Book excerpt: On 24 October 1964, the Republic of Zambia was formed, replacing the territory which had formerly been known as Northern Rhodesia. Fifty years on, Andrew Sardanis provides a sympathetic but critical insider's account of Zambia, from independence to the present. He paints a stark picture of Northern Rhodesia at decolonisation and the problems of the incoming government, presented with an immense uphill task of rebuilding the infrastructure of government and administration - civil service, law, local government and economic development. As a friend and colleague of many of the most prominent names in post-independence Zambia - from the presidencies of founding leader Kenneth Kaunda to the incumbent Michael Sata - Sardanis uses his unique eyewitness experience to provide an inside view of a country in transition.

Book excerpt: During its long history, Ngambe Hospital Mission on the Zambezi River has hosted missionaries of all kinds--dedicated French nuns in long habits, hard-working English doctors, efficient German nurses. A few were not so diligent. In the 1920s, a Swiss physician spent one day at the mission, declared the heat unbearable, and left. Yet ten years later, an Italian doctor, a woman, arrived and stayed eighteen years, mostly subsisting on fish from the river and corn-bread mush called nshima, the same diet as the villagers, members of the Lozi tribe. Skip to the mid-nineties, the time of these stories. The Ngambe villagers are now Zambians, and still of the Lozi tribe. The missionaries--mostly British or American--tend to come and go, rather than staying until their tombstones are erected in the mission cemetery as did their predecessors. Despite these changes, they, like their earlier counterparts, have come with an earnest desire to do good works. And they, probably like the French nuns and German nurses, find that getting along with each other is often harder than giving vaccinations or leading a prayer. Besides doing their jobs, the missionaries have a chance to pick up some Lozi words, to learn the traditions, and ride in a dugout on the Zambezi, the river Dr. Livingstone once navigated. They might visit a game park, home to thousands of elephants and other wild things. They might travel to Lusaka, Zambia's capital, see how the government works, but even if a missionary fails to absorb the culture, another possibility exists--in this remote setting he may learn something new and startling about himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 25 years Bradt’s Zambia Safari Guide has been widely acknowledged as the best guidebook to this African country, and it is now the only dedicated guide to Zambia’s world-renowned safari destinations. Combining in-depth reviews of lodges, camps and other accommodation (from a stately home to a contemporary woven treehouse), detailed descriptions of safari locations and operators, extensive practical details, local insights, a brand new 48-page colour wildlife guide and curated coverage of the main access points of Lusaka and Livingstone, this is the ‘must-have’ guidebook to travel planning and exploring the country’s wildlife-rich safari regions. Lying in the heart of the continent, Zambia is deepest, darkest Africa at its most appealing. Many visitors are drawn initially to the majestic Victoria Falls. Others come for the glory of Zambia’s stellar national parks: the South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi and Kafue. For seasoned safari goers, Zambia is the home of the walking safari; for adventurous travellers, it is about canoeing past hippos on the Lower Zambezi – or diving into a whole new world of freshwater fish in Lake Tanganyika. Experienced travel writers Chris and Susie McIntyre – both Africa experts, with Susie having grown up in Zambia – use their decades of safari experience and in-depth knowledge of the Zambian safari scene to provide accurate, honest and upbeat descriptions, anecdotes and advice. To help readers make informed choices, the authors explain where to find top-quality guiding and detail Zambia’s top spots for wildlife and wilderness (including GPS co-ordinates for those who prefer self-drive holidays). They advise on the best walking safaris plus the ‘silent safaris’ available in electric vehicles and boats, and suggest how best to combine different safari experiences into a fulfilling itinerary in a country where nearly one-third of the land area is reserved for wildlife. Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast or Africa addict, an escapist seeking wilderness or a family craving adventure; and whether you prefer a local operator to make your arrangements or independent travel, Bradt’s Zambia Safari Guide is the perfect travel companion.

