Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California Schemin'is the remarkable real life story of how two rappers from Dundee pretended to be two rappers from California and duped the record industry out of hundreds of thousands of pounds. Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd - or Silibil N' Brains, as they became known - were two ordinary Scottish boys who shared an extraordinary dream: to become rap superstars. Creating new identities for themselves, they persuaded the music industry that they were the latest hot young talent from California. Silibil N' Brains then lived out that lie for more than two years, securing an enormous record deal with Sony and being catapulted into the industry high-life, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Madonna, Eminem and D12. But, ironically, they could never actually deliver and promote the album that they were paid so much money to put together. As soon as they became famous they would be recognised by anyone who had known them in their former lives in Scotland and the dream would evaporate. As the pressure mounted, there would be disastrous consequences … California Schemin' is a story of incredible highs and terrible lows, of doing whatever it takes to follow your dream.

Book Unlabel

Download or read book Unlabel written by Marc Ecko and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most provocative entrepreneurs of our time, who started Eckō Unltd out of his parents' garage and turned it into a media empire, Marc Eckō reveals his formula for building an authentic brand or business. Marc Eckō began his career by spray-painting t-shirts in the garage of his childhood home in suburban New Jersey. A graffiti artist with no connections and no fashion pedigree, he left the safety net of pharmacy school to start his own company. Armed with only hustle, sweat equity, and creativity, he flipped a $5,000 bag of cash into a global corporation now worth $500 million. Unlabel is a success story, but it's one that shares the bruises, scabs, and gut-wrenching mistakes that every entrepreneur must overcome to succeed. Through his personal prescription for success--the Authenticity Formula--Eckō recounts his many innovations and misadventures in his journey from misfit kid to the CEO. It wasn't a meteoric rise; in fact, it was a rollercoaster that dipped to the edge of bankruptcy and even to national notoriety, but this is an underdog story we can learn from: Ecko's doubling down on the core principles of the brand and his formula for action over talk are all lessons for today's entrepreneurs. Ecko offers a brash message with his inspirational story: embrace pain, take risks, and be yourself. Unlabel demonstrates that, like or not, you are a brand and it's up you to take control of it and create something authentic. Unlabel is a groundbreaking guide to channeling your creativity, finding the courage to defy convention, and summoning the confidence to act and be competitive in any environment"--

Book Twentysomething

Book excerpt: A mother-daughter writing team reports on what's really up with kids today Science writer Robin Marantz Henig and her daughter, journalist Samantha Henig, offer a smart, comprehensive look at what it's really like to be twentysomething—and to what extent it’s different for Millennials than it was for their Baby Boomer parents. The Henigs combine the behavioral science literature for insights into how young people make choices about schooling, career, marriage, and childbearing; how they relate to parents, friends, and lovers; and how technology both speeds everything up and slows everything down. Packed with often-surprising discoveries, Twentysomething is a two-generation conversation that will become the definitive book on being young in our time. "The fullest guide through this territory . . . A densely researched report on the state of middleclass young people today, drawn from several data sources and filtered through a comparative lens." —The New Yorker

Book The Academy of Peculiars Box Set

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over 200,000 words and 3 full-length novels, get your collection of the entire Academy of Peculiar at a 67% discount! Stranger Book 1 Sophie Harper has a secret. A peculiar one. By the time she gets to the Academy for Peculiars, she’s already killed a man. From there, she learns that the superhuman strength she was born with and abandoned because of means she's a peculiar – a human with abnormal DNA - yet that same strength alienates her from her peculiar peers because of its rarity. As she settles into her new home, she makes friends with her dorm mates, stresses out about catching up with schoolwork, and starts dating one of the most popular guys at the academy. Normalcy is what Sophie wants more than anything, but she can’t change the fact that she’s different, even among peculiars. She starts falling for her infuriating trainer, a rugged shifter named Will, despite the fact that it's forbidden. When she finds out there's only one other man with her physical strength, she yearns to learn more about him - yet he's someone everyone refuses to discuss. She starts to realize that being a peculiar means more than just being strong, and that just she shares her ability with her mysterious counterpart, it doesn’t mean he isn’t a threat. Finder, Book 2 Those that aren't lost can't be found. After the whole ordeal at the underground Catalina nightclub, Sophie is ready to forget about everything and enjoy the holidays with Will in Washington. As the weather cools down, things between them heat up. But Sophie is still with Jason, and she can't easily forget that. On top of that, Sophie receives a letter from her parents wanting to meet and asking for her forgiveness. When Jane Cabot, her best friend, is mortally wounded by an unknown assailant, Sophie must question everyone and everything around her in order to bring her best friend to justice. Things don't add up, however, and despite Jane being attacked, Sophie is the true target. When she gets taken by a familiar face, pieces of a puzzle start to fall into place, and she's not sure she wants to be found. Keeper, Book 3 Danger lurks in the most familiar places. When General Arbuckle reveals the peculiar existence to the world, the Academy of Peculiars is forced to close as a way to protect the faculty and students. Sophie Harper is more focused on the fact that her best friend, Jane, may actually be alive than Arbuckle and the United States military. Daryl's older and mental brother, Marvin, is quick to promise Jane's safe return after brokering a deal with Daryl and Ethan, the academy's dean. But something doesn't sit well with Sophie about Marvin, and if Jane wasn't involved, she's certain Daryl wouldn't have trusted his brother. On top of that, a familiar body winds up slaughtered at the academy gates. Now it's up to Sophie to figure out who could have done it and why, while dodging flying bullets and suspicious ex-boyfriends. Will wants nothing more to protect her; Sophie wants nothing more than find her friend - and herself. In the epic conclusion to the Academy of Peculiars Trilogy, Sophie will learn that just because someone is ambitious does not mean they're evil, those that she trusts the most have the power to betray her with relative ease, and the best relationship she can ever hope to have is the one with herself. Book My Way

