Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of the Year by the Los Angeles Public Library This hilarious, colorful portrait of a sex worker navigating life in modern Morocco introduces a promising new literary voice. Thirty-four-year-old prostitute Jmiaa reflects on the bustling world around her with a brutal honesty, but also a quick wit that cuts through the drudgery. Like many of the women in her working-class Casablanca neighborhood, Jmiaa struggles to earn enough money to support herself and her family—often including the deadbeat husband who walked out on her and their young daughter. While she doesn’t despair about her profession like her roommate, Halima, who reads the Quran between clients, she still has to maintain a delicate balance between her reality and the “respectable” one she paints for her own more conservative mother. This daily grind is interrupted by the arrival of an aspiring young director, Chadlia, whom Jmiaa takes to calling “Horse Mouth.” Chadlia enlists Jmiaa’s help on a film project, initially just to make sure the plot and dialogue are authentic. But when she’s unable to find an actress who’s right for the starring role, she turns again to Jmiaa, giving the latter an incredible opportunity for a better life. In her breakout debut novel, Meryem Alaoui creates a vibrant picture of the day-to-day challenges faced by working people in Casablanca, which they meet head-on with resourcefulness and resilience.

Download or read book Straight from the Horse s Ass written by Lee Hughes and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Kiwi cowboy and his stubborn horse (nicknamed ‘Goddammityou-sonavabitch’) ride through America. Here’s how an ‘averagely dumb city-slicker’ looking for something to do on his summer holiday saw Dances With Wolves and was seduced by the lure of the West. Together with a small stubborn horse rescued from a career in the Belgian sausage industry, he travelled 3500 miles down the Rocky Mountains from Canada to Mexico. When Lee Hughes began, he didn’t know how to ride, and his horse, Spice (also known by his Indian name of ‘Goddammityou-sonavabitch’), wasn’t giving lessons either. Their relationship wasn’t exactly a partnership, more of an armed truce, but nevertheless they crossed rivers and deserts, mountains and plains, dodged buffalo and bears, moose and mountain lions, met policemen and preachers, cowboys and Indians, Democrats and all manner of respectable folk as well. They made it to Mexico only nine months late. Bones were broken, six-guns roared in anger and quicksands were explored the hard way. There were feasts, famines and some world-class drinking. Good deeds were done and dark ones concealed. And a good horse died. Around wintertime Lee and Spice bluffed their way on to a ranch and played at being a cowboy and a cowpony. 7000 cattle went along with the joke until summer, and then they headed south again, saddlebags bulging with rolled oats, baked beans and Cheez Whiz. What started out as just a summer holiday, grew until it filled a year with excitement and laughter, panic and peril and, ultimately, became this ‘mostly true story without too many lies or bits left out’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ' "When you touch a Lipizzaner, you're touching history," Westerman was once told. His elegant book offers fascinating proof' Financial Times Frank Westerman explores the history of Lipizzaners, an extraordinary troop of pedigree horses bred as personal mounts for the Emperor of Austria-Hungary. Following the bloodlines of the stud book, he reconstructs the story of four generations of imperial steed as they survive the fall of the Habsburg Empire, two world wars and the insane breeding experiments conducted under Hitler, Stalin and Ceausescu. But what begins as a fairytale becomes a chronicle of the quest for racial purity. Carrying the reader across Europe, from imperial stables and stud farms to the controversial gene labs of today, Westerman asks, if animal breeders are so good at genetic engineering, why do attempts to perfect the human strain always end in tragedy?
Download or read book The Speed of Dark written by Ian Duhig and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-07-12 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ian Duhig's The Speed of Dark is structured around his astonishing reworking of the text of Le Roman de Fauvel, a medieval text that railed against the corruption of the 12th-century French court and church. In Duhig's hands, however, the tale of the power-mad horse-king Fauvel gains a terrifying and almost prophetic contemporary relevance, and is identified with more recent crusades, crazed ambitions and insatiable greeds. Elsewhere Duhig's many admirers will be delighted by his new ballads and elegies, his erudite high jinks and his low gags - with which he builds on the new imaginative territory he staked out in The Lammas Hireling to such universal acclaim. The Speed of Dark again shows Duhig as one the most capacious and brilliant minds in contemporary poetry. 'The most original poet of his generation' Carol Ann Duffy, Guardian 'His poetry is learned, rude, elegant, sly and funny, mixing gilded images, belly-laughs and esoteric lore about language (including Irish), art, history, politics and children's word-games' Ruth Padel, Independent on Sunday 'Duhig telescopes topical allusions, scholarly references and coarse humour into tightly-shaped, surreal poems which burst open with explosive moral force' Alan Brownjohn, Sunday Times