Book excerpt: Drive the streets of Nairobi and you are sure to see many matatus colorful minibuses that transport huge numbers of people around the city. Once ramshackle affairs held together with duct tape and wire, matatus today are name-brand vehicles maxed out with aftermarket detailing. They can be stately black or come in extravagant colors, sporting names, slogans, or entire tableaus, with airbrushed portraits of everyone from Kanye West to Barack Obama, of athletes, movie stars, or the most famous face of all: Jesus Christ. In this richly interdisciplinary book, Kenda Mutongi explores the history of the matatu from the 1960s to the present. As Mutongi shows, matatus offer a window onto many socioeconomic and political facets of late-twentieth-century Africa. In their diversity of idiosyncratic designs they express multiple and divergent aspects of Kenyan life including rapid urbanization, organized crime, entrepreneurship, social insecurity, the transition to democracy, chaos and congestion, popular culture, and many others at once embodying both Kenya's staggering social problems and the bright promises of its future. Offering a shining model of interdisciplinary analysis, Mutongi mixes historical, ethnographic, literary, linguistic, and economic approaches to tell the story of the matatu as a powerful expression of the entrepreneurial aesthetics of the postcolonial world.

Book excerpt: A glimpse into the lives of LGBTQ migrants in Johannesburg, in their own words Seeking Sanctuary brings together poignant life stories from fourteen lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) migrants, refugees and asylum seekers living in Johannesburg, South Africa. The stories, diverse in scope, chronicle each narrator’s arduous journey to South Africa, and their corresponding movement towards self-love and self-acceptance. The narrators reveal their personal battles to reconcile their faith with their sexuality and gender identity, often in the face of violent persecution, and how they have carved out spaces of hope and belonging in their new home country. In these intimate testimonies, the narrators’ resilience in the midst of uncertain futures reveal the myriad ways in which LGBT Africans push back against unjust and unequal systems. Seeking Sanctuary makes a critical intervention by showing the complex interplay between homophobia and xenophobia in South Africa, and of the state of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) rights in Africa. By shedding light on the fraught connections between sexuality, faith and migration, this ground-breaking project also provides a model for religious communities who are working towards justice, diversity and inclusion.

Book excerpt: Zambia Home tells the true story of one missionary nurse’s amazing journey in Zambia, Africa, as she grapples with local politics, spiritual warfare, and personal grief. One of the great unsung Christian heroes of our time, Arlene Schuiteman’s story will touch your heart and embolden your spirit to declare the glory of God to the next generation. At age nineteen, Arlene Schuiteman began keeping a journal. That daily discipline continued throughout her life, including thirty-four years of nursing and teaching in three African countries: South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Zambia. She then placed her Africa journals and letters into the hands of her friend, playwright Jeff Barker. He adapted Arlene’s writings into plays, and now they have become a book series: Sioux Center Sudan, Iowa Ethiopia, and Zambia Home. This third book in the trilogy covers the final decade of Arlene’s career, starting with the birth of a nation and passing through the death of Arlene’s mother. Arlene grapples with radically changing infrastructures and the Zambianization of medicine. Then, as she nears the end of her career, the HTLV-3 virus stuns the world. Arlene’s spiritual and emotional journal has never been richer or more complex than this fitting final chapter of her amazing journey. Arlene’s story has the power to transfix, pierce, and heal. This is more than historical record. Here is a winsome saga that declares the power of God to the next generation.

Book Zambia Then And Now

Download or read book Zambia Then And Now written by William Grant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a member of the last generation of British Colonial Service Officers in Africa, the book seeks to place both colonial rulers and their African successors in the context of history and the circumstances of their time, viewing their achievements and failures critically but not unsympathetically and comparing colonial society with that of the independent African country that Northern Rhodesia has become. Colonialism is viewed at the day to day level of the administration of a rural district by four officers and a handful of African district messengers, who worked together without even a telephone to assist them. With a wealth of detail that can only come from experience, Grant’s work makes an important contribution to the understanding of a time, place, period and practices that are only now being considered in a balanced way.
