Among these friends was Charles W. Eldridge, formerly of the publishing house of Thayer and Eldridge, Boston, and afterward connected with the Treasury Department at Washington. The preparation of the volume for the press was nearly completed at the time of Mr. Eldridge's death in 1903, and the publishers of Heroes of the Storm desire to express their Obligation to the service which Mr. Eldridge's affectionate admiration for his friend led him to perform. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wrack of the Storm The reader taking up this volume will, for the first time in the work of one who hitherto had cursed no man, find words of hatred and malediction. I would gladly have avoided them, for I hold that he who takes upon himself to write pledges himself to say nothing that can derogate from the respect and love which we owe to all men. I have had to utter these words; and I am as much surprised as saddened at what I have been constrained to say by the force of events and of truth. I loved Germany and numbered friends there, who now, dead or living, are alike dead to me. I thought her great and upright and generous; and to me she was ever kindly and hospitable. But there are crimes that obliterate the past and close the future. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Track of a Storm I had been to Paris on business of the bank, and was on my way home. I am not fond of travelling at the best of times; and the end Of November is not, as a rule, the best of times for travelling. The rule was not proved by November, 1832. It was no exception in the matter of November weather. I don't like bad English weather, but I like bad French weather even worse. I was glad to get into the Dover packet. I was positively relieved to hear the good, hearty swear ing Of Christian sailors once more. The passage was cold, but it was not tedious, and by eleven o'clock that night I was enjoying a glass of hot brandy and water before a big fire in the snuggest corner of the Ship. But the con trary extreme seems to beget quite as many malcon tents. In great cities, the weather is accepted at its day's worth, without much thought of the results. Sunshine is sunshirie, let the morrow be what it may. But small towns. Look further because afraid to fare worse. Nor are village gossips to be deceived into the enjoyments of a May-day in December, at the cost of future fevers and rheumatisms, and the chance of being frostbitten by the New Year. Download or read book The Snow Storm Classic Reprint written by Esther M. Bourne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Snow Storm Lastly - though not least - That I may express some sentiments in rela tion to a subject of deep import to the rising generation, if not to that which is now upon the stage of action, and give them a more per manent position than through the ordinary channels of the Press. Almost every man and woman has a vivid recollection of the terrors of school. Days; of the acts of injustice, tyranny and cruelty inflicted by their teachers. I certainly have. Very deficient from birth in number, acquisitiveness and secretive ness, (so styled by the phrenologists, ) in my childish days arithmetic was so profound a mystery that I could scarcely comprehend that two and two make four yet I was required to perform the same sums as those who, from their different mental conformation, delighted in figures. It being impossible to comply, I was cut and threshed with hickory or other rods, until my flesh would not only be much bruised but also raw. At last, to obviate such suffering, I yielded to the teachings of those boys who compassionated me, and commenced a game of deceit by hiring and begging the doing of my sums by those who were competent. If un fortunately they committed an error, I paid the penalty by receiving a good threshing. Thus the brute of a teacher forced me to learn. And practice fraud and deception, against which my small secretiveness andlarge conscientiousness constantly rebelled. In reading and spelling I always led my class. Yet for my natural deficiency in figures I was cruelly, almost murderously, treated, to make the idle little rascal cypher. Witnessing that others who cyphered well were always being threshed for deficiencies in reading, spelling, etc., so indelible an impression was made upon my mind of some great wrong somewhere, that on arriving at manhood I determined that no child of mine should ever enter school if such ignoramuses were teachers and such systems pursued.
