Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book bears the hallmark of Open University Press texts. It is well laid out and nicely produced. It manages a good balance between textbook and cutting edge research… The book is impressive in its command of a wide range of writings on sexuality, gender, masculinity and schooling.” - Educational Review "Secondary school teachers, principals and school counsellors would be the primary audience for this book, although youth workers and other workers with adolescent males should also find the boys' perceptions of school and adolescent culture of great interest and considerable use." -Youth Studies Australia This book focuses on the impact and effects of masculinities on the lives of boys at school. Through interviews with boys from diverse backgrounds, the authors explore the various ways in which boys define and negotiate their masculinities at school. The following questions and issues are addressed: What does it mean to be a 'normal' boy and who decides this? How do issues of masculinity impact on boys from culturally diverse backgrounds, indigenous boys, those with disabilities and boys of diverse sexualities? What issues of power impact on these boys' lives and relationships at school? What effects do these issues have on boys' learning at school? Through problematizing and interrogating the question of what makes a boy a boy, this fascinating title offers recommendations and indicates future directions for working with boys in school.

Book The Gang s All Queer

Download or read book The Gang s All Queer written by Vanessa R. Panfil and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people believe that gangs are made up of violent thugs who are in and out of jail, and who are hyper-masculine and heterosexual. Vanessa Panfil introduces us to a different world. Meet gay gang members - sometimes referred to in popular culture as "homo thugs" - whose gay identity complicates criminology's portrayal and representation of gangs, gang members, and gang life. In vivid detail, Panfil provides an in-depth understanding of how gay gang members construct and negotiate both masculine and gay identities through crime and gang membership. She draws from interviews with over 50 gay gang- and crime-involved young men in Columbus, Ohio, the majority of whom are men of color in their late teens and early twenties, as well as on-the-ground ethnographic fieldwork with men who are in gay, hybrid, and straight gangs. Panfil provides an eye-opening portrait of how even members of straight gangs are connected to a same-sex oriented underground world. Most of these young men still present a traditionally masculine persona and voice deeply-held affection for their fellow gang members. They also fight with their enemies, many of whom are in rival gay gangs. Most come from impoverished, 'rough' neighborhoods, and seek to defy negative stereotypes of gay and Black men as deadbeats, though sometimes through illegal activity. Some are still closeted to their fellow gang members and families, yet others fight to defend members of the gay community, even those who they deem to be "fags, " despite distaste for these flamboyant members of the community.

Book As Normal As Possible

Download or read book As Normal As Possible written by Ching Yau and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays showcase emerging and established scholars working in sociology, ethnography, public health, cultural activism, and film studies. The book poses new and exciting challenges to queer studies and other disciplines. It also demonstrates that the study of Chinese sexuality is an emergent field, and highlights the ways that different individuals and communities - including male sex workers, transsexual subjects, lesbians, and Asian migrants-negotiate modernity and power structures in many Chinese contexts. Yau Ching teaches cultural studies at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. She is the author of five books in Chinese and one in English. "This is the first sustained collection of writings by established and young scholars on how sexualities are negotiated in Hong Kong and China. It is innovative and exciting, providing grounded empirical fieldwork as well as critical applications from the wider fields of literary historical studies, public health, cultural and film studies. It demonstrates the study of Chinese sexuality and queer modernity in Asia as emergent fields emanating from many disciplines."

And I'm pretty sure he loves me back... even though he's straight. When I first met Carter King, I knew he was something special. I imagined us being together, and we are, but only as friends. Best friends! I'm trying to be cool with that, even though I know he has secrets, and there have definitely been mixed signals. I don't want a crush to ruin what we already have. Then again, if there's any chance that we can be together, it's worth the risk, because Carter could be the love of my life. Or he might be the boy who breaks my heart. Straight Boy is Jay Bell's emotional successor to his critically acclaimed Something Like... series. This full-length novel tells a story of friendship and love while exploring the blurry line that often divides the two.
