. (Author).
