Download or read book Advances in Hydroscience written by Ven Te Chow and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Hydroscience, Volume 4 covers selected topics encompassing several areas of special interest in hydroscience, including naval architecture, water waves, subsurface water, engineering hydraulics, and stochastic hydrology. This volume is composed of seven chapters, and begins with a summary of the basic principles and theories involved in hovering craft operating over water, which should be of interest to naval architects who may design such vehicles for special purposes. The succeeding chapters deal with the significance of soil moisture theory in the design of foundations and land drainage systems, as well as the developments in understanding the theory of wind-generated waves. These topics are followed by discussions on the mode of operation and different types of hydraulic jumps and the basic probability concepts of stochastic reservoir theory. The final chapter the fundamentals of surface winds, wind fields, and wind stress and their role in formation of storm surge. This book is of value to hydrologists, naval architects, agronomists, and agricultural civil engineers.

Download or read book Flood Issues in Contemporary Water Management written by J. Marsalek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997 disastrous flooding running through the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany took the lives of a great number of people and caused economic damage estimated in tens of billions of dollars. Flooding of the Yangtze river in 1998 killed more than 3000 people, dislocated 230 million souls, and caused direct damage of more than $ 45 billion. Both the general public and the experts are asking what we can learn from these recent events to reduce loss of life and flood damage. The 1997 floods were dealt with by experts from the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany, who presented timely reports on combatting floods, both success stories and shortcomings. This experience is further extended by reports from experts drawn from 13 other countries, developing a broad overview of flood risk management, covering the ecosystem approach to flood management, including socioeconomic issues, flood impacts on water quality, human health, and natural ecosystems.

Download or read book Pearson Edexcel A level Geography Student Guide 1 Physical Geography written by Cameron Dunn and published by Hodder Education. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforce understanding throughout the course with clear topic summaries and sample questions and answers to help students target higher grades. Written by experienced subject experts Cameron Dunn and Michael Witherick, this Student Guide is divided into two key sections - content guidance, and sample questions and answers. Content guidance will: - Develop understanding of key concepts and terminology in key physical geography topics tectonic processes and hazards, landscape systems, processes and change (glaciated and coastal), the water cycle and water insecurity, and the carbon cycle and energy security. - Consolidate knowledge with 'knowledge check questions' at the end of each topic and answers in the back of the book. Sample questions and answers will: - Build understanding of the different question types, so that students can approach each question with confidence. - Enable students to target top grades in their exam paper with sample answers and commentary explaining exactly why marks have been awarded.

Download or read book Sea Level Variability and Change written by Ivan D. Haigh and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2015 we held a workshop on the beautiful island of Mallorca, Spain with a focus on sea level variability and change. Over 120 sea level experts from around the world attended this workshop, from a range of different disciplines. The main aims of the workshop were to: 1.) Evaluate the current state-of-knowledge of sea level science; 2.) Identify gaps and unresolved questions in any aspect of sea level science; and 3.) Design future research to address these issue. All aspects of sea level changes were covered, from global to regional, observations and modelling, processes driving mean sea level changes and extremes, from the geological scale to the instrumental era and future projections and including impacts on the coastal zones. This E-Book presents papers that came out of that workshop. Overall, these papers illustrate the multi-disciplinary nature of sea level research, cross-cutting many fields of research including: oceanography, meteorology, geology, coastal morphodynamics, engineering and the social-economic aspects. Collectively, theses articles represent an interesting range of perspectives and original studies that contribute to understanding the dynamic nature of sea level and its impacts across a wide range of time and space scales. Enjoy reading them!
