Abandoned by his mother at birth, Jack was brought up by foster parents. When working in a large country house, he comes across a sports trophy engraved with a name that re-ignites a deep-held desire to try to find his birth family, something he failed to achieve in an earlier attempt. Using a different approach this time, he makes contact with a half-brother. Unknown to Jack, his relative has a shady past involving convictions for minor crimes, which inadvertently draw in Jack. The connection with his half sibling leads to a complicated series of events involving a corrupt Member of Parliament and his equally corrupt nephew. The police use Jack to further their investigations into the MP and his nephew. It turns out that both men’s crimes are far more serious than originally thought. Russian spies are only part of his troubles as Jack becomes involved in a complicated series of events that threaten his life.

It is a symbolic microcosm of challenging issues that Africa has and must address. Can Africa reverse the dark odds and can it move towards a united and integrated whole? The book explores the untold events and negative trends on the economic, social, political, humanitarian and environmental scene in Africa which leaves the international community perceiving Africa through darkened lenses. It tells the dark tragedy of a people ? the economy of alienation and disempowerment as it also injects an encouraging metaphor that the key to the solution of Africas perennial socio-economic-politico transformation rests primarily and decidedly in the hands of African governments and people. Africans are challenged to stop tinkering with the problem but take a progressive Afro-centric approach to effectively address the fate of democracy, management and development in Africa which are closely intertwined. A wide range scope of issues is covered in the preface and the various chapters. The book puts the reader and people in the mode of the tenacity of maintaining a vision of remaining live to the ideals of a progressive Afro-centric agenda that continuing fighting for African development. Book excerpt: The future of all mankind and the planet he inhabits seems to be on a collision course for disaster. Nuclear proliferation and hostility between nations foster consistent rumors of impending doom among prognosticators, politicians, and preachers. What will the world be like a generation from now? Will there be peace on earth? Will there be more tension and more predictions of gloom and doom? Some have even suggested there will only be the eerie silence of a post-apocalyptic world. Can we know what the future holds? In a much-debated book of the Bible there seem to be some answers to the questions about earth's final days. The Book of Revelation, for Christians and non-Christians alike, has been more thoroughly scrutinized than any other New Testament writing. However, a close inspection of this book reveals insight into the future that can found in no other writing. This is no attempt to predict the future. It is an attempt to describe future events, whenever they occur, in more detail than is possible without a close inspection of Revelation chapters 4 through 16. In "Stormclouds on the Horizon: A Comprehensive View of Earth's Last Days", special attention is given to a future period commonly referred to as the Tribulation. The ancient prophet John the Beloved is privileged to see these future days revealed before his eyes. Unlike other books on this subject, Stormclouds reveals two viewpoints on this seven-year period given to John in this one prophetic vision.

Book Storm Clouds over the Pacific 1931 1941

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An excellent primer about World War II in Asia prior to the involvement of the United States”—part one of a fascinating history trilogy (New York Journal of Books). War in the Far East is a trilogy of books offering the most complete narrative yet written about the Pacific Theater of World War II, and the first truly international treatment of the epic conflict. Historian Peter Harmsen weaves together a complex and revealing narrative, including facets of the war that are often overlooked in historic narratives. He explores the war in subarctic conditions on the Aleutians; details the mass starvations in China, Indochina, and India; and offers a range of perspectives on the war experience, from the Oval Office to the blistering sands of Peleliu. Storm Clouds Over the Pacific begins the story long before Pearl Harbor, showing how the war can only be understood if ancient hatreds and long-standing geopolitics are taken into account. Harmsen demonstrates how Japan and China’s ancient enmity led to increased tensions in the 1930s, which, in turn, exploded into conflict in 1937. The battles of Shanghai and Nanjing were followed by the Battle of Taierzhuang in 1938, China’s only major victory. A war of attrition continued up to 1941, the year when Japan made the momentous decision to pursue all-out war. The infamous attack on Pearl Harbor catapulted the United States into the war, as the Japanese also overran British and Dutch territories throughout the western Pacific.