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Anka
  • Publisher : St. Martin's Press
  • Release : 2013-04-09
  • ISBN : 1250035201
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book My Way written by Paul Anka and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A teen idol of the 1950s who virtually invented the singer/songwriter/heartthrob combination that still tops pop music today, Paul Anka rocketed to fame with a slew of hits-from "Diana" to "Put Your Head on my Shoulder"-that earned him a place touring with the major stars of his era, including Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly. He wrote Holly's last hit, and just missed joining the rocker on his final, fatal plane flight. Anka also stepped in front of the camera in the teen beach-party movie era, scoring the movies and romancing their starlets, including Annette Funicello. When the British invasion made his fans swoon for a new style of music-and musician--Anka made sure he wasn't conquered. A rapier-canny businessman and image-builder who took his career into his own hands-just as he had from the very beginning, swiping his mother's car at fourteen to drive himself, underage, to his first gigs in Quebec-Anka toured the world until he could return home in triumph. A charter member of the Rat Pack, he wrote the theme music for The Tonight Show as well as his friend Frank Sinatra's anthem "My Way". By the 1970s, a multi-decade string of pop chart-toppers, including "Puppy Love" and "(You're) Having My Baby", cemented his status as an icon. My Way is bursting with rich, rollicking stories of the business and the people in Anka's life: Elizabeth Taylor, Dodi Fayed, Tom Jones, Michael Jackson, Adnan Khashoggi, Little Richard, Brooke Shields, Johnny Roselli, Sammy Davis, Jr., Brigitte Bardot, Barnum & Bailey Circus acrobats, and many more. Anka is forthcoming, funny and smart as a whip about the business he's been in for almost six decades. My Way moves from New York to Vegas, from the casino stage to backstages all over the world. It's the most entertaining autobiography of the year.

Book Another Music

    Book Details:
  • Author : John McCormick
  • Publisher : Transaction Publishers
  • Release : 2011-12-31
  • ISBN : 1412812127
  • Pages : 263 pages

Download or read book Another Music written by John McCormick and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the essays in this book attest, in a time of specialization John McCormick chose diversification, a choice determined by a life spent in many occupations and many countries. After his five years in the U. S. Navy in the Second World War, the academy beckoned by way of the G. I. Bill, graduate training, and a career in teaching. Prosperity in the American university at the time meant setting up as a "Wordsworth man," a "Keats man," or a "Dr. Johnson man": all chilling to the author. He chose self-exile in which he disguised himself as an "Americanist" saleable in Europe, and lectured happily in comparative studies: literature, history, and philosophy. Thus the broad range of this volume, both in subject matter and in the span of time it covers. The essays are divided into three sections. First are general and personal essays on a variety of topics, followed by work on individual writers, and third, writings on criticism and theory. A section on Santayana reflects his eight years of research for Santayana's biography. The writings on Spain and toreo (bullfighting) result from another long-held interest, together with the author's attempt to alter some of the romantic nonsense about the running of the bulls in Pamplona, too often the entire substance of what the general public knows about Spain. McCormick has long been convinced that without knowledge of bullfighting, the foreigner cannot comprehend arcane and wonderful aspects of the Spanish character. The coda, "Another Music," is an old man's attempt to solve the mysterious algebra of how the world turns now, and how the young appear to the aged. While the volume is diverse in its range of writers--from Whitman in America to Santayana in Europe, taken as a collectivity, these essays provide a sense of the grandeur as well as the decadent in twentieth century politics and aesthetics alike. Written with the literary taste and political non-conformity that still characterizes McCormick, the volume is a treat for the specialist (perhaps) and for the generalist (certainly).
