In the warm sunshine, just beyond a tall walnut tree that grew on a gentle slope in a pleasant meadow, there lay, one lovely afternoon in April, a bright red chesnut pony, called Poniatowski. He was sleek, well fed, and much regarded by his two mistresses, Mrs. Barbara and Miss Priscilla, who lived in the bright red house on one side of the pleasant meadow. Often did they look out-from the window on the right-hand, or the window on the JA-hand, or even from the upper windows, early in the morning, to see what Poniatowski was doing, and it was only that very afternoon that Mrs. Barbara had interrupted Miss. Priscilla in a cap that she'was trimming with primrose-coloured ribbons, to point out to her "the pretty careless position" in which their, favourite was lying on the grass. Mrs. Barbara had a forgiving disposition, without doubt. It was only that very morning that in the course of drawing her and Miss Priscilla home from Byeford, the town three miles distant, where they bought all their draperies and groceries, Poniatowski had taken a sudden fancy to rush into the yard of a small public-house called " The Bag and Nails." Miss Priscilla, who was driving, had been taken-so by surprise, that she had exclaimed, "Gracious me, Poniatowski! what are you doing?" And Mrs. Barbara had been so agitated as to drop out of her lap a small parcel, which the wheel instantly passed over, to the great damage of its contents. No recollection of this, however, was troubling Poniatowski's mind at present. The brothers asked him to return their manuscript when he was finished with it, but he never did. While they went on to publish their tales, their own copies of the original manuscripts for the first volume of the tales do not exist anymore. By accident or fortunate circumstance, the manuscript they sent to Brentano survived and can be read today. "The 1810 Grimm Manuscripts" is the first English language translation of the Grimms "Kinder- und Hausmärchen" as they were in the Fall of 1810. It is the first written documentation of the tales as the brothers heard and saw them. It shows the very first written documentation of the Grimms versions of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Frog King and many other tales.