Book Crossroads to Islam

Download or read book Crossroads to Islam written by Yehuda D. Nevo and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this controversial exploration of the early history of Islam, archaeologist Yehuda D. Nevo and researcher Judith Koren present a revolutionary theory of the origins and development of the Islamic state and religion. Whereas most works on this subject derive their view of the history of this period from the Muslim literature, Crossroads to Islam also examines important types of evidence hitherto neglected: the literature of the local (Christian) population, archaeological excavations, numismatics, and especially rock inscriptions. These analyses lay the foundation for a radical view of the development of Islam.According to Nevo and Koren, the evidence suggests that the Arabs were in fact pagan when they assumed power in the regions formerly ruled by the Byzantine Empire. They contend that the Arabs took control almost without a struggle, because Byzantium had effectively withdrawn from the area long before. After establishing control, the new Arab elite adopted a simple monotheism influenced by Judaeo-Christianity, which they encountered in their newly acquired territories, and gradually developed it into the Arab religion. Not until the mid-8th century was this process completed. This interpretation of the evidence corroborates the view of other scholars, who on different grounds propose that Islam and the canonized version of the Koran were preceded by a long period of development. This new view turns on its head the traditional history of the rise of Islam, which claims that Islam began with Muhammad in Mecca and Medina around 622; then spread throughout Arabia under his charismatic leadership; and finally, after Muhammad''s death (632), inspired his followers to conquer widespread territories both in the East and West. By contrast, Nevo and Koren suggest that the rise of the Arab state created a need for a state religion, eventually called Islam. This absorbing and controversial rethinking of Islam''s early history is must reading for students and scholars of Islamic history and anyone interested in the origins of the world''s second largest religion.

Drawing on the tradition of Christian mysticism, the author offers a series of meditations on various aspects of the natural world, including oceans and prairies, weather patterns, the changing of seasons, animal and plant communities, and the ways humans engage with them. He sees the intellectual and spiritual roots of the modern ecological crisis in a turn of thought coming from the Enlightenment that makes the value of the natural world a function of its utility, and he offers a way out that is centered in prayer and humility.

Book excerpt: It is the fourteenth century, and after finding the survivors who have been taken from their island home and sold into slavery to a Sultan’s son in a far distant realm, Avalon is critically wounded in a fierce battle. His poisoned wounds leave him in a deep coma. While waiting for Avalon to recover, Genevieve and Ameliana purchase the slaves’ freedom and prepare the Ghost Runner for the upcoming voyage to return the islanders to their ancestral lands so they can rebuild their lives. The sorcerer Caligastia follows them on their journey on his black-sailed ship using a homing device, a pyramid-shaped crystal that was hidden in the hold of Ghost Runner, but when it was discovered and jettisoned over the side, it implodes in the ocean’s deep depths with such catastrophic force it caused a massive tidal wave. Upon reaching the islanders’ archipelago, they set about the laborious task of rebuilding the derelict town. Both of Avalon’s wives, who are soon due to give birth, decide to take Ghost Runner to the neighboring archipelago where bird life abounds and turtles lay their eggs on a small sandy quay. The egg hunt is ill-fated when a hurricane appears over the horizon. Not wanting to be surrounded by dangerous reef inside the lagoon when the storm hits, Genevieve decides to sail Ghost Runner back to the safety of their home anchorage but with disastrous results. Ten years came and went on their island paradise when, early one morning, a tsunami sweeps across the archipelago and in minutes destroys all they knew and love as they are swept out to sea amongst the debris. Fate intervenes when they are plucked from the storm-tossed and littered ocean by the one man who can lead them back to Avalon’s homeland thousands of miles to the east. After many adventures of sailing through the hurricane season to take advantage of favorable winds to blow them thousands of miles to the east, they arrive at their destination and leave their beloved schooner to travel overland for many months on horseback into the formidable and distant Alps. The expedition is fraught with danger as snow leopards stalk and attack the horses. Not only do they have to contend with snow leopards, wolf packs, treacherous snow-covered trails, and precipitous ravines in the rugged Alps, but a relentless enemy is lying in wait to ambush them to ensure they never reach the kingdom of Nebadon.
