Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a resounding call in Hebrews, which we cannot forget without going astray: "Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach" (13:13). This is a summons to serve Christ the Redeemer-King fully and faithfully, without compromise. In our time, it calls for a break, not only with the prevailing culture of humanistic statism and its messianic claims and pretensions, but also a wayward church that has made itself the handmaiden to Christ's enemies. When James, in his epistle, says that faith without works is dead, he tells us that faith is not a mere matter of words, but it is of necessity a matter of life. We are dead men if we no longer can breathe, and we are spiritually dead if our faith is unaccompanied by works. Too many churches are like graveyards because too many members have no living faith. "Pure religion and undefiled" requires Christian charity and action. Anything short of this is a self-delusion. James's letter is a corrective the church needs badly. Jude similarly recalls us to Jesus Christ's apostolic commission, "Remember ye the words which have been spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ" (v. 17). Jude's letter is usually classified as an apocalyptic tract, but we cannot forget that all the Bible speaks of a division between fallen and redeemed humanity, between the saved and the lost, of the necessity for a new creation beginning with us, and of the inescapable triumph of the Kingdom of God.

For believers who have grown weary or disillusioned with their Christian commitment, the letter to the Hebrews offers much practical assistance. Book Hebrews James

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Hebrews James written by Christopher Church and published by Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentar. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his commentary on the Letter to the Hebrews, New Testament scholar Edgar McKnight explores the two aspects of Hebrews as covenant-the appeal to the perfection and finality of Jesus Christ and the exhortation to faithfulness based on that appeal. He also highlights the interpretative strategies of the author-strategies that are often strange to modern readers. By bringing the ancient text into the world of present readers and to take readers back to the world of Hebrews, we are able to frame the author's treatment of the problems of our spiritual ancestors from the perspective of our modern world and problems presented in our pilgrimage. In his accompanying commentary on the Letter of James, New Testament scholar Christopher Church represents the letter as something of a biblical and historical fossil, a surviving representative of a once-flourishing Jewish Christianity, the living voice of a theological "dead end." The Letter of James exposes a form of early Christianity distinct from the Pauline line that later predominated. In the picture that is created of this early Christian community, we find concerns over ethical responsibility and social justice that still serve to define Christian communities today.Written by accomplished scholars with all students of Scripture in mind, this innovative new commentary series is designed to make quality Bible study more accessible. Pastors, professors and students of Scripture are discovering that this commentary is a wonderful new tool for enhancing interpretation.

Book excerpt: You don't have to be Jewish to understand this fascinating book, however, religious Jews will be intrigued by the disclosure of their own historical record that clearly points to Jesus as their long-awaited Messiah. For all readers, this Study Guide is an effective study tool to discover the richness of the life and work of Jesus Christ. The Old Covenant depended on temporary measures and human efforts which were superseded by Jesus Christ and the New Covenant. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Son of God Himself, provides all that is necessary for mankind to come to God the Father without works or ritual demanded by the Mosaic Law. Simply by believing and trusting in what Jesus accomplished, believers experience righteousness and can begin developing maturity as valued members of God's family. Hebrews: A Study Guide for LIFE helps the reader understand Jewish references that are often obscure to Gentile readers. This book of Hebrews provides a critical link between the Old and New Testaments by examining the heroes and rituals of the Old Testament, and demonstrating the superiority of Jesus to each person and practice that was valued under Judaism. This Study Guide for LIFE directs readers through the complexities of this epistle by a three-prong approach to explain what the text says, what it means and how to apply it to their lives. This is done by: 1) offering explanations of our current understanding of the more difficult passages; 2) asking readers questions that can be answered directly from the text to focus attention on specific aspects of the prophecy; and 3) asking probing questions that encourage readers to examine their own lives with the truth that the author reveals. The Study Guide is appropriate for the study efforts of individuals, small groups or teachers preparing to explain this book. Whether you are a curious seeker or a professional minister, the Study Guide for LIFE will direct your studies into the heart of the book of Hebrews, but also to the very heart of Jesus Christ Himself.
